Research has focused on pain perception of individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder, but there is a lack of research regarding pain perception for other types of Personality Disorders. The present study explored associations between the perception of experimentally-induced acute pain of individuals without acute or chronic pain with Borderline, as well as Histrionic, and Schizotypal, Personality Disorders traits. The primary question of interest was whether any personality disorders were associated with altered pain perception. Fifty-two participants had pain induced by a cold-pressor

Personality disorders are among the most common mental disorders in older age and are associated with a range of negative outcomes in physical and emotional health as well as in interpersonal functioning. Several screening tools have been validated with older patients and can aid in diagnosis. The presence of a personality disorder is associated with increased risk of cognitive decline, and cognitive disorders may mimic personality disorders. As a result, an evaluation of cognitive function is an essential part of assessing for a personality disorder. Emerging evidence points to the promise of

BACKGROUND: The Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders as well as the upcoming IDC-11 have established a new focus on diagnosing personality disorders (PD): personality functioning. An impairment of self and interpersonal functioning in these models represents a general diagnostic criterion for a personality disorder. Little is known so far about the impairment of personality functioning in patients with other mental disorders than PD. This study aims to assess personality functioning in patients with anxiety disorders.
METHODS: Ninety-seven patients with the diagnosis of generaliz

Abstract This paper presents a systematic review of clinical trials of drugs for patients with personality disorders. Almost all trials have concerned the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Research yields some evidence for symptomatic improvement with antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics. However, drug treatment does not produce remission of BPD. Routine prescription of these agents for these patients is not evidence-based.

Since some years it has become evident that objective disturbances can be found in patients suffering from personality disorders. Research findings from earlier date already demonstrated low levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in the cerebrospinal fluid, especially in patients with personality disorders, under exclusion of depressive features. Furthermore, data have been collected on the correlation between a hyposerotonergic state and disturbances in aggression and impulse control in a variety of syndromes such as automutilation, bulimia nervosa, suicide attempts and various states of drug a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review explores the high co-occurrence between personality disorders (PDs) and anxiety disorders (ADs), focusing on clinical implications, the frequency of their association, and the challenges these comorbidities pose for diagnosis and treatment. In addition, this review highlights recent research findings and the need for better therapeutic strategies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Contemporary studies have confirmed a strong association between PDs and ADs, particularly borderline personality disorder (BPD), which shows an 85% comorbidity with anxiety disorders. Gender differenc

OBJECTIVE: Previous research on the prevalence of personality disorders in patients with eating disorders varies greatly in findings, but a general understanding seem to exist that personality disorders are rather common among eating-disordered patients. The present investigation is aimed at establishing the prevalence of DSM III-R or DSM IV personality disorders in a large population seeking treatment for eating disorders.
METHOD: Five hundred and forty-five patients with DSM IV- eating disorders have been evaluated using the structured clinical interview for DSM III-R or IV-Axis II and the

OBJECTIVE: Personality disorders are common in symptomatic eating disorders subjects. Because personality symptoms could be exaggerated by malnutrition or Axis I disorders, we studied women who had recovered from eating disorders for at least 1 year to see if personality disorder symptoms persisted in the well state.
METHOD: Personality disorders were evaluated in 10 women recovered from anorexia nervosa (AN), 28 women recovered from bulimia nervosa (BN), and 16 women recovered from AN and BN, using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R personality disorders.
RESULTS: Fourteen of 5

AIM: Interpersonal sensitivity and mistrust are the main characteristics of cluster A personality disorders (CAPD) which might be due to the high accessibility to negative suggestions from environments. Yet the exact associations between hypnotic suggestibility and their personality disorder functioning styles remain unclear.
METHODS: We invited 36 patients with CAPD and 115 healthy volunteers to undergo the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale: Form C (SHSS:C) and Parker Personality Measure (PERM).
RESULTS: Compared to controls; patients scored higher on PERM paranoid; schizoid; schizotyp

Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) first appeared in the American Psychiatric Association diagnostic nosology in 1980, although its roots stretch back more than 100 years under labels such as borderline, ambulatory, and latent schizophrenia. SPD is unique in that it is conceptualized both as stable personality pathology and also as a milder manifestation of schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology. The categorical operationalization of SPD has remained largely unchanged for the last 40 years, with emphasis on interpersonal deficits, cognitive and perceptual distortions, and odd and eccentric

Alexithymia is a multifaceted construct encompassing difficulties identifying and describing feelings, limited imaginal capacity, and externally oriented thinking. Despite the high prevalence among borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients, less is known about symptom-level associations between alexithymia and BPD criteria. Prior studies highlight an elevated risk of self-injurious and suicidal behaviours associated with alexithymia. Understanding the symptom-level relationships with alexithymia may provide a more specific target for intervention. This study explored the associations betw

The three longitudinal projects described in this special section of the Journal of Personality Disorders raise a number of intriguing questions concerning the natural history of personality disorders and offer more than their share of surprises. In addition, they underscore several valuable lessons derived from the literature on normal-range personality traits. Drawing in part from the writings of the American trait psychologist Gordon Allport, I describe four such lessons: (1) change and continuity of personality traits and disorders can and do coexist, (2) the covariation among personality

With increasing recognition of social phobia as a common and often debilitating disorder, interest is developing in its boundaries with other disorders such as avoidant personality disorder and temperamental constructs such as shyness. Such interest reflects the more general debate concerning Axis I disorders, personality disorders, and what is considered normal personality variance. This review summarizes the available literature comparing avoidant personality disorder (APD), generalized social phobia (GSP), and shyness. In studies comparing APD and GSP, comorbidity rates have varied from app

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about personality and personality disorders in the elderly. This paper summarizes the literature in these fields.
METHODS: Articles were selected using a Medline and Google Scholar search. The keywords were personality, personality disorder, aging and elderly.
RESULTS: Personality is not fixed and can change across the life-time including in the elderly. Personality disorders are frequent with a prevalence estimated between 10 and 20%. These rates are essentially equivalent to that of younger groups. Clinical presentation of these disorders may change over time. Lo

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To systematically review the recent studies which examined the co-occurrence and relationships between anxiety disorders and personality disorders.
RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence rates of personality disorders in patients with anxiety disorders are high, with 35% in posttraumatic stress disorder, 47% in panic disorder with agoraphobia and generalized anxiety disorder, 48% in social phobia, and 52% in obsessive-compulsive disorder. There is a high rate (39%) of the DSM cluster C personality disorders among individuals with anxiety disorders. Moreover, anxiety disorders are

We assessed the prevalence of personality disorders (PD) using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders (SCID-II) in 36 patients with restricting anorexia nervosa, 30 patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and 42 patients with bulimia nervosa. Of the 108 patients, 51% met the criteria for at least one PD. The patients with PD had more severe clinical features in terms of bulimic behaviors, concurrent depressive, anxious, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and psychopathology related to eating disorders compared to the patients without any PD. INTRODUCTION: Distinguishing those with a personality disorder from those with major depressive disorder (MDD) can be challenging, but establishing the correct diagnosis can direct appropriate management.
AIM: To identify whether behavioural themes differ between those with personality disorders from those with MDD, and how those differences might relate to a clinical team's perception of diagnosis.
METHOD: An observational study identifying all inpatients presenting with symptoms of depression. At discharge, patients (n = 60) underwent a structured diagnostic interview and were grouped acco
