Borderline personality disorder: associations with psychiatric disorders, somatic illnesses, trauma, and adverse behaviors.

In one of the largest, most comprehensive studies on borderline personality disorder (BPD) to date, this article places into context associations between this diagnosis and (1) 16 different psychiatric disorders, (2) eight somatic illnesses, and (3) six trauma and adverse behaviors, e.g., violent crime victimization and self-harm. Second, it examines the sex differences in individuals with BPD and their siblings. A total of 1,969,839 Swedish individuals were identified from national registers. Cumulative incidence with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was evaluated after 5 years of follow-up from

Good Psychiatric Management of Borderline Personality Disorder and Co-Occurring Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder has been estimated to occur among about 4% of those with autism spectrum disorder. This co-occurrence can escalate the challenges of treating either condition separately, and patients often face severe challenges in psychosocial and occupational functioning. Clinicians need guidance to manage a high degree of complexity, using standards of care and a synthesis of what is known so far, to navigate the currently limited armamentarium of clinical tools. This article reviews the available scientific research and clinical experience with respect to diagnosis, psychoe

Relationship Pattern of Personality Disorder Traits in Major Psychiatric Disorders: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Normal personality development, gone awry due to genetic or environmental factors, results in personality disorders (PD). These often coexist with other psychiatric disorders, affecting their outcome adversely. Considering the heterogeneity of data, more research is warranted. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study on personality traits in psychiatric patients of a tertiary hospital, over 1 year. Five hundred and twenty-five subjects, aged 18-45 years, with substance, psychotic, mood, or neurotic disorders were selected by convenience sampling. They were evaluated for illness-r

Impact of Personality Disorder on the Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders in People Receiving Methadone-Assisted Treatment.

This study evaluates personality disorder as a moderator of psychiatric treatment response in people receiving methadone-assisted treatment. Participants (N = 125) were enrolled in a 12-week parent study that evaluated the impact of incentives on attendance to psychiatric care. All participants had a current DSM IV-R Axis I disorder and were classified based on presence of an Axis II disorder: Axis I-only (n = 46) versus Axis I + II (n = 79). All participants received an identical protocol of psychiatric and substance use disorder care. Although Axis I + II participants endorsed more psychiatr

Psychopharmacological treatment of 2195 in-patients with borderline personality disorder: A comparison with other psychiatric disorders.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are usually prescribed a variety of psychotropic drugs; however, none is recommended in the guidelines nor has any been approved for this indication. As data on drug prescriptions for BPD are sparse, cross-sectional data from the European Drug Safety Project AMSP were used to analyse drug prescriptions of 2195 in-patients with BPD between 2001 and 2011, and the mean values, confidence intervals and regression analyses were calculated. 70% of all BPD patients were medicated with antipsychotics and/or antidepressants, 33% with anticonvulsants,

Significance of personality disorders in the face of drop-outs from psychiatric hospitalizations. The case of selected psychiatric units.

OBJECTIVES: The World Health Organization's estimations indicate that about 50% of patients in well-developed countries may not adhere to long-term therapies. In the field of psychiatry, drop-outs from psychiatric treatment are particularly important. Personality disorders are a significant part of this sphere. The aim of this research was to empirically verify the hypothesis regarding the relation between comorbid personality disorders and drop-outs from treatment among patients of psychiatric wards. METHODS: This study was a prospective cohort study. 110 patients, hospitalized in 3 differen

[The influence of the development of psychiatric thought on the classification of personality disorders in the 19th century].

This article presents the development of psychiatric thought during the long nineteenth century in Europe and Croatia, where the development of the classification of personality disorders is presented in more detail. This diagnostic category is on the border between mentally healthy and ill, which most vividly opens essential questions in psychiatric science. These questions were and remain the subject of scientific research in psychiatry, and they gained their foundations and momentum in the long nineteenth century, which is reflected in the fruitful activity of a large number of doctors and

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine condition in women. Studies have shown that PCOS is associated with poor quality of life, anxiety, sadness, dissatisfaction with one's appearance, and sexual dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine whether a strong psycho-pathological personality is related to PCOS and whether this personality is related to the hyperandrogenic state. METHODS: Anthropometric, metabolic, hormonal, clinical, and psychological characteristics were examined in 90 Bahraini women with PCOS. After confirming the diagnosis of

Psychiatric disorders, suicidality, and personality among young men by sexual orientation.

