Dissociation between spontaneously emitted and apomorphine-induced stereotypy in Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii.

Stereotyped behavior is repetitive, topographically invariant motor activity that lacks an obvious function. We have previously characterized the spontaneous and persistent stereotypies that occur in deer mice housed in standard laboratory cages. Providing these animals with enriched environments markedly reduces their vulnerability to develop stereotypic behavioral repertoires, thus enabling us to generate behaviorally distinct (stereotypic and nonstereotypic) mice of the same species. As stereotypic behaviors are readily induced by systemic administration of a dopamine (DA) agonist, the pres

Early-life vocalizations and adult auditory brainstem responses in California mice (Peromyscus californicus).

Mammalian infants rely on vocalizations to elicit care from their parents. In adult females, behavioral and neural responses to infant cries may change during the onset of motherhood; however, parenthood-associated plasticity in auditory processing is not well understood, especially in fathers. We characterized pup vocalizations from postnatal day (PND) 1 to PND 21 in biparental California mice (Peromyscus californicus) and assessed auditory brainstem responses to pure tones in adult virgins and parents of both sexes to test the hypothesis that auditory processing changes with the onset of par

Blocking olfactory input alters aggression in male and female California mice (Peromyscus californicus).

Olfactory input into the brain can be disrupted by a variety of environmental factors, including exposure to pathogens or environmental contaminants. Olfactory cues are often eliminated in laboratory rats and mice through highly invasive procedures like olfactory bulbectomy, which may also disrupt accessory olfactory pathways and detection of non-volatile odors. In the present study, we tested whether inducing anosmia through intranasal infusion of zinc gluconate alters aggression in a monogamous, biparental rodent species, the California mouse (Peromyscus californicus). This less invasive met

Optimization of tissue sampling for Borrelia burgdorferi in white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus).

Peromyscus leucopus (the white-footed mouse) is a known reservoir of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. Sampling of white-footed mice allows for year-round B. burgdorferi surveillance as well as opportunities to establish the diversity of the different variants in a geographic region. This study explores the prevalence of B. burgdorferi infections in the tissues of white-footed mice, investigates the correlations between B. burgdorferi infected tissues, and determines the optimum field methods for surveillance of B. burgdorferi in P. leucopus. A total of 90 mice and 573 tissues

Transplacental transmission of tick-borne Babesia microti in its natural host Peromyscus leucopus.

BACKGROUND: Babesia microti is an emerging tick-borne pathogen and the causative agent of human babesiosis. Mathematical modeling of the reproductive rate of B. microti indicates that it cannot persist in nature by horizontal tick-host transmission alone. We hypothesized that transplacental transmission in the reservoir population contributes to B. microti persistence and emergence in North American rodent populations. METHODS: Peromyscus leucopus were collected from Connecticut and Block Island, Rhode Island and analyzed using a highly specific quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay for infection wit

Variable Infection Dynamics in Four Peromyscus Species Following Experimental Inoculation with Baylisascaris procyonis.

Wild rodents such as Peromyscus spp. are intermediate hosts for the zoonotic ascarid Baylisascaris procyonis (raccoon roundworm), and previous studies indicate Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed mouse) likely serves an important role in parasite ecology. Natural infections have been sporadically identified in a few Peromyscus spp., but no data are available on differences in susceptibility among the many other species. We compared survival and infection dynamics of B. procyonis in 4 species ( P. leucopus , Peromyscus maniculatus [deer mouse], Peromyscus californicus [California mouse], Peromysc

Cutaneous B-cell lymphoma in a Perdido Key Beach mouse (Peromyscus poliontus trissyllepsis).

The Perdido Key beach mouse (Peromyscus poliontus trissyllepsis) is an endangered mammal indigenous to the panhandle beaches of Northwest Florida. A captive 3.5-y-old female mouse was evaluated because of severe pruritus, diffuse alopecia, skin reddening, and ulcerations over the dorsum of her body. Initial skin biopsy of the affected area suggested bacterial dermatitis but was inconclusive. Despite empiric antibiotic, anthelmintic, and antihistamine treatments, she continued to decline and developed severe ulcerations over the majority of her body. Postmortem histopathologic evaluation led to

Borrelia burgdorferi has minimal impact on the Lyme disease reservoir host Peromyscus leucopus.

The epidemiology of vector-borne zoonotic diseases is determined by encounter rates between vectors and hosts. Alterations to the behavior of reservoir hosts caused by the infectious agent have the potential to dramatically alter disease transmission and human risk. We examined the effect of Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiological agent of Lyme disease, on one of its most important reservoir hosts, the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus. We mimic natural infections in mice using the vector (Black-legged ticks, Ixodes scapularis) and examine the immunological and behavioral responses of mous

Peromyscus leucopus and Microtus pennsylvanicus simultaneously infected with Borrelia burgdorferi and Babesia microti.

Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, and Babesia microti, the causative agent of human babesiosis, were isolated from 71 and 57%, respectively, of 14 specimens of Peromyscus leucopus and Microtus pennsylvanicus collected from Prudence and Patience Islands, R.I. Both pathogens were isolated from five individual rodents. The presence of these two infectious organisms in the same mammal suggests that individual larval Ixodes dammini may ingest both pathogens and subsequently transmit them in the nymphal stage.

Hypothyroidism in reproductively inhibited prairie deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdi) from laboratory populations.

