Where is communication breaking down? Narrative tensions in obesity-in-pregnancy clinical encounters.

There are numerous biomedical and psychosocial challenges associated with obesity in pregnancy that impede communication between healthcare providers (HCPs) and patients. We conducted a narrative study informed by stigma theory to understand specific areas of communication breakdown in obesity-in-pregnancy clinical encounters. Sixteen patients and 19 HCPs participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews. We explored how participants positioned obesity-in-pregnancy clinical encounters within their broader narratives. Employing narrative analysis, we identified five narrative tensions contri

An Intersectional Perspective on Digital Health: Longitudinal Narratives and Observations With Older and Middle-Aged Women Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People experiencing homelessness and older people encounter barriers as health and social care services are increasingly delivered online, however, there is limited knowledge about how this relates to older and middle-aged women experiencing homelessness, especially those from minoritized and/or migrant communities. We aimed to explore how technology, including digital health, can help or hinder older and middle-aged women to navigate paths through and out of homelessness. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This 16-month qualitative longitudinal study utilized narrative i

The Internet as a source of data to support the development of a quality-of-life measure for eating disorders.

Despite the attractiveness of the Internet as a data source on individuals' experiences with health conditions, few have studied its use in quality-of-life instrument development. In this article, the authors describe the use of Internet-based unsolicited first-person narratives to supplement qualitative material derived from other sources (published articles and interviews) in the early stages of development of a quality-of-life instrument for eating disorders. In a systematic Internet search, they identified 31 posted first-person narratives. Sixteen (52%) authors had anorexia nervosa, 11 (3

Adolescent development in family-based treatment for anorexia nervosa: Patients' and parents' narratives.

Maudsley Family-Based Treatment (FBT) is currently the best supported treatment for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN); however, little is known about whether it achieves its stated aim in the final phases of promoting the patient's return to an expected developmental trajectory. This study aimed to explore the perspectives of young people and their parents regarding the developmental impact of AN, and the role of FBT in addressing developmental challenges. Young people ( N = 12) who ceased FBT a minimum 1 year prior, and their parents ( N = 12), completed face-to-face semi-structured inte

Personal narratives to support learning about lung transplant for people with cystic fibrosis.

OBJECTIVES: Cystic fibrosis (CF) causes progressive respiratory disease and premature death. Lung transplantation (LTx) is an important treatment consideration for people with CF (PwCF). Among PwCF, does preparedness for LTx and knowledge about LTx improve by reading personal narratives from CF LTx recipients ("CF Stories")? METHODS: Adults with CF were recruited and presented with online CF Stories. Pre- and post-intervention questionnaires assessed LTx preparedness, knowledge, and decisional conflict. Deductive thematic analysis of study visits was conducted. RESULTS: Twenty-five participa

Remembering without a past: individuals with anterograde memory impairment talk about their lives.

This paper describes the linguistic resources people with anterograde amnesia draw on in conversational narratives. Because of their problems in recollecting post-morbid memories, it is particularly challenging for such individuals to refer to personal experiences. Seven patients with anterograde memory impairments due to neurotrauma were interviewed one year post-event. Among other topics, they were asked to talk about their new lives and selves, which was expected to be a precarious affair given that they did not have many or any autobiographical memories. Microanalyses of their narratives i

Absence or presence? Complexities in the donor narratives of single mothers using sperm donation.

STUDY QUESTION: How do single mothers who have conceived a child via anonymous or identity-release sperm donation represent the donor? SUMMARY ANSWER: While the majority of mothers described their anonymous and identity-release donors as symbolically significant to their families, others were more likely to emphasize that their lack of information limited their thoughts about him. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: There is limited understanding of the factors that impact upon how single mothers represent the donor, and whether or not they are determined by specific donor programmes (anonymous or identi

Social comparison processes, narrative mapping and their shaping of the cancer experience: a case study of an elite athlete.

Drawing on data generated by life history interviews and fieldwork observations we illuminate the ways in which a young elite athlete named David (a pseudonym) gave meaning to his experiences of cancer that eventually led to his death. Central to this process were the ways in which David utilized both social comparisons and a narrative map provided by the published autobiography of Lance Armstrong (2000). Our analysis reveals the selective manner in which social comparison processes operated around the following key dimensions: mental attitude to treatment; the sporting body; the ageing body;

Schizophrenia, narrative and change: Andalusian care homes as novel sociocultural context.

