BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disorder of unknown cause, typically affecting the lungs and lymph nodes, but it can also involve the eyes, skin, heart, bones, and other organs. The exact cause is unclear, but genetic factors and environmental triggers like infections, chemicals, or dust may play a role. Although it may resolve on its own in some cases, sarcoidosis can cause long-term organ damage. There is no definitive cure, but many people manage the condition with minimal or no treatment, depending on the severity and organs affected.
METHODS: A 40-year-old healthy

Peri-implantitis represents a biologically complex, biofilm-mediated inflammatory condition characterized by progressive loss of supporting bone and soft tissue around dental implants, with a reported prevalence approaching 22%. The pathogenesis of peri-implantitis is multifactorial, involving dysregulated host immune responses, altered peri-implant tissue biology, and persistent microbial biofilm, which collectively hinder the predictability of conventional periodontal therapies. This article provides a comprehensive overview of currently available treatment modalities with an emphasis on imp

Peri-implantitis is an increasingly prevalent chronic inflammatory disease of the peri-implant tissue. A key etiologic factor for peri-implantitis is the submucosal biofilm, which may further drive clinical severity and accelerate disease progression. The present cross-sectional study aimed to characterize the compositional (full-length 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing) and functional patterns (metatranscriptomics) in the microbiome as an indicator of peri-implantitis severity. For this purpose, submucosal biofilm samples were collected from 49 peri-implantitis-diagnosed implants in 34 patien

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are offered to consumers as a healthier option than traditional tobacco. However, the long-term effect of non-heat-burning tobacco and e-cigarettes on periodontal and peri-implantitis is unknown. The present review evaluates the impact of electronic cigarettes on peri-implantitis and compares the results with traditional cigarettes and nonsmokers. Systematic/meta-analysis studies were searched in PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar until December 30, 2022. Five systematic/meta-analysis studies were identified based on the search st

Peri-implantitis (PI) is a common inflammatory disease that threatens the stability of dental implants. This study investigated whether the promoter polymorphism rs731384 of the miR-130a gene is linked to PI susceptibility and further explored the functional role of miR-130a-5p in inflammatory responses and osteoblast viability. A total of 143 patients without PI and 127 patients with PI were gathered in this study. MassARRAY was used to genotype rs731384. Saliva samples were collected to measure miR-130a-5p expression (via reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction [RT-PCR]) and inflamma

Peri-implantitis (PI) is a common disease that occurs in most dental implant patients. The progressive bone resorption related to PI markedly affects patients' life quality. Thermosensitive hydrogels composed of chitosan (CS) and β-glycerophosphate (GP) have been previously employed for the PI treatment. However, their restricted mechanical strength undermined the bone-repairing outcome. The formation of a hybrid network by adding inorganic crosslinking components may help improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels. Moreover, copper (Cu) ions have been confirmed to be beneficial for bacter

Peri-implantitis is a prevalent biological complication of implant therapy; however, whether it should be understood primarily as a biofilm-induced infection or as a consequence of prosthetically driven mechanical factors remains unclear. This narrative review synthesizes microbiological, biomechanical, and prosthetic evidence to address this question from an interdisciplinary perspective. Peri-implant biofilms occupy a distinct microbial niche, and their dysbiotic transition and the accompanying host response appear to be central to disease initiation, while an implant-directed foreign body r

Peri-implantitis is a pathogenic disease post-dental implantation, which is initiated by plaque accumulation and coupled with the dissemination of Ti or TiO2 particles. The inflammatory cascade in the proximity of the implant ultimately results in implant failure. Recent studies have revealed that mitochondrial dysfunction is closely linked to the onset and progression of peri-implantitis, especially its inflammatory reactions. In addition, the complicated nature of the environment surrounding the implant requires a more comprehensive treatment strategy. In this review, we summarize the mitoch

Peri-implantitis is a common complication among patients receiving implant-supported restorative therapy, and it often requires surgical intervention for effective treatment. Understanding the specific configuration of the peri-implant bony defect and adjacent bone peaks is crucial for tailoring treatment strategies and improving outcomes. A decision tree for reconstructive peri-implantitis therapy has been developed based on the new classification of defect configurations (Classes I to V), guiding clinicians in selecting treatment options, including biomaterials, techniques, and healing appro

Peri-implantitis is one of the most important biological complications in the field of oral implantology. Identifying the causative factors of peri-implant inflammation and osteolysis is crucial for the disease's prevention and treatment. The underlying risk factors and detailed pathogenesis of peri-implantitis remain to be elucidated. Titanium-based implants as the most widely used implant inevitably release titanium particles into the surrounding tissue. Notably, the concentration of titanium particles increases significantly at peri-implantitis sites, suggesting titanium particles as a pote

Literature has reported that up to 50% of dental implants may be affected by peri-implantitis, a bacteria-induced chronic inflammatory process, which promotes osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and inhibits bone formation, leading to progressive bone loss around implants. Current evidence points toward an increased risk for the development of peri-implantitis in both obesity/metabolic syndrome (MetS) and diabetes mellitus (DM) conditions relative to the healthy population. Currently, there is no effective treatment for peri-implantitis and the 50% prevalence in MetS and DM, along with its pre
