Formal versus informal interventions for challenging behaviour in persons with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Although effective, humane treatments exist for persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) who have challenging behaviour, little research has examined the extent to which clients receive formal, documented vs. undocumented interventions. METHODS: Caregivers (of 625 persons with ID living in community and institutional residences in Ontario, Canada) were interviewed to examine the prevalence of different types of interventions. RESULTS: Overall, 55% of the 2506 different interventions (for 1464 target behaviours) were informal (i.e. lacking documented input from a professional,

A nutritional rehabilitation program for persons with severe physical and developmental disabilities.

Our purpose was to design and implement a nutritional rehabilitation program for persons with severe developmental disabilities who resided in a long-term-care facility or a group home. We used weight for height (WH) to classify residents of both facilities into three groups: group 1 (n=32), WH less than 5th percentile (Z scores < or = -1.650), goal=gain weight; group 2 (n=21), WH between the 5th and 85th percentile (Z scores ranging from -1.645 to +1.030), goal=maintain present rate of weight gain; and group 3 (n=8), WH greater than 85th percentile (Z scores > or = +1.036), goal=slow down rat

Teaching key use to persons with severe disabilities in congregate living settings.

Key use remains overlooked for increasing independent material use by persons with severe mental retardation. In Experiment 1, a procedure to train key locating was evaluated in a multiple-probe withdrawal design across three groups of participants. Most participants located their keys when reinforced for doing so; however, key locating decreased when the reinforcement procedure was withdrawn. In Experiment 2, a multiple probe design across four participant groups was used to evaluate a training procedure to teach key use. Twenty of 25 participants used a key to open and lock their personal lo

Implications of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 for elderly persons.

Because the prevalence of disability increases proportionately with age, the expanding population of older adults is potentially the largest single group to benefit from the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) (Public Law 101-336). One fourth of elderly persons have functional disabilities acquired through age-related chronic and acute conditions. The ADA guarantees older adults with disabilities equality in the workplace and the community. It also enhances their opportunities to continue living independently as long as possible. Applications of the ADA for elderly persons with funct

An analysis of a group teaching procedure for persons with developmental disabilities.

This study evaluated whether a concurrent group teaching procedure, in which all students respond simultaneously, could be used for persons with moderate or severe mental retardation. The teaching procedure used was the Task Demonstration Model, a program based on stimulus-control research and the fading techniques of behavioral psychology. Three teachers and three groups of students participated. Results showed that the teachers increased their rates of questions and instructions, positive feedback, and use of functional materials, but they reduced their rate of prompts to almost zero. Indiscriminate characterization of persons with disabilities: strictly nosographic legislation without functional assessment.

The concept of a person with a disability has evolved from a medical-biological perspective to a biopsychosocial understanding that considers the dynamic interaction between functioning, disability, and contextual factors, as proposed by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. However, a tension can be observed between this model and legislation that automatically recognizes certain conditions as disabilities without the corresponding functional assessment. Among these conditions are monocular vision, autism spectrum disorder, and fibromyalgia. This opinion arti

Validation of the multiple disability multidimensional attitudes scale toward persons with disabilities.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the psychometric properties of a Multiple Disability Multidimensional Attitudes Scale Toward Persons with Disabilities (MD-MAS), focusing on four types of disabilities: anxiety disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), blindness, and schizophrenia. We developed new vignettes describing the situation of interacting with an individual with each type of disability. RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN: We recruited 991 participants from a crowdsourcing data collection tool (i.e., Prolific). Participants were randomly assigned to one of four online surveys depending o

Prevalence and modifiable risk factors for dementia in persons with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disability (ID) without Down syndrome (DS) are presumed to be at higher risk of developing dementia due to their lower baseline cognitive reserve. We aimed to determine the prevalence of dementia in people with ID without DS and to identify risk factors of dementia. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey and multicenter study in Japan. Adults with ID without DS residing in the facilities were included. Caregivers of all participants were interviewed by medical specialists, and participants suspected of having cognitive decline were examined directly. I

The portrayal of persons with disabilities in Arabic drama: A literature review.

BACKGROUND: The media plays a vital role in addressing the issues of society through audiovisual means that contribute to the transmission of media messages. Drama contributes to implement positive values or negative attitudes in people's minds towards various societal issues. The negative stereotypes shaped by drama about persons with disabilities (PWDs) have attracted the attention of the researchers. Therefore, Arabic drama is required to present a true portrait of PWDs that reflects their reality without exaggeration or discrimination. It is also required to re-correct the stereotyped imag

Prevalence and Influencing Factors of Metabolic Syndrome Among Persons with Physical Disabilities.

