The aim of the study was to investigate whether client-reported expected engagement with therapy predicted therapy outcome. It was hypothesized that higher expected engagement with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or person-centred experiential therapy (PCET) would predict more symptomatic improvement following therapy and higher likelihood of therapy completion. The Sheffield Expected Engagement with Therapy Scale was administered to 96 clients at pre-therapy assessment with all meeting a diagnosis of moderate or severe depression with 53 receiving CBT and 43 receiving PCET. Chronic tinnitus is a common, sometimes highly distressing phenomenon that can be triggered and maintained by an interplay of physical and psychological factors. Partnering with clinical psychology and psychosomatic medicine, modern otolaryngology integrates both medical (e.g., hearing loss) and psychological influences (e.g., interactions between biographical experiences, personality traits, subjective evaluation of intrapsychic and interpersonal stimuli, emotional states, and intrapsychic or interpersonal emotion regulation strategies). Both groups of variables can influence the intensity an

BACKGROUND: The treatment of patients diagnosed with a narcissistic personality disorder (NPS) is considered to be extra challenging. Well-controlled studies on the effectiveness of psychotherapy in NPS patients are not available; so many interventions are based on theoretical constructs. The clarification-oriented psychotherapy (COP) is a psychotherapeutic approach, which emerged from concepts of the cognitive behavioral therapy, client-centered psychotherapy and various process-oriented procedures. The present ambulatory therapy-evaluation of COP aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a psyc

Forty percent of the mental health care in this country is provided by primary care practitioners alone, and another 20% is provided by primary care practitioners working with mental health professionals. Primary care physicians can serve a valuable role by educating their patients about various forms of psychotherapy. Finding a good "fit" between patient and therapist is crucial to a good outcome. We discuss which psychotherapeutic techniques are appropriate for various emotional problems and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

This study explored how participation in a person-centred group intervention influenced the personal recovery process of individuals with mental illness at the end of the intervention and 3 months after. Using a qualitative longitudinal design, the study was conducted in an outpatient clinic at the Psychiatric Department of the North Denmark Region. Seventeen participants completed the 12-week intervention, which included two Discovery group sessions and 10 Guided Self-Determination method sessions. Participants were interviewed post-intervention and at three-month follow-up. Data were analyse

Relational competence is a key determinant of psychotherapy outcomes, yet its development during training remains insufficiently understood. The present study adopts a qualitative, trainee-centered approach to examine how psychotherapy trainees conceptualize relational competences, evaluate their strengths and limitations, and identify the experiences most influential in their development. Forty-nine trainees from a four-year psychotherapy training program completed a structured interview, and data were analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis. Findings revealed four main themes:

OBJECTIVE: The mechanisms underlying psychotherapy's effects remain debated, with some emphasizing theory-specific therapeutic techniques and others highlighting common factors like therapeutic alliance. Evidence is inconclusive partially because it is rarely assessed which interventions are actually employed in naturalistic outpatient settings. The study thus examined (a) how patient- and therapist-reported interventions during cognitive-behavioral therapy predict outcome, (b) whether naturally occurring integration of intervention from different therapeutic orientations predicts a more or le

Thirty panic disorder patients were assigned randomly to four weekly sessions of either cognitive-behavioral therapy or nondirective, supportive therapy. Dependent variables included clinician ratings, standardized self-report questionnaires, and self-monitoring. Cognitive-behavioral therapy led to significant reductions in worry about the recurrence of panic, and in overall ratings of phobic distress. Nondirective supportive therapy did not produce significant effects. In addition, proportionately more patients who were actively panicking at preassessment and underwent cognitive-behavioral tr

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether problem-solving therapy is an effective treatment in older patients with depression and executive dysfunction, a population likely to be resistant to antidepressant drugs.
METHOD: Participants were adults age 60 and older with major depression and executive dysfunction. Problem-solving therapy was modified to be accessible to this population. Participants were randomly assigned to 12 weekly sessions of problem-solving therapy or supportive therapy and assessed at weeks 3, 6, 9, and 12.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common childbirth complication that impairs the mother-infant relationship and contributes to long-term developmental challenges among children. Although PPD treatment reduces depressive symptoms, it is not necessarily sufficient to improve maternal-infant interaction. In addition, several barriers preclude timely access to care including mental health stigma, limited specialized providers, and challenges with navigating the healthcare system and securing necessary childcare and transportation. Our team developed a 12-session patient- an

