Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities : JARID2020eng
BACKGROUND: Within the context of the Special Interest Research Group (SIRG) on Persons with Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities (PIMD), researchers often discuss the methodological problems and challenges they are confronted with. The aim of the current article was to give an overview of these challenges.
METHODS: The challenges are centred on six topics. These reflect the main components of a study's design: (a) participant demarcation, (b) participant recruitment, (c) data collection and instruments, (d) data analysis, (e) ethics/including the "voice" of persons with PIMD and (

BACKGROUND: We investigated the number of teeth in middle-aged and older individuals with intellectual disability and evaluated the related factors.
METHODS: A questionnaire survey on oral health was administered to 604 persons over 40 years old with intellectual disabilities in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The questionnaire designed for this study included items on diagnosis of disability, severity of intellectual disability and type of residence. As oral-health-related factors, the proxy-reported number of teeth, family dentist, regular dental check-ups, problems during dental treatment and too

PURPOSE: The effective Attune and Stimulate-checklist improves sensitive responsiveness in caregivers of persons with severe intellectual disabilities. To widen access to the tool for implementation purposes, this paper describes the co-creative, iterative transformation process from checklist to app, and evaluates the user experience of this Attune & Stimulate-app (A&S-app).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, the A&S-app development, in which 50 parents and professionals were involved, was described according to a spiral development process model. Second, the A&S-app was evaluated by 15 other par

Background: Persons with intellectual disability have a significantly higher prevalence of diabetes than the general population. Special Olympics Fit Feet, a major screening process for evaluating foot health in persons with intellectual disability, has not included an assessment for the risk of diabetic foot ulcers thus far. A probable reason for this may be that clinicians in the past have felt that persons with intellectual disability were not capable of understanding how to complete the Semmes-Weinstein test for lack of protective sensation. A study was designed to assess whether the Speci

BACKGROUND: Previous studies show that the personal support networks of people with intellectual disability are smaller and less diverse than those of people without intellectual disability. This article aims to compare the characteristics of the personal networks of young people with and without intellectual disability.
METHOD: The Personal Network Analysis (McCarty, Revista Hispana Para El Análisis de Redes Sociales, 2010, 19, 242-271) was applied. The participants comprised 51 young people aged between 13 and 19, of whom 27 had an intellectual disability. The Egonet programme was used to c

INTRODUCTION: By age 60, 60% of adults with Down syndrome (DS) have dementia. Detecting dementia in persons with intellectual disability (ID) can be challenging because their underlying cognitive impairment can confound presentation of dementia symptoms and because adults with ID may have difficulty reporting symptoms. The National Task Group Early Detection Screen for Dementia (NTG-EDSD) was developed to aid detection of report of cognitive impairment in adults with ID. We implemented an educational curriculum using the NTG-EDSD and evaluated the impact of the intervention on professional car

BACKGROUND: Persons with profound intellectual disability (PID) are mostly not able to use assistive technology (AT) independently. Caregivers play an important mediating role in implementing AT in the daily life of persons with PID. Both first-order barriers, extrinsic to caregivers, and second-order barriers, intrinsic to caregivers, influence the attitudes and behaviors of caregivers with regard to AT-use. It could be asked if increased knowledge on and experience with AT may impact the effect of first- and second-order barriers. This study investigated how knowledge and experience influenc

BACKGROUND: There is not one case report of successful trauma treatment with the use of an evidence-based treatment method in people with substantially limited verbal capacities. This paper assessed the applicability of eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) in two clients with moderate ID, serious behavioural problems, and histories of negative life events.
METHOD: The 8-phase protocol of EMDR, a first-line treatment for psychological trauma, was applied.
RESULTS: In both cases, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms decreased in a total of only 6 and 5 sessions, r

BACKGROUND: Despite progress in the process of deinstitutionalisation, very little is known about the health conditions of people with intellectual disability (PWID) who live in large institutions and PWID living in small residential services, family homes or independent living within the community. Furthermore, there are no international comparison studies at European level of the health status and health risk factors of PWID living in fully staffed residential services with formal support and care compared with those living in unstaffed family homes or independent houses with no formal suppo

