Effectiveness of a nutraceutical supplement containing highly standardized perilla and ginger extracts in patients with functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: In Western countries functional dyspepsia (FD) has a prevalence of 10-20% among adults and although many drugs are currently available for use within clinical practice, FD remains an important challenge for physicians. Recently, food supplements that are ginger-based, along with other botanicals, have been proposed to be a possible natural alternative to pharmaceutical drugs to empirically counteract the symptoms of FD. METHODS: We have therefore retrospectively analyzed the efficacy and safety profiles of a nutraceutical containing, in addition to a highly standardized ginger roo

Subinhibitory concentrations of perilla oil affect the expression of secreted virulence factor genes in Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenicity of staphylococcus aureus is dependent largely upon its ability to secrete a number of virulence factors, therefore, anti-virulence strategy to combat S. aureus-mediated infections is now gaining great interest. It is widely recognized that some plant essential oils could affect the production of staphylococcal exotoxins when used at subinhibitory concentrations. Perilla [Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton], a natural medicine found in eastern Asia, is primarily used as both a medicinal and culinary herb. Its essential oil (perilla oil) has been previously demonstrate

Bioactive compounds from Perilla frutescens modulate multiple cell death pathways and signaling networks in cancer therapy.

Perilla frutescens, an edible medicinal plant from East Asia, produces diverse bioactive phytochemicals with anticancer activity, including perillaldehyde (PAH), rosmarinic acid (RA), luteolin, apigenin, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). These compounds exert multi-target anticancer effects through apoptosis, autophagy, and ferroptosis. PAH triggers ferroptosis in gastric cancer via the System Xc-/GSH/GPX4 axis and P62-Keap1-Nrf2 pathway, while inducing protective autophagy in colorectal cancer through SRD5A1 and PI3K/AKT modulation. RA directly binds KRAS(G12C) and suppresses NSCLC via KRAS/AKT

Anti-Hair Loss Potential of Perilla Seed Extracts: In Vitro Molecular Insights from Supercritical Fluid Extraction.

Perilla seed has long been recognized in traditional diets for its health-promoting properties, but its potential role in hair loss prevention remains underexplored. This study compared three extraction methods-maceration (MAC), screw pressing (SC), and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE)-to determine their efficiency in recovering bioactive compounds and their effects on androgenetic alopecia (AGA)-related pathways. The SFE extract contained the highest levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids and tocopherols, while MAC uniquely recovered a broader range of polyphenols. Among all extracts, SFE-

Genome-wide association study to identification of candidate genes influencing key seed traits in Perilla frutescens.

BACKGROUND: Perilla frutescens is a widely cultivated annual crop in East Asia, valued for its oil-rich seeds and edible leaves. The seeds are abundant in functional compounds such as unsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, and flavonoids, and oil-extraction by-products are used as protein-rich animal feed and organic fertilizer. Despite its economic and nutritional significance, the genetic basis underlying major seed traits in Perilla remains poorly understood. RESULTS: To investigate the genetic architecture of key seed traits, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using 61,53

Structural remodeling toward conformational plasticity: How phloretin binding enhances the functional versatility of perilla seed protein isolate.

This study investigated the non-covalent interactions between phloretin (PHL) and perilla seed protein isolate (PSPI) using multispectral analyses and computational simulations. Intrinsic and time-resolved fluorescence confirmed that PHL bound spontaneously to PSPI via static quenching with strong affinity (Kₐ = 2.0 × 1010 L/mol at 298 K) and 1:1 stoichiometry. FTIR and CD spectra revealed secondary structure rearrangement, with random coil content increasing from 37.30% to 40.14%. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations corroborated that the PSPI binding was primarily governed by

[Mechanism of L-perilla alcohol in intervening hypoxic pulmonary hypertension based on network pharmacology and experimental verification].

The mechanism of L-perilla alcohol(L-POH) in intervening hypoxic pulmonary hypertension(HPAH) was discussed based on network pharmacology, and experimental verification. The active components and potential targets of the volatile oil of Rhodiola tangutica(VORA) in the intervention of HPAH were screened by network pharmacology. The biological process of Gene Ontology(GO) and the signaling pathway enrichment of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG) were analyzed for the core targets, and a "component-common target-disease" network was constructed. Four active components were sc

Orally delivered Perilla frutescens-derived nanovesicles regulate the gut-kidney biointerface to attenuate hyperuricemia-associated renal injury.

Hyperuricemia-associated renal injury involves coordinated disturbances in urate transport, tubular inflammation, and gut-kidney metabolic homeostasis. Here, we evaluated Perilla frutescens-derived exosome-like nanovesicles (PLENs) as an orally deliverable natural vesicle platform for this condition. PLENs showed stable nanoscale vesicular features and maintained structural compatibility under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. In potassium oxonate/hypoxanthine-induced hyperuricemic mice, oral PLENs reduced urate burden, preserved renal function, and alleviated tubular injury and early fib

Development of perilla essential oil-based nanoemulsions as anti-psoriatic and dermal delivery platforms for topical therapy.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by keratinocyte hyperproliferation, immune dysregulation, and impaired barrier regeneration, highlighting the need for safe and effective topical therapies. Perilla essential oil (PO) contains a rich profile of long-chain fatty acids and lipid-related metabolites with reported anti-inflammatory and barrier-modulating activities. However, its clinical utility is limited by its volatility and poor stability. In this study, we developed PO-based nanoemulsions (PO-NEs) to preserve bioactive components while enabling dermal delivery. G

Functional evaluation of perilla leaf tea as a pancreatic lipase inhibitor: roles of rosmarinic acid and emulsion structure.

Obesity is a growing global concern, and pancreatic lipase inhibitors have emerged as potential targets for antiobesity strategies. This study evaluates the potential of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton var. frutescens leaf tea as a pancreatic lipase inhibitor for managing dietary fat absorption. Perilla leaf tea significantly inhibited the pancreatic lipase-mediated hydrolysis of emulsified triglycerides, depending on its polyphenol and rosmarinic acid (RA) contents. However, the inhibitory effect diminished at higher concentrations, which coincided with the increased emulsion particle size. P