This study examined the process and outcome of group therapy for community health center clients with borderline personality disorder. The results indicated that group members rated Yalom's curative factors to be increasingly helpful over time, and that universality and existential factors were consistently ranked as very helpful group process variables. The group sessions also were associated with positive outcomes, as evidenced by significant improvement in Goal Attainment Scale scores and the depression and hostility scales of the Brief Symptom Inventory. The results of this study suggest t

Deep brain stimulation is an emerging therapy for treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. Yet, accessibility is limited, treatment protocols are heterogeneous and there is no guideline or consensus on the best practices. Here, we combine evidence from scientific investigations, expert opinions and our clinical expertise to propose several clinical recommendations from the pre-operative, surgical and post-operative phases of deep brain stimulation care for treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. A person-centered and biopsychosocial approach is adopted.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorders in adolescence are among the most challenging clinical syndromes to diagnostically identify and treat in psychotherapy. The Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual, Second Edition (PDM-2) proposes an integration between nomothetic knowledge and an idiographic understanding of adolescent patients suffering from depression to promote a person-centered approach. This single-case study was aimed at describing and discussing the clinical value of an accurate diagnostic assessment within the PDM-2 framework.
METHOD: Albert, a 16-year-old adolescent with a DSM-5 diagnosis of

The most common vehicle for self-understanding, revelation, and change in group psychotherapy is the articulation of internal experience, the practice of putting your thoughts and feelings into words-not necessarily including bodily signals or sensations. The experiential body and its regulatory principles are becoming more popular, but their prioritization is not central in group theory or practice. This article presents a somatic conceptualization of grounding as a practice. Group psychotherapy is in a unique position to serve as social ground for its members and invite somatic tracking and

OBJECTIVE: Telehealth psychotherapy (TH) has become widespread since the COVID-19 pandemic and has generally proven to be equally effective and acceptable as in-person (IP) treatment. However, it is unclear how TH and IP client characteristics and service utilization compare in routine practice post-pandemic.
METHODS: Individual psychotherapy clients (N = 22,710) receiving routine treatment at 72 university counseling centers from 2021 to 2023 reported on their demographic and clinical characteristics, while service utilization was determined through chart review.
RESULTS: Compared to IP cli

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Psychotherapy remains a fundamental component of mental health treatment, yet it encounters significant barriers to accessibility and efficacy. The integration of digital therapies, encompassing e-Health, m-Health, and artificial intelligence (AI) offers the transformative potential to enhance therapeutic processes through automated systems that improve access and personalize treatment. This integration, however, involves complex considerations, including health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the dynamics of the therapeutic alliance. This narrative review synthesize

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by persistent widespread pain, increased pain sensitivity and tenderness. Women with FM also report disability, in terms of negative consequences on activities of daily living. Our recent randomized controlled trial (RCT) is the first study of resistance exercise to show positive effects on pain disability. The resistance exercise program of our RCT emphasized active involvement of participants in planning and progression of the exercise, using the principles of person-centeredness, to support each participant's ability to manage the exercise and

BACKGROUND: It is a common view that psychodynamic treatment does not help much to ameliorate the symptoms of panic and agoraphobia. The effects of an insight-oriented treatment on central anxiety symptoms are the subject of the present controlled study.
METHODS: Forty patients with severe panic and agoraphobia were admitted to an inpatient anxiety treatment program. Most of the patients had been treated by pharmacological means unsuccessfully. The patients were randomly assigned to pure client-centered therapy or to additional behavioral exposure treatment. Client-centered and behavioral ago

The study explores the verbal interaction relationship between therapists and members, and the interaction model of this group. Six subjects were chosen by convenience sampling from the psychiatric OPD of a medical center in the Taichung area. Subjects with informed consent participated in a 12-week course of closed group psychotherapy. All data was tape-recorded and the Hill Interaction Matrix (HIM) scale was applied for simultaneous triangulation, in order to analyze the group's dynamic development of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy for patients with panic disorder. The results indicated