BACKGROUND: The publication of the DSM-III (American Psychiatric Association (APA), 1980) prompted a significant increase in interest and research on personality disorder (PD), and the concept has subsequently been incorporated into mental health legislation in the developed world. Despite this, such research on people with intellectual disability (ID) has been sporadic, with widely varying results. The present study addresses a number of criticisms directed at previous research.
METHOD: DSM-IV (APA, 2000) diagnoses of PD were made on 164 participants with ID on the basis of four independent

BACKGROUND: Accessing the emotional experiences of individuals with severe or profound intellectual disabilities is difficult. Physiological measures offer a promising way to bypass communicative, cognitive, and motor limitations in this population. Yet this emerging field lacks a comprehensive overview of methods used, variables studied, and potential values and pitfalls.
METHOD: A multidatabase systematic review (2008-2025), pre-registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42024629708), was conducted following JBI and PRISMA guidelines. From 5495 records, studies were screened at title, abstract, and ful

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use and the screening of nicotine dependence using the Fagerström test among adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) is an understudied public health issue. Despite lower reported prevalence relative to the general population, methodological challenges - particularly the suitability of self-reported tools - limit reliable measurement. This study assesses the convergent validity of the Fagerström test for nicotine dependence (FTND) by comparing it with exhaled carbon monoxide (CO), an objective biomarker of recent smoking, in a sample of adults with ID.
METHODS: Data w

Persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or intellectual disability (ID) have difficulties in planning, organising and coping with change, which impedes the learning of daily living skills (DLSs), social participation and self-management across different environmental settings. Assistive technologies (ATs) is a broad term encompassing devices and services designed to support individuals with disabilities, and if used in a self-controlled manner, they may contribute inclusion in all domains of participation. This comprehensive literature review aims to critically assess and unify existin

Mobility limitations are common in persons with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). Differences in balance and gait capacities between persons with ID and controls have mainly been demonstrated by instrumented assessments (e.g. posturography and gait analysis), which require sophisticated and expensive equipment such as force plates or a 3D motion analysis system. Most physicians and allied healthcare professionals working with persons with ID do not have such equipment at their disposal, so they must rely on clinical tests to determine whether balance and gait are affected. The aim of this study

BACKGROUND: Numerous barriers limit the participation of adults with intellectual disability (ID) in community fitness facilities (CFFs). Lack of disability-related certification requirements for personal trainers (PTs) highlights the need to revise certification standards and develop training modules that prepare PTs to provide individualized training for individuals with ID. Therefore, insight from PTs is needed.
OBJECTIVE: The Reasoned Action Approach was used to explore PTs' salient behavioral, normative, and control beliefs about providing personal training for a hypothetical adult with

PURPOSES: The main objective of this person-centered study was to identify the main profiles of physical fitness present among a large sample of youth with intellectual disabilities (ID). Moreover, we also investigated associations between several personal and sport-related characteristics and youth’s physical fitness profiles. METHODS: Participants were 375 Australian (N = 242) and Canadian (N = 133) youth (60.4% boys) with mild (49.6%) to moderate (50.4%) levels of ID. RESULTS: Latent profile analyses revealed five profiles, which were fully replicated over two time points taken with a one y

This article describes an innovative intervention based on narrative and life review therapy that is tailored to people with intellectual disability (ID) and psychiatric problems. The current study provides a first evaluation of the intervention. A symptom checklist (SCL-90) was used in a pre- and post-follow-up design, and a qualitative evaluation of the intervention was carried out with 25 participants. Results showed large changes in psychiatric symptoms, in particular on depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and interpersonal sensitivity. Participants were mainly positive in

BACKGROUND: Schools provide essential functions for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), but their vulnerability to infection with SARS-CoV-2 are a barrier to in-person learning. This qualitative study aimed to understand how weekly SARS-CoV-2 screening testing of students and staff could best facilitate in-school learning during the pandemic.
METHODS: Thirty-one focus groups were held with school staff and parents of children with IDD to examine the perceptions of COVID-19 during the 2020-2021 school year. Responses were analyzed using a directed thematic content

Persons with intellectual disability are a group at risk of being exposed to overly demanding problem-solving situations, which may produce learned helplessness. The research was based on the informational model of learned helplessness. The consequences of exposure to an unsolvable task and the ability to recognize the symptoms of cognitive exhaustion were tested in 120 students with mild intellectual disability. After the exposure to the unsolvable task, persons in the experimental group obtained lower results than the control group in the escape/avoidance learning task, but a similar result
