[Overview of peritoneal dialysis].

Peritoneal dialysis is a dialysis modality used worldwide. Despite offering several advantages, its prevalence in Switzerland in end stage renal disease population is dramatically lower than hemodialysis (7.3% vs 92.7% in 2014) although its incidence has recently progressed. Technically, a catheter is inserted into the Douglas' pouch, enabling dialysate to be infused into the peritoneal cavity. The peritoneum acts as a semi-permeable membrane allowing for the removal of toxic substances and excess water. In the following article we will give an overview of peritoneal dialysis including its tec

Peritoneal dialysis in microencephaly.

J.T. was able to remain home in her familiar environment and receive safe and adequate treatment for her renal disease. J.T. had no infectious episodes or hospitalizations while under this unit's care for 35 months. She was also able to participate in her regular activities of daily living, interact with her family members, and travel on occasion, thus maintaining a good quality of life. Therefore, unit goals for her care were met. J.T.'s experience demonstrates that with proper teaching, preparation, and support from the dialysis care team working with a dedicated family, peritoneal dialysis

Accidental hypothermia: peritoneal dialysis.

Accidental hypothermia may develop within a few minutes by immersion in cold water, in a matter of hours by exposure to cold weather, and in a matter of days in debilitatted victims by continuous exposure to milder cold stress. The prognosis in accidental hypothermia depends on the patient's premorbid condition, the depth and duration of the hypothermia and the degree of exhaustion and metabolic acidosis that result from physiologic attempts to compensate for the heat loss. For deep hypothermia (deep body temperature below 20 C [82.4F]), internal rewarming is strongly recommended as a means of

Sodium removal in peritoneal dialysis: the role of icodextrin and peritoneal dialysis modalities.

One of the main goals of dialysis is the control of extracellular volume, because inadequate sodium and fluid removal result in fluid overload and increased mortality. In the present study, we evaluated the roles of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD), and the use of icodextrin on sodium removal in 29 patients (n = 18 on CAPD, n = 11 on CCPD). Daily removal of sodium by each modality and dialysis adequacy by Kt/V and creatinine clearance were evaluated. A significantly higher amount of sodium was removed in CAPD patients than in CCPD

Empyema associated with peritoneal dialysis peritonitis.

A 65-year-old woman on peritoneal dialysis (PD) was admitted due to abdominal pain with cloudy PD effluent. The white blood cell count in PD effluent was 5860/µL with 85% polymorphonuclear neutrophils. Therefore, she was clinically diagnosed with peritonitis. The cultures of PD effluent were negative. Initial abdominal computed tomography did not find suggest any intraabdominal pathology. The patient was treated with empirical intraperitoneal antibiotics. Because abdominal pain with cloudy PD effluent persisted, the PD catheter was removed eventually. The culture of the removed PD catheter gre

Teaching peritoneal dialysis: A position paper for the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis.

Given the central importance of the peritoneal dialysis (PD) nurse in successfully training and supporting a patient with PD at home, as well as preventing complications as a result of the therapy, the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) has provided guidance on the principles for training in two previous publications. Despite the lack of high certainty evidence in teaching PD, this ISPD 2025 Position Paper builds upon the two prior works to provide contemporary approaches to training a patient/care partner for PD to be performed at home, based upon an evolution in healthcare

Case Report: Recurring Peritonitis and Dialysis Failure in a Toddler on Peritoneal Dialysis.

We report a case of a 2-year-old-boy with end stage renal disease (ESRD) secondary to posterior urethral valves (PUV) on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Our patient developed multiple episodes of peritonitis, refractory anemia and feeding intolerance over a 12-month-period. He was treated with multiple courses of intraperitoneal antibiotics. Despite being on high-calorie formula, he was slowly thriving. The feeding intolerance was attributed to past history of prematurity, gastro-esophageal reflux disease and ESRD co-morbidities. He had anemia resistant to erythrocyte stimulating agents and iron sup

Automated peritoneal dialysis versus continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for people with kidney failure.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a home-based kidney replacement therapy (KRT) performed in people with kidney failure. PD can be performed by manual filling and draining of the abdominal cavity, i.e. continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD), or using a device connected to the PD catheter that is programmed to perform PD exchanges, i.e. automated PD (APD). APD is considered to have several advantages over CAPD, such as a lower incidence of peritonitis, fewer mechanical complications, and greater psychosocial acceptability. Acknowledging the increasing uptake of APD in incident and prevalent pati

A New Method to Increase Ultrafiltration in Peritoneal Dialysis: Steady Concentration Peritoneal Dialysis.

UNLABELLED: ♦ BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) has limited power for liquid extraction (ultrafiltration), so fluid overload remains a major cause of treatment failure. ♦ METHODS: We present steady concentration peritonal dialysis (SCPD), which increases ultrafiltration of PD exchanges by maintaining a constant peritoneal glucose concentration. This is achieved by infusing 50% glucose solution at a constant rate (typically 40 mL/h) during the 4-hour dwell of a 2-L 1.36% glucose exchange. We treated 21 fluid overload episodes on 6 PD patients with high or average-high peritoneal transport

Serum irisin levels correlated to peritoneal dialysis adequacy in nondiabetic peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Irisin is a recently discovered myokine thought to be involved in multiple metabolism abnormalities in most dialysis patients. However, the myokine has not been thoroughly studied in peritoneal dialysis. This study aimed to evaluate serum irisin levels and establish their relation to dialysis adequacy, insulin resistance, and bone metabolism status in patients on peritoneal dialysis. METHODS: A total of 59 nondiabetic prevalent peritoneal dialysis patients and 52 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Serum irisin concentration was asses

Peritoneal dialysis versus haemodialysis for people commencing dialysis.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) and haemodialysis (HD) are two possible modalities for people with kidney failure commencing dialysis. Only a few randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have evaluated PD versus HD. The benefits and harms of the two modalities remain uncertain. This review includes both RCTs and non-randomised studies of interventions (NRSIs). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of PD, compared to HD, in people with kidney failure initiating dialysis. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Kidney and Transplant Register of Studies from 2000 to June 2024 using se
