INTRODUCTION: Intensive scientific research and rapid technical progress have influenced the rapid fall in term newborn mortality. At the same time new problems have arisen such as saving the lives of infants with low and very low birth weight. Solving these problems needs reorganization of perinatal care, better equipment, especially in reference units and in outpatient clinics, as well as more intensive staff training.
AIM: to obtain information whether implementation of intensified perinatal survey of fetus and newborn mortality can improve the quality of perinatal care in Poland.

INTRODUCTION: Given the prevalence and consequences of unmet social needs in perinatal populations, there is a critical demand for perinatal care that addresses social needs. To better support health systems in providing comprehensive social and perinatal care services, this quality improvement initiative uses the Donabedian model for care quality to describe the structure, process, and outcomes of embedding an innovative perinatal care program with integrated social care into an established primary care center.

BACKGROUND: Women around the globe are increasingly engaging with pregnancy and parenting apps, almost becoming a routine part of the maternity experience. However, little is known about what perinatal women and health care professionals feel about those apps in Latin American countries, where the digital transformation has been slower but where digital technologies could also bridge gaps in access to quality health care.
METHODS: This study aimed to assess views towards pregnancy and parenting apps in perinatal women and perinatal health care professionals in Chile through an online survey.

There is a growing recognition that perinatal palliative care is appropriate whenever there is uncertainty about a baby's survival outcome. Many aspects of this care can, and should, be provided by existing perinatal teams, with support from community and specialist services where required. However, delivering perinatal palliative care can be practically, ethically and emotionally challenging for professionals without adequate guidance and training. In this best practice paper, we offer practical guidance for clinicians who may be involved in antenatal counselling when a baby has been diagnose

BACKGROUND: Many of the leading causes of infant mortality are diagnosed prenatally, presenting providers with the ability to present perinatal palliative care planning as an option.
OBJECTIVE: Our study adds to the literature both by describing infant interaction with the health care system and by gaining deeper understanding of the maternal experience after being offered perinatal palliative care.
METHODS: The study was conducted at a public university-based medical center in the Midwest. Phase 1 consisted of a retrospective review of electronic medical records of 27 mother-infant pairs of

Each year, one out of five women suffers the loss of a pregnancy. Such losses are more than statistics: to many mothers, they represent the death of a longed-for child. While increasing attention has been directed toward meeting the needs of these women, the services provided are often fragmented. The use of a comprehensive checklist for providing care facilitates continuity and consistency of care and offers structure and direction for the caregiver. In this manner, vital aspects of care are not omitted as the bereaved woman moves through the health-care delivery system.

Perinatal palliative care refers to a coordinated care strategy that comprises options for obstetric and newborn care that include a focus on maximizing quality of life and comfort for newborns with a variety of conditions considered to be life-limiting in early infancy. With a dual focus on ameliorating suffering and honoring patient values, perinatal palliative care can be provided concurrently with life-prolonging treatment. The focus of this document, however, involves the provision of exclusively palliative care without intent to prolong life in the context of a life-limiting condition, o

OBJECTIVE: In California, hospitals with Community Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) increased from 17 in 1990 to 52 in 1997. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of their growth on level-specific distribution of births, acuity, and neonatal mortality.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 4,563,900 infants born from 1990 to 1997 were analyzed by levels of care. We examined shifts in birth location and acuity. Neonatal mortality for singleton very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants without congenital abnormalities was used to assess differences in level-specific survival.

OBJECTIVE: A national audit on perinatal deaths was performed to assess the quality of antenatal care, and to suggest measures for improved antenatal care.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medical records of all the perinatal deaths in Latvia in the years 1995-1996 have been studied. Non-attenders and attenders of antenatal care were characterized by socio-economic and medical variables: maternal age, parity, history of perinatal outcome, health status and behavioral hazards during the index pregnancy, length of gestation and birth weight. The Nordic-Baltic perinatal death classification was used.

A group of 106 Yoruba traditional healers who practice midwifery were interviewed, by means of a semistructured questionnaire, regarding their knowledge of various aspects of perinatal care. The study confirmed earlier reports that these herbalists are indispensable to delivery services in Nigeria. Their procedures for assisting at births were described and the healers were found to be ignorant in such important areas as normal duration of labor, causes of various obstetric complications and functions of the placenta. It was concluded that the lacunae in their knowledge could be responsible fo

OBJECTIVES: Many serious or life-threatening neurologic conditions are first diagnosed during the fetal period, often following a routine ultrasound or sonographic evaluation after an abnormal aneuploidy screen. Such conditions represent a worrisome or unexpected finding for expectant parents, making the perinatal period a critical time point to engage and empower families encountering complex neurologic clinical scenarios. This review covers the role of perinatal palliative care in these settings.

In the public mind, pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care is one of the most wonderful living experiences. However, epidemiological studies have shown that the risks of psychiatric disorders in the perinatal period are multiplying. Pregnancy entails with dramatic physical, mental and social role changing. The birth is a big, irreversible life event, and it should also be nominated as "rite of passage". This process represents a normative crisis during life, which needs new coping mechanisms to be developed. The stress and anxiety during the development of the fetus causes negative consequence

Training in perinatal care involves many different areas, and care around the time of labour forms a core part of training. Our senior residency programme involves 6 months supervised work in the labour ward. During this period, management of spontaneous, induced and augmented labour, methods of fetal monitoring and pain relief are taught. A log book and a check list are maintained to ensure the necessary manipulative and operative obstetric procedures have been followed. Limited scanning experience is provided to enable management of emergencies such as APH, multiple pregnancies, etc. Prepara

A total of 440 perinatal deaths occurring in a maternity hospital over a 6 year period have been analysed clinically and pathologically. The decline in mortality could be attributed to a reduction in asphyxial deaths, lethal malformations, and macerated stillbirths. The establishment of a neonatal intensive care unit seemed to have been more successful in combating birth asphyxia than respiratory distress syndrome. Although the greatest reduction in perinatal mortality was in babies with birthweights between 1 and 1.5 kg, there was no decline in the deaths from hyaline membrane disease or intr

In planning its response to the increasing demand for perinatal services and the increasing rate of infant mortality and low-birthweight infants the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services faces a formidable set of tasks. Initiatives already in place are attempting to deal with some of the most pressing problems. However, increased services must be made available to enable the increasing number of women to access the system of care, and further outreach is necessary to encourage more women to begin prenatal care early in pregnancy. The county needs to increase the availability of peri

Perinatal palliative care (PnPC) is a relatively new branch of pediatric palliative care (PPC), which focuses on providing holistic care in the antenatal, delivery, and neonatal settings. In this paper, we address previously unexplored justice-based ethical questions related to the provision of PnPC. We examine why some families who receive the diagnosis of a potentially life-limiting condition in their baby before or after birth receive PnPC support whilst others do not. We describe current inequities in the access to, and delivery of, PnPC. Drawing on philosophical theory (the Capabilities A

The maternal/newborn dyad presents special challenges to infection management. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, lack of information regarding SARS-CoV-2 transmission and virulence made it difficult to develop appropriate care guidance when pregnant persons had COVID-19 at the time of presentation for childbirth. We will review the considerations for the parturient, newborn, and care team, and describe the evolution of perinatal COVID management guidance.