PURPOSE: Metabolic syndrome is an important cluster of coronary heart disease risk factors. However, it remains unclear to what extent metabolic syndrome is associated with demographic and potentially modifiable lifestyle factors among Korean persons with physical disabilities. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and influencing factors of metabolic syndrome among persons with physical disabilities using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort. METHODS: The Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were used to define metabolic syndrome influencing factors and pr

Evidence-Based Interventions for Increasing Work Participation for Persons With Various Disabilities.

Title I of the Americans With Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination in employment; however, 26 years later, employment rates for persons with disabilities hover at 34%. This systematic review investigates the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions to increase employment for people with various disabilities. Forty-six articles met the inclusion criteria for evidence-based interventions. The majority of studies assessed interventions for persons with mental health disabilities. Strong evidence was found for ongoing support and work-related social skills training prior to and during co

Current limits to reinforcer identification for some persons with profound multiple disabilities.

Fifteen persons with profound mental retardation were divided into two groups. One group was identified with chronic training needs by habilitative staff and the other group served as a control. In an attempt to identify a reinforcer, each participant received a preference assessment and a simple, low-effort treatment procedure. In Experiment 1, only individuals who approached at least one stimulus on 80% or more of the preference assessment trials ("high preference") showed reinforcement effects in treatment. However, three individuals showing high preference failed to show treatment effects.

Understanding medical students' attitudes towards and experiences with persons with disabilities and disability education.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, approximately one quarter of individuals are living with disabilities and receiving healthcare services. The undergraduate medical school curriculum provides an opportunity to improve the attitudes and skills of physicians working with persons with disabilities (PWD). OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding about fourth-year medical students' self-reported attitudes towards and experiences with PWD and disability education. We hypothesized that medical students would recall having education about disabilities, would be abl

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT): does the practice discriminate against persons with disabilities?

The most well-known goal of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is still to determine whether or not a fetus has trisomy 21. Since women often terminate the pregnancy upon a positive result, there is concern that the use of NIPT contributes to discrimination against persons with disabilities. If this concern is justified, it could have an impact on the wider social acceptability of existing testing practices and their potential further expansion. This paper demonstrates four different versions of the discrimination worry, indicates how international policy papers have reacted to them, and ide

Body Expression-Based Intervention Programs for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities: A Systematic Review.

The benefits of physical exercise on human health are widely known. However, the level of physical activity in the majority of the population is considered insufficient. People with intellectual disabilities (ID), in particular, show this lack of physical activity to a greater extent. It has been noted that the promotion of activities focused on corporal expression (CE) stimulates the motivation to carry out physical exercise in this population group. The aim of this study was to carry out a systematic review of the last ten years of CE programs carried out in people with ID. The criteria esta

Psychopharmacological treatments in persons with dual diagnosis of psychiatric disorders and developmental disabilities.

People with developmental disabilities are at considerable risk for the development of comorbid psychiatric conditions. Psychopharmacological treatments may have a crucial role in a multidisciplinary and multimodal approach to the management of psychopathology in this population. Psychiatric illnesses that are particularly amenable include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHDs) and antidepressants, mood stabilisers, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, and stimulants should be considered, respectively. ADHD may also respond to alpha(2)-a

Newer disability certification guidelines for persons with visual disabilities in India: A review.

Visual disability leads to functional impairment and limits an individual's activities of daily living, causing emotional, social, and economic hardship. The visual disability certificate issued by the Government of India is an important document through which social security services for persons with disability (PwDs) can be provided seamlessly. It ensures equal opportunities for PwDs and their full participation in nation building. New guidelines were formulated via "The Gazette of India," dated January 4, 2018 for disability certification. The purpose of the current review is to highlight t

Employment of persons with disabilities in the open labour market: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities are often disproportionately placed in part-time roles, confined to low occupational levels and face a heightened risk of job loss perpetuating a cycle of underemployment, leaving many to earn below the official poverty line. Despite progressive South African employment legislations, many companies still do not meet employment targets for employees with disabilities. OBJECTIVES: The scoping review aimed to summarise the literature and synthesise strategies used to employ and retain persons with disabilities in South African open labour market. METHOD: Sy
