Risk factors for poor bereavement outcomes and the support needs of adult bereaved refugees within the psychosocial-cultural concept of personhood: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The majority of refugees are exposed to trauma and multiple deaths and often face difficulties in coping with the death of someone close to them. This review aimed to systematically synthesize evidence regarding the risk factors associated with poor bereavement outcomes and the support needs of refugees during bereavement, using the ring theory of personhood as a guiding framework to inform service provision and policy development. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using five citation databases (PsycINFO, CINAHL, SocINDEX, MEDLINE, and Web of Science), along with gray lit

The Theory of Communal-Relational Person-Becoming: A Nursing Theory From the African Philosophical Perspective.

Nursing theory has long treated "person" and "human being" as interchangeable, reflecting philosophical traditions that prioritize autonomy and individualism. Thinkers such as John Locke distinguish the biological human organism from the person, defining personhood through inward-looking psychological capacities. This cognitive, individualistic model has shaped conventional nursing theories that frame the person as a self-contained unit. In contrast, African relational ontologies conceptualize personhood as a moral, communal, and developmental achievement. Traditions such as Ubuntu, Ukama, and

Patients' Experiences of Care During Hospitalization for Acute Respiratory Failure During COVID-19: A Multi-Center Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: An improved understanding of patients' lived experiences can identify opportunities to advance patient-centered care, particularly during times of limited healthcare resources. OBJECTIVES: To better understand the patient experiences of hospitalization and inform the development of hospital-level strategies to improve inpatient patient-centered care. METHODS: In this multicenter national qualitative study, we conducted semi-structured interviews of patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Using thematic analysis, we organized our findings around the Levels of Personhood conceptual mo

Increasing Care Partners' Capacity for Supporting Individuals Living with Dementia Through Bravo Zulu: Achieving Excellence in Relationship-Centered Dementia Care.

The need for person- and relationship-centered care (PCC/RCC) in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias is well established. Recognizing the limitations of PCC in fully honoring the intricate interdependencies between care partners and persons living with dementia, a new training program called Bravo Zulu was developed. This comprehensive, 12-hour dementia training program aims to enhance personhood beliefs and self-efficacy among care partners, improving the experience of care and support for both people living with dementia and their care partners. Responses from 182 participants who comple

In defense of in vitro fertilization: time to get involved in state-level advocacy!

We share experiences in advocating to defend in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Virginia, Missouri, and Mississippi; provide historical context on the "Personhood" anti-IVF movement; and discuss why "embryo donation" is a more accurate term than "embryo adoption." Some individuals and communities have a deeply held belief that a fertilized oocyte is a very early human life, and we will likely never change their minds. In the fertility community, most providers consider embryos to be an important part of the continuum between gametes (sperm and eggs) to live birth. Embryos are neither life nor pro

Abortion is incommensurable with fetal alcohol syndrome.

A recent article argued for the immorality of abortion regardless of personhood status by comparing the impairment caused by fetal alcohol syndrome to the impairment caused by abortion. I argue that two of the premises in this argument fail and that, as such, one cannot reasonably attribute moral harms to abortion on the basis of the moral harms caused by fetal alcohol syndrome. The impairment argument relies on an inconsistent instantiation, which undermines the claim that personhood is irrelevant, and it does not fulfill its own ceteris paribus clause, which demands that no additional benefi

Persons and death: what's metaphysically wrong with our current statutory definition of death?

This paper challenges the recommendations of 1981 President's Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research that all jurisdictions in the United States should adopt the Uniform Determination of Death Act, which endorses a whole-brain, rather than a higher-brain, definition of death. I argue that the Commission was wrong to reject the "personhood argument" for the higher-brain definition on the grounds that there is no consensus among philosophers or the general population as to what constitutes "personhood". I claim that philosophers agree that

Killing and Impairing Fetuses.

Could it be that if a fetus is not a person abortion is still immoral? One affirmative answer comes in the form of 'The Impairment Argument', which utilizes 'The Impairment Principle' to argue that abortion is immoral even if fetuses lack personhood. I argue 'The Impairment Argument' fails. It is not adequately defended from objections, and abortion is, in fact, a counterexample to the impairment principle. Furthermore, it explains neither what the wrong-making features of abortion are nor what features of fetuses ground their supposed moral significance. By presupposing the fetus lacks person

Cancer Cachexia and its Impact on Patient Dignity: What Nurses Need to Know.

Noted physician, Sr. William Osler, is credited with saying, "Care more particularly for the individual patient than for the special features of the disease". Osler understood that each patient for whom we care is first and foremost a person, who also happens to be living with a particular illness. In addition to understanding the nature of the patient's illness, therefore, it is also critically important that we come to understand the patient's unique story and set of circumstances. Doing so allows us to engage with patients in a way that affirms their sense of dignity and personhood. Drawing

[Singer--and no end in sight? Or: can severely handicapped patients be "persons"?].

