The 1918-1920 influenza pandemic devastated Alaska's Indigenous populations. We report on quantitative analyses of pandemic deaths due to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) using information from Alaska death certificates dating between 1915 and 1921 (n = 7147). Goals include a reassessment of pandemic death numbers, analysis of P&I deaths beyond 1919, estimates of excess mortality patterns overall and by age using intercensal population estimates based on Alaska's demographic history, and comparisons between Alaska Native (AN) and non-AN residents. Results indicate that ANs experienced 83% of all

Extinct woolly rhinoceroses were iconic representatives of the Late Pleistocene mammoth fauna of Eurasia. These animals were characterized by two huge keratinous horns. In adults, the length of the nasal horn often exceeded one meter. The nasal horn of Coelodonta was characterized by an unusual feature for rhinoceroses-the width of its base was considerably narrower than the width of the rugosity area on the nasal bones of the skull. In this study, a new discovery of woolly rhinoceros' nasal horn in the permafrost of Yakutia is described. This specimen shows that the shape of the base of the w

Genomes reveal vast functional potential, but harbor genomic noise that obscures prediction of metabolic and environmental preferences. Genomic databases are skewed towards clinically relevant and easily cultivated bacteria, limiting predictions for diverse and underrepresented environmental taxa. Psychrotrophic bacteria, which can survive and grow in cold, nutrient-limited, dry, and saline environments, are especially underrepresented despite their relevance for understanding microbial responses to changing cold environments and potential biotechnological value given growth at low temperature

Accelerating permafrost thaw may release vast deep (>3 meters) frozen soil carbon as carbon dioxide (CO2), but this magnitude remains uncertain because current Earth system models (ESMs) lack deep carbon processes. Using an updated ORCHIDEE-MICT model simulating Pleistocene Yedoma formation and Holocene peatland development, we project northern (>30°N) carbon responses under climate change. Compared to the original model, including these deep carbon pools improves agreement with observations and reduces net CO2 uptake by 47 to 74 petagrams of carbon from 1900 to 2100 across three future scenar

We performed whole-genome sequencing of five permafrost strains of Acinetobacter lwoffii (frozen for 15-3000 thousand years) and analyzed their resistance genes found in plasmids and chromosomes. Four strains contained multiple plasmids (8-12), which varied significantly in size (from 4,135 to 287,630 bp) and genetic structure; the fifth strain contained only two plasmids. All large plasmids and some medium-size and small plasmids contained genes encoding resistance to various heavy metals, including mercury, cobalt, zinc, cadmium, copper, chromium, and arsenic compounds. Most resistance genes

Recent studies revealed a simultaneous increase in Arctic-boreal wildfires and permafrost thaw since 2000. Despite the agreement that wildfires accelerate permafrost thaw, it remains unclear whether permafrost thaw makes the landscapes more prone to wildfires. Our study developed a model-based approach to disentangle wildfires ignited naturally and anthropogenically. The historical simulation demonstrates an abrupt increase in the proportion of burned area by naturally-ignited wildfires that occurred around 2010 in the Arctic-boreal regions. The increase in burned area proportion results from

Understanding how soil nitrogen (N) responds to climate warming is critical for predicting permafrost carbon-climate feedbacks, yet long-term N responses and their underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here we show that divergent topsoil N responses to warming are associated with warming-induced shifts in soil moisture. Twelve-years of high-level warming increases topsoil N stocks in mesic alpine meadows but triggers substantial topsoil N losses in waterlogged swamp meadows. Enhanced topsoil N retention in the alpine meadow coincides with warming-driven soil drying, reduced gross protein depol

AIMS: Permafrost thawing due to global warming threatens to release long-preserved microbial communities, including potentially novel bacterial lineages. Despite the importance of West Siberian permafrost for climate models, genome-resolved studies of its microbial diversity remain limited. This study aimed to recover and characterize metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from permafrost and contemporary soils of northern West Siberia, and to assess their biosynthetic and antibiotic resistance potential.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We reconstructed 117 MAGs from soil samples collected from northern We

Future permafrost thaw will likely lead to substantial release of greenhouse gases due to thawing of previously unavailable organic carbon (OC). Accurate predictions of this release are limited by poor knowledge of the bioavailability of mobilized OC during thaw. Organic carbon bioavailability decreases due to adsorption to, or coprecipitation with, poorly crystalline ferric iron (Fe(III)) (oxyhydr)oxide minerals but the maximum binding extent and binding selectivity of permafrost OC to these minerals is unknown. We therefore utilized water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) from soils across a

Rapid Arctic warming is accelerating permafrost thaw and mobilizing previously frozen organic carbon (OC) into waterways. Upon thaw, permafrost-derived OC can become susceptible to microbial degradation that may lead to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), thus accelerating climate change. Abrupt permafrost thaw (e.g., riverbank erosion, retrogressive thaw slumps) occurs in areas rich in OC. Given the high OC content and the increase in frequency of abrupt thaw events, these environments may increasingly contribute to permafrost GHG emissions in the future. To better assess these emissions from abr