Personality and its potential role in mediating risk of psychiatric disorders and suicidality are assessed by sexual orientation, using data collected among young Swiss men (n=5875) recruited while presenting for mandatory military conscription. Mental health outcomes were analyzed by sexual attraction using logistic regression, controlling for five-factor model personality traits and socio-demographics. Homo/bisexual men demonstrated the highest scores for neuroticism-anxiety but the lowest for sociability and sensation seeking, with no differences for aggression-hostility. Among homo/bisexua

Two clinical trial designs to examine personalized treatments for psychiatric disorders.

The National Institute of Mental Health Strategic Plan calls for the development of personalized treatment strategies for mental disorders. In an effort to achieve that goal, several investigators have conducted exploratory analyses of randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) data to examine the association between baseline subject characteristics, the putative moderators, and the magnitude of treatment effect sizes. Exploratory analyses are used to generate hypotheses, not to confirm them. For that reason, independent replication is needed. Here, 2 general approaches to designing confirmato

Psychiatric symptomatology in borderline and other personality disorders: dissociation and fragmentation as mediators.

This study considered the role of dissociation and personality fragmentation as psychological factors that might distinguish borderline and personality disorder (BPD) patients, and that might explain why BPD patients have higher levels of other psychiatric symptomatology than those with other personality disorders. Two groups of personality-disordered patients (personality disorders including BPD; personality disorders other than BPD) completed measures of dissociation, personality fragmentation, and psychiatric disturbance. The BPD group had higher levels of a number of aspects of psychiatric

Good Psychiatric Management of Borderline Personality Disorder: Foundations and Future Challenges.

Borderline personality disorder is a common condition characterized by numerous comorbid conditions, frequent use of clinical services, and an elevated lifetime risk for suicide. Good psychiatric management (GPM) was developed for patients with borderline personality disorder with the purpose of supporting wider community adoption and dissemination compared with existing therapies. The authors aimed to review the foundations and development of GPM, in particular the initial Canadian study assessing the therapy. They then reviewed the progress in research arising from the initial study and expl

Exploring screening for borderline personality disorder in pediatric inpatients with psychiatric Illness.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric illness associated with poor personal and interpersonal functioning. Screening for BPD in adolescents and provision of specialized treatment may improve life circumstances in vocations and relationships. The purpose of this study was to determine the number of pediatric inpatients who would screen positive for BPD with a self-rating measure, and to compare their personal and interpersonal characteristics with youth who did not screen positive. A survey with self-report measures was administered to patients to screen for BPD. The mea

Sexual behaviour and borderline personality disorder among female psychiatric inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to explore various facets of sexual behaviour in those with borderline personality disorder (BPD). METHOD: Using a cross-sectional approach and a sample of convenience, we surveyed 126 female psychiatric inpatients regarding their sexual histories as well as BPD symptoms on two self-report measures. RESULTS: Compared to participants who were not positive on both measures of BPD (the nonBPD group; n = 52), those who were positive on both measures (the BPD group; n = 70) reported a greater number of sexual partners, and were more likely to repo

Sensitivity to noise in a community sample: I. Measurement of psychiatric disorder and personality.

A sample of 77 women of high and low noise sensitivity, living in areas of high and low exposure to aircraft noise drawn from the 1977 West London Survey, were interviewed in the community in 1980. Women of high, intermediate and low noise sensitivity in 1980 were compared for measures of psychiatric disorder, personality and reactivity to the other sensory stimuli. In addition, the noise sensitivity measures defining the three groups in 1980 were compared with further measures of noise sensitivity. High noise sensitive women exhibited significantly more psychiatric symptoms, higher neuroticis