Children with profound disablement (hence, in conclusion, all individuals with profound mental retardation) are denied to possess personhood by the bioethicist Peter Singer, on the ground that they lack the capability of reason, of consciousness of self, and of self-determination. The article seeks to point out that Singer's concept of the person is too narrow: the very disposition for development of these abilities in itself is a constituent of personhood. Human social and spiritual interwovenness is considered another essential constituent. Finally, the fundamental difference between "life w

Embryonic discourse: abortion, stem cells and cloning.

This Article interprets the debate about abortion and the debate about embryonic research and therapeutic cloning as aspects of a larger history of ideas. The Article suggests that embryos increasingly stand for different truths in discourse about abortion on the one-hand and about embryonic stem cell research and therapeutic cloning on the other. More specifically, the Article suggests that the contemporary debate about the meaning of the embryo in the context both of abortion and of embryonic research bespeaks a widespread transformation in Western, and especially American, society during th

Defining the threshold of birth: ethical introduction of artificial placenta and artificial womb technology in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Artificial amnion and placenta technology (AAPT), also colloquially referred to as artificial womb technology, will likely move into first-in-human trials in the next few years. The results of the AAPT animal trials inspired numerous commentaries in the ethics literature, with some ethicists and philosophers advocating for the creation of a new "status of being" to describe a patient supported by AAPT. Proposed states of being include terms such as: "gestateling" (a fetus outside the womb) or "fetonate" (a neonate with full human rights but retained fetal physiology). Adopting the "gestateling

Research Advance Directives: Ethical Implications for Persons with Alzheimer's Disease, and for the Families of Elderly Dementia Patients.

As both human longevity and diagnostic ability improve, more individuals are being diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia disease (Alzheimer's). Yet there is a paucity of new Alzheimer's research trials. One obstacle to research is the large number of Alzheimer's patients deemed incapable of providing informed consent for clinical research. Research advance directives (RADs) offer patients the opportunity to provide informed consent before incapacity occurs. However, critics question whether RADs guarantee informed consent, claiming that due to the nature of the disease, the consenting agent is n

Ethical and legal dilemmas around termination of pregnancy for severe fetal anomalies: A review of two African neonates presenting with ventriculomegaly and holoprosencephaly.

Termination of pregnancy (TOP) or feticide for severe fetal anomalies is ethically and morally challenging and maybe considered illegal in countries with restrictive abortion laws. While diagnostic modalities such as fetal ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and genetic screening have improved prenatal diagnosis, these technologies remain scarce in many African countries making diagnosis and counseling regarding TOP difficult. Ethical dilemmas such as women's autonomy rights may conflict with fetus' right to personhood, and doctor's moral obligations to society. In liberal jurisdictions, p

Hidden places, uncommon persons.

Specialized hospital units recently created to house and maintain ventilator or other technology-dependent persons in the United States are new cultural forms that enable beings who are neither fully alive, biologically dead, nor "naturally" self-regulating, yet who are sustained by modern medical practices, to exist. These institutions both fabricate and complicate the persons who are patients there through surveillance and maintenance of their conditions. This article concerns the relationship of person to place when the consciousness of an individual, considered to be the essence of personh

The cultural construction of preterm birth in the United States.

This commentary explores four features of the cultural construction of pregnancy and childbirth in the United States: risk categorization as an aspect of reproductive governance, medicalization, intensive mothering with its implications for gender stratification, and the definition of personhood as beginning at conception. The cultural construction of preterm births (those that end before gestation is complete at about 37 weeks) is interwoven with beliefs about risk in pregnancy. Health risk categories overlap with socially stigmatized characteristics and behaviors, opening sub-groups of women

Mental health and professional identity formation amongst medical students in Singapore: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Professional identity formation (PIF) is nurtured in medical school through the inculcation of the values, expectations and responsibilities of the profession-shaping belief systems that inform the professional identity and broader concepts of personhood. This developmental journey, however, places strain on mental health, with medical students facing higher rates of anxiety, depression and mental stress compared to non-medical peers. These experiences can impede effective PIF. Yet, studies that examine the intersection between PIF and mental health remain remiss, further compounde

Miscarriage Is Not a Cause of Death: A Response to Berg's "Abortion and Miscarriage".

Some opponents of abortion claim fetuses are persons from the moment of conception. Call these "Personhood-At-Conception" (or PAC), opponents of abortion. Amy Berg (2017, Philosophical Studies 174:1217-26) argues that if fetuses are persons from the moment of conception, then miscarriage kills far more people than abortion. Thus, PAC opponents of abortion must "immediately" and "substantially" shift their attention, resources, etc., toward preventing miscarriage or admit they do not believe that personhood begins at conception (or, at least, they should recognize they are not acting in ways co