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the main permafrost area in China. Concrete structures constructed on permafrost are affected by the early negative-temperature environment. In particular, the negative-temperature environment seriously affects the strength growth process and the frost resistance of concrete (FRC). Therefore, this study considered the influence of the gas content, water-binder ratio (w/b), age, and other factors on the strength variation law and FRC under -3 °C curing conditions. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to analyze the pore structure of concrete before and after fr

Major pandemics involving respiratory viruses develop semi-regularly and require a large flux of novel viruses, yet their origination is equivocal. This paper explores how natural processes could give rise to this puzzling combination of characteristics. Our model is based on available data regarding the emergence of historic influenzas, early COVID-19 cases and spreading, the microbiome of permafrost, long-distance airborne transport of viruses reaching stratospheric levels, ultraviolet immunosuppression, sunlight variations, weather patterns, Arctic thawing, and global warming. Atmospheric c

The soil carbon cycle in permafrost peatlands is influenced by the dry-rewetting (DRW) cycle. The variations in the greenhouse gas (GHG) contributions under different temperature conditions caused by DRW are not yet systematically understood. This study aimed to investigate the interactive effects of DRW cycles and warming on GHG emissions from permafrost peatlands in the Daxing'an Mountains and quantify their contribution to global warming potential (GWP). Soils from the center and edge of a peatland were subjected to two temperatures (15 and 25 °C) and five moisture treatments under indoor e

Drew Point, an unlithified ice-rich permafrost coastline along the Alaskan Beaufort Sea, is among the most rapidly eroding Arctic coastlines, with an average erosion rate of 19 m/yr from 2007 to 2019. We use 16 high-resolution remote sensing datasets (satellite, airborne, and UAV imagery) to analyze erosion mechanisms (thermal abrasion and denudation) in relation to environmental forcings along a 1.5 km stretch of coastline during the 2018 and 2019 open water seasons. In a striking contrast, 2019 exhibited the highest mean erosion rate (34.5 m) within the 2007-2019 record, while 2018 had the s

Here, we describe 18 strains of bacilli isolated from permafrost. Most strains belong to non-anthracis species of the Bacillus cereus complex. Some strains exhibit atypical properties such as sensitivity to anthrax bacteriophages and lack of hemolytic activity and have unique MLST sequence types.

Both gradual and abrupt changes in lake surface area in permafrost regions are crucial for understanding the water cycles in cold regions under climate change. However, seasonal changes in lake area in permafrost regions are not available, and their occurrence conditions are still unclear. Based on remotely sensed water body products at a 30 m resolution, this study provides a detailed comparison of lake area changes across seven basins characterized by clear gradients in climatic, topographic and permafrost conditions in the Arctic and Tibetan Plateau between 1987 and 2017. The results show t

Continuous monitoring of permafrost dynamics remains challenging in remote high-mountain environments due to logistical constraints, harsh climatic conditions, and the limited availability of spatially distributed observations. In addition to direct temperature observations in boreholes, Autonomous Electrical Resistivity Tomography (A-ERT) offers significant potential for long-term monitoring by providing high temporal resolution observations of subsurface electrical properties, which are highly sensitive to freeze/thaw processes. This study presents the field validation of a low-power A-ERT s

In this study, we evaluated the pathogenic potential of the fungi Aspergillus thermomutatus and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa obtained from maritime Antarctic permafrost using in vivo experiments on immunocompromised BALB/c mice. Despite the low mortality observed, immunosuppressed animals infected with A. thermomutatus and R. mucilaginosa exhibited fluctuations in body mass and induced changes in the neuropsychiatric state of the mice. Fungi were recovered from the lungs, spleen, blood, and brain of infected mice at densities similar to but slightly lower than the inoculum up to 5 days post-inocul

Climate-warming-induced permafrost thaw exposes large amounts of carbon and nitrogen in soil at considerable depths, below the seasonally thawing active layer. The extent to which plant roots can reach and interact with these hitherto detached, deep carbon and nitrogen stores remains unknown. We aimed to quantify how permafrost thaw affects root dynamics across soil depths and plant functional types compared with above-ground abundance, and potential consequences for plant-soil interactions. A decade of experimental permafrost thaw strongly increased total root length and growth in the active

A methanogenic archaeon, strain SMA-21(T), was isolated from a permafrost-affected soil by serial dilution in liquid medium. The cells were non-motile, stained Gram-negative and grew as irregular cocci with a diameter of 1.3-2.5 µm. Optimal growth was observed at 28 °C, pH 7.8 and 0.02 M NaCl. The strain grew on H2/CO2, methanol and acetate, but not on formate, ethanol, 2-butanol, 2-propanol, monomethylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine or dimethyl sulfide. Major membrane lipids of strain SMA-21(T) were archaeol phosphatidylglycerol, archaeol phosphatidylethanolamine and the corresponding hy