This study explores qualitative changes in the life narratives of persons diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia who were receiving recovery treatment in special care homes in Andalusia, Spain. These narratives are related to patients' construction of social identity and the recovery process. Initially, 10 narrative interviews were performed. The first five patients (Group 1) had lived at the homes for only 3 months, while the other five (Group 2) had been there for 61.4 months. Two years after the initial interviews, three patients from Group 1 were interviewed once more. The qualitative analy

Understanding the value of art prompts in an online narrative medicine workshop: an exploratory-descriptive focus group study.

Narrative medicine is an interdisciplinary field that complements and expands on conventional healthcare training by supporting narrative competence skills and creativity derived from the arts and humanities domains to address the needs of healthcare providers and receivers. With the COVID-19 pandemic having had a profound impact on the healthcare workforce with an already high burn-out rate, multimodal arts interventions may help address the holistic dimensions of well-being. While empirical evidence supports the use of arts-based interventions in promoting healthcare workers' well-being and

Borderline personality disorder in adolescence: The role of narrative identity in the intrapsychic reasoning system.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) manifests in adolescents, serving as a forerunner for later dysfunctionality and life constraints. BPD is characterized by multiple difficulties in understanding the self and others, and it has been implied that intrapsychic processes of reasoning might be the primary driver of these disturbances. In this study, we examined the role of narrative identity, the dynamic and evolving story people construct about their personal pasts, presents, and futures, as a potentially important but largely overlooked aspect of temporal reasoning within the intrapsychic sy

Understanding narrative effects in physical activity promotion: the influence of breast cancer survivor testimony on exercise beliefs, self-efficacy, and intention in breast cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Research in health communication has shown that narratives contribute more positively to changing health behaviors than informational messages. The main purposes of this study were to examine and to compare the effects of two messages promoting physical activity, one narrative and the other informational, on the perceptions and behavioral intentions of cancer patients. METHODS: A total of 158 women with breast cancer, undergoing chemotherapy and sedentary, were assigned to read the testimony of a breast cancer survivor who had been physically active during and after treatment (TE gro

The Use of Narrative in Science and Health Communication: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Many people deny science and reject health recommendations despite widely distributed facts and statistics. Didactic science and health communication is often dry, and relies on the false assumption that people make purely evidence-based decisions. Stories can be a powerful teaching tool by capturing attention and evoking emotion. OBJECTIVE: We explore the impact and appeal of, and describe best practices for, using narrative (storytelling) versus didactic methods in science and health communication. PATIENT INVOLVEMENT: No patients were involved in the review process. METHODS:

"I Am Not A Victim. I Am A Survivor": Resilience as a Journey for Female Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse.

This study was designed to expand our understanding of the positive aspects of coping and resilience in female survivors of child sexual abuse. Research questions focused on women's lived experiences of being survivors of child sexual abuse and how they have experienced resilience, developed healthy intimate relationships, and viewed themselves as sexual beings. Using a qualitative research lens of phenomenology, we captured the essence of survivors' experiences of resilience. Although each woman's experience was unique, similar patterns of processes and outcomes emerged as meaningful in their

Developing CIRCA-BC and exploring the role of the computer as a third participant in conversation.

The Computer Interactive Reminiscence Conversation Aid (CIRCA) is a software program using touch screen technology and digital materials from public archives to support conversation between people with dementia and their carers. In this 2-phase study, we first worked with seniors' focus groups to identify and select relevant content for a regional adaptation of CIRCA (British Columbia version of CIRCA [CIRCA-BC]). We then pilot tested CIRCA-BC with 3 participants having dementia and a conversation partner, analyzing their interactions to explore how they drew on program content and format to s

Detecting Features of Interpersonal Difficulties in First-Person Accounts of Schizophrenia; Automated Linguistic and Network Analyses.

BACKGROUND: First-person accounts (FPAs) provide multi-faceted insights into the lived social experiences of schizophrenia. We examined FPAs and third-person accounts (TPAs) using automated linguistic and network analyses to extract narrative patterns in relation to interpersonal difficulties. STUDY DESIGN: Narratives from 279 articles published in Schizophrenia Bulletin (1979-2025) were screened to identify 133 FPAs and 44 TPAs. Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire was used to assess syndromes of schizotypy expressed in the narratives. At least one cognitive-perceptual syndrome (ideas of re