Several thyroid function parameters were compared between reproductively inhibited prairie deer mice of both sexes taken from laboratory populations and corresponding reproductively capable controls. The results of these experiments indicated the following: 1) prairie deer mice females had a statistically significant daily variation in mean serum thyroxine concentration and males displayed a similar trend; 2) total serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine were significantly lower in both male and female reproductively inhibited population animals compared with reproductively capable controls; 3) s

The genome of Peromyscus leucopus, natural host for Lyme disease and other emerging infections.

The rodent Peromyscus leucopus is the natural reservoir of several tick-borne infections, including Lyme disease. To expand the knowledge base for this key species in life cycles of several pathogens, we assembled and scaffolded the P. leucopus genome. The resulting assembly was 2.45 Gb in total length, with 24 chromosome-length scaffolds harboring 97% of predicted genes. RNA sequencing following infection of P. leucopus with Borreliella burgdorferi, a Lyme disease agent, shows that, unlike blood, the skin is actively responding to the infection after several weeks. P. leucopus has a high leve

Interactions between parents and parents and pups in the monogamous California mouse (Peromyscus californicus).

The California mouse (Peromyscuscalifornicus) may be a valuable animal model to study parenting as it is one of the few monogamous and biparental rodent species. By using automated infra-red imaging and video documentation of established pairs spanning two days prior to birth of the litter until d 5 of post natal development (PND), it was possible to follow interactions between parents and between parents and pups. The paired males were attentive to their partners in the form of grooming and sniffing throughout the time period studied. Both these and other activities of the partners, such as e

Detection of Chlamydia infection in Peromyscus species rodents from sylvatic and laboratory sources.

To determine if Chlamydia muridarum, or other chlamydiae, are enzootic in rodents, we probed a serum bank of wild Peromyscus spp. mice for immunoglobulin G-antibody reactivity to ultraviolet light-inactivated C. muridarum elementary bodies (EBs) using an enzyme-linked immunoassay. Applying a cut-off for a positive reaction of OD(405) nm = 0.1 at a 1:20 dilution, we found titratable antibody reactivity in 190 of 247 specimens surveyed (77%, mean OD(405) = 0.33 ± 0.26, range = 0.11-1.81, median = 0.25). In addition, serum samples were obtained from a colony of specific pathogen-free Peromyscus s

A physiological and histological atlas of reproduction in the North American deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus).

The North American deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) exhibits extensive diversity in morphology, physiology, and life history across its broad range. These traits have propelled the deer mouse to model system status across several fields within the biological sciences. Nonetheless, we still lack basic knowledge about some important aspects of this species' biology. For example, limited information about the deer mouse's reproductive physiology remains a significant barrier to developing genetic tools for the species and for advancing our current understanding of how this species has been so

Mating system variation and gene expression in the male reproductive tract of Peromyscus mice.

Genes involved in reproduction often evolve rapidly at the sequence level due to postcopulatory sexual selection (PCSS) driven by male-male competition and male-female sexual conflict, but the impact of PCSS on gene expression has been under-explored. Further, though multiple tissues contribute to male reproductive success, most studies have focused on the testes. To explore the influence of mating system variation on reproductive tract gene expression in natural populations, we captured adult males from monogamous Peromyscus californicus and polygynandrous P. boylii and P. maniculatus. We gen

Threshold for increased liver weight is protective of other effects in Peromyscus exposed to PFNA.

Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) is a commercially relevant, long-chain (8 fully fluorinated carbon) perfluorinated carboxylic acid. PFNA has limited terrestrial ecotoxicity data and is detected in humans, animals, and the environment. This study is the fourth in a series with the objective of investigating the toxicity of a suite of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) detected on military installations in a mammal indigenous to North America. Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed mice, ∼25/sex/dose) were exposed via oral gavage to either 0, 0.03, 0.14, 1, or 3 mg PFNA/kg-d for 112 consecutive

Effects of physical impairments on fitness correlates of the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus.

Physical impairments are widely assumed to reduce the viability of individual animals, but their impacts on individuals within natural populations of vertebrates are rarely quantified. By monitoring wild populations of white-footed mice over 26 years, we assessed whether missing or deformed limbs, tail or eyes influenced the survival, body mass, movement and ectoparasite burden of their bearers. Of the 27 244 individuals monitored, 543 (2%) had visible physical impairments. Persistence times (survival) were similar between mice with and without impairments. Mice with eye and tail impairments h

Infection resistance and tolerance in Peromyscus spp., natural reservoirs of microbes that are virulent for humans.

The widely-distributed North American species Peromyscus leucopus and P. maniculatus of cricetine rodents are, between them, important natural reservoirs for several zoonotic diseases of humans: Lyme disease, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, babesiosis, erhlichiosis, hard tickborne relapsing fever, Powassan virus encephalitis, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, and plague. While these infections are frequently disabling and sometimes fatal for humans, the peromyscines display little pathology and apparently suffer few consequences, even when prevalence of persistent infection in a population is hi

Responses of glutamate cysteine ligase and glutathione to oxidants in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus).

Sensitivities of a wildlife species, deer mice, to oxidants were evaluated. A single dose (1589 mg/kg body weight by intraperitoneal injection) of carbon tetrachloride, a typical hepatotoxicant, caused changes in GCL activity and GSH content in multiple organs of deer mice. Hepatic GCL activity and GSH content were depleted substantially (P<0.01), renal GCL activity increased (P<0.05). Blood, brain and heart GCL activities increased (P<0.05), whereas GSH contents decreased significantly. Deer mice were exposed to Pb, or Pb together with Cu and Zn via drinking water for 4 weeks. GCL activities
