[Effectiveness of dental prevention programme for Swiss youth].

In the past few years, the caries research has reached a level for an effective prevention, that in Switzerland has been practiced already for 25-30 years. The results are conclusive and today I will show that the caries rate has been dramatically deduced. An adequate and regular fluoride delivery is the basis for an effective caries prevention. Also other important measures are optimal oral hygiene and a proper nutritional diet. In Switzerland, we are coming close to the two goals for the 5 year olds and for the 12 year olds set by WHO for the year 2000 for healthy teeth. In many Swiss commun

Knowledge Gaps in Pain Management Between Nurses and Nursing Assistants in a Tertiary Hospital in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a universal human experience and a persistent challenge for health services. Its assessment and management require evidence-based competencies to ensure safe, person-centered care. In most health systems, patients with pain are cared for by both nursing professionals and nursing assistants depending on staff allocation, with assistants performing some delegated interventions. Previous studies have identified knowledge gaps among nursing personnel that may affect the quality of care. PURPOSE: compare the level of knowledge between nursing professionals and nursing assistant

Opportunities for advance practice nurses in the nursing facility.

Advance practice nurses (APNs) have emerged as valuable members of the nursing facility interdisciplinary team. They function in a variety of roles, including clinical care, administration, nursing consultation, and education. Positive outcomes in key indicators of care and reduction in costs to the healthcare systems have been attributed to their practice. Barriers to implementation of the role include regulatory issues, facility resistance, and difficulty adapting to the environment. Facilitation of the role is enhanced by collegial relationships and role negotiation. There is strength in th

We've got trouble: medications in assisted living.

The rise in assisted living facilities (ALFs), coupled with residents with increasingly complex conditions, leads to unanticipated problems linked to medication management. The purpose of this study was to describe one western state's scope of medication-related problems, the relationship of problems to facility characteristics, and the nature of the problems using state surveyors' reports from routine inspections and complaint investigations. Of the 1,335 ALFs surveyed for 2007-2008, 61.8% received a medication-related citation. Of the 1,558 allegations, 60.3% involved individual residents, w

Scope creep: when nursing practice moves beyond traditional boundaries: an evidence-based example using procedural sedation.

The finite boundaries of the scope of nursing practice are constantly changing. One could expect that with new technology and advances in science, the interventions and assessments nurses perform will change over time. The practice of nursing is governed by nursing, however, it is often challenged by our partners in medicine, and frequently driven by time constraints or reimbursement issues. This article reviews a case example in which nurses were asked to expand their practice to assume responsibility for duties that were once traditionally performed by physicians. An evaluation of a practice

Antepartum dalteparin versus no antepartum dalteparin for the prevention of pregnancy complications in pregnant women with thrombophilia (TIPPS): a multinational open-label randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Thrombophilias are common disorders that increase the risk of pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism and pregnancy loss and can also increase the risk of placenta-mediated pregnancy complications (severe pre-eclampsia, small-for-gestational-age infants, and placental abruption). We postulated that antepartum dalteparin would reduce these complications in pregnant women with thrombophilia. METHODS: In this open-label randomised trial undertaken in 36 tertiary care centres in five countries, we enrolled consenting pregnant women with thrombophilia at increased risk of venous th
