Virtual Assessment of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in the Schools.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed stress on all aspects of the educational system. Many state departments of education acknowledged the disruption to individualized education program evaluation and implementation but insisted that evaluation timelines and services continue undisrupted. School psychologists were therefore forced to navigate the viability of virtual assessment without established research supporting this type of student evaluation. Formal assessments used in the identification of learning disabilities and other areas of disability were not standardized with virtual administration pro

Invited Commentary: The Use of Philosophy for Children (P4C) in Language Instruction for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children: A Systematic Review.

This review reveals the potential application of the Philosophy for Children (P4C) approach, which holds a significant place in the development of language and higher-order thinking skills, for the education of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) children. The review was conducted with a two-phase approach. In the first phase, 11 research articles encompassing 4,499 participants were systematically reviewed to evaluate studies that determined the effect of P4C on the language and thinking skills of hearing primary school students. The findings established that P4C is an evidence-based practice

Perceived disability from hearing and voice changes in the elderly.

AIM: Dysphonia and hearing loss are underestimated conditions in the elderly, despite their significant prevalence (18% and 50%, respectively) and their sociopsychological implications. Previous studies have shown that the reason for this lack of consideration is related to the general misconception of a simple age-related issue, as well as to the reduced communication requirements of this population, which can result in infrequent requests/supply of care. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate, within an elderly population, the subjective perception of hearing and voice dysfunctions

The complexity in deaf and hard-of-hearing multilingual learner education.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing Multilingual Learners (DMLs) are Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are either born outside of the country they currently receive schooling in or have both parents born outside of that country, using a language other than the national spoken language at home. This group is growing in numbers and contributes significantly to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in Deaf education. This systematic review synthesizes findings from 17 peer-reviewed empirical studies, identifying four educational levels relevant to DMLs: context, organization, educators, and s

Single-case design interventions for deaf disabled students: a systematic literature review.

This systematic review examined single-case design (SCD) interventions for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students with co-occurring disabilities (i.e., who are Deaf Disabled). Ten peer-reviewed studies met the inclusion criteria, targeting communication, behavior, or academic outcomes. Behavioral interventions demonstrated more durable generalization, while academic gains often required continued reinforcement. Study quality evaluated using Horner et al.'s indicators revealed two high-quality studies, four acceptable, and four below minimum standards, indicating notable methodological limitations.

Literacy and signing deaf students: a multi-national scoping review.

Many literature reviews or other types of reviews (e.g., meta-analyses, scoping reviews) in deaf education research are focused upon primarily or exclusively research that is performed in U.S. contexts or English-speaking contexts only. However, research that is conducted in non-English-speaking, non-U.S. settings that may be more likely to be multilingual, has value for our understanding of how deaf students using multiple languages may develop literacy skills. The objective of this review was to explore the literature on literacy development with deaf learners conducted outside of English-sp

The Limits of "Communication Mode" as a Construct.

Questions about communication mode (a.k.a. "communication options" or "communication opportunities") remain among the most controversial issues in the many fields that are concerned with the development and well-being of children (and adults) who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing. In this manuscript, we argue that a large part of the reason that this debate persists is due to limitations of the construct itself. We focus on what we term "the crucial question": namely, what kind of experience with linguistic input during infancy and toddlerhood is most likely to result in mastery of at least one la

Vision and hearing loss associated with lifetime drug use: NHANES 2013-2018.

BACKGROUND: One in four American adults has a disability. Individuals with disabilities are more likely to have mental health issues and use substances and are less likely to attend substance use rehabilitation compared to individuals without disabilities. However, most research about substance use and substance use rehabilitation does not focus specifically on sensory disabilities. OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to test the association between vision and/or hearing loss, lifetime drug use, and lifetime drug rehabilitation. METHODS: Data files from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surve

Interveners for Children Who Are Deafblind: The Parents' Perspective.

Students with a visual impairment and a concurring hearing impairment are considered deafblind under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004. Deafblindness is not limited to students who are totally blind and profoundly deaf; rather, it ensures that when students have a visual impairment as well as a hearing impairment that impacts their learning, appropriate services are in place for them to receive an appropriate education in the school setting. In the United States, the deafblind intervener model has been implemented in some states, whereby the intervener acts as a co

Addressing health disparities through promoting equity for individuals with intellectual disability.

Intellectual disabilities (ID) are conditions originating before the age of 18 that result in significant limitations in intellectual functioning and conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills. IDs affect 1 to 3% of the population. Persons with ID are more likely to have physical disabilities, mental health problems, hearing impairments, vision impairments and communication disorders. These co-existing disabilities, combined with the limitations in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behaviours, make this group of Canadians particularly vulnerable to health disparities. The purpose

'Telehealth for all': capitalising on the power of virtual healthcare for persons with disability in India.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual healthcare holds significant potential to advance inclusive healthcare for persons with disabilities in India, supporting the World Health Organization's goal of Universal Health Coverage. However, individuals with disabilities often face barriers to accessing virtual healthcare due to a lack of disability-inclusive infrastructure, technology, and operational support, which further limits equitable service delivery. This study aimed to investigate the experiences of persons with disabilities and their caregivers regarding virtual healthcare services in India. The focus wa

Comparing Auditory-Only and Audiovisual Word Learning for Children With Hearing Loss.

Although reducing visual input to emphasize auditory cues is a common practice in pediatric auditory (re)habilitation, the extant literature offers minimal empirical evidence for whether unisensory auditory-only (AO) or multisensory audiovisual (AV) input is more beneficial to children with hearing loss for developing spoken language skills. Using an adapted alternating treatments single case research design, we evaluated the effectiveness and efficiency of a receptive word learning intervention with and without access to visual speechreading cues. Four preschool children with prelingual heari

The Experiences of and Teaching Strategies for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Foreign Language Learners: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Although foreign language (FL) educational experiences for students with disabilities including deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students, are becoming more common, there is little research available on this topic. The purpose of the present review was to identify research examining DHH students' FL learning experiences and teaching strategies used in the FL class to facilitate language learning. The search showed that few studies have explored this area, and even fewer have met quality standards. Among the existing studies, the results revealed that communication methods in FL class instruction
