LidSonic V2.0: A LiDAR and Deep-Learning-Based Green Assistive Edge Device to Enhance Mobility for the Visually Impaired.

Over a billion people around the world are disabled, among whom 253 million are visually impaired or blind, and this number is greatly increasing due to ageing, chronic diseases, and poor environments and health. Despite many proposals, the current devices and systems lack maturity and do not completely fulfill user requirements and satisfaction. Increased research activity in this field is required in order to encourage the development, commercialization, and widespread acceptance of low-cost and affordable assistive technologies for visual impairment and other disabilities. This paper propos

Legal personhood and legal capacity: the case of the locked-in syndrome.

The situation of persons diagnosed with locked-in syndrome (LIS) raises a significant legal challenge. As a consequence of a brainstem stroke, they are quadriplegic and lack articulate speech but have normal visual perception, bodily sensations, consciousness, and cognitive functions. It is only with human and technological assistance that they can communicate, express their will, make responsible decisions, and exert their civil rights. Insofar as they can communicate, there seems in principle to be no reason for restricting their legal capacity. This, however, has not always been recognized.

Prevalence and causes of childhood blindness in India: A systematic review.

Childhood blindness is one of the priority targets of Vision 2020-Right To Sight due to its impact on the psychological and social growth of the child. An extensive search was performed to locate research papers on childhood blindness prevalence and its causes in the community based and blind schools, respectively, conducted from 1990 onward up to the present. Cross references were also manually searched along with expert consultation to enlarge the reference data. A total of five community-based studies on the prevalence including two refractive error studies conducted all over India in child

How does the Nigerian health system serve people living with disabilities? A socio-ecological analysis on people living with visual impairment.

People living with disabilities (PLWD) in Nigeria experience significant disparities in health outcomes and access to care. Among them, individuals living with visual impairment (VI) face compounded barriers due to structural inequities and social exclusion. This paper explores how the Nigerian health system serves PLWD through a socioecological lens, with a focus on those living with VI. We conducted a narrative review using databases such as Medline, Scopus, Embase and Google Scholar, along with policy repositories, to identify peer-reviewed and grey literature. Inclusion criteria focused on

Crowding under scotopic and photopic vision in albino and normal-sighted participants.

Crowding is a phenomenon in which the ability to recognize an object in a clutter deteriorates. It is, therefore, a fundamental aspect of object recognition and crucial in deciphering resolution. For visually impaired individuals, deficiency in crowding has a tremendous effect on vision and may reflect and predict the amount of deterioration in vision. It is well established that albinos suffer much more from crowding than normally sighted individuals under daylight luminance conditions. However, to our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate crowding in albino participants under low

Network QoS Impact on Spatial Perception through Sensory Substitution in Navigation Systems for Blind and Visually Impaired People.

A navigation system for individuals suffering from blindness or visual impairment provides information useful to reach a destination. Although there are different approaches, traditional designs are evolving into distributed systems with low-cost, front-end devices. These devices act as a medium between the user and the environment, encoding the information gathered on the surroundings according to theories on human perceptual and cognitive processes. Ultimately, they are rooted in sensorimotor coupling. The present work searches for temporal constraints due to such human-machine interfaces, w

The MAPS: Toward a Novel Mobility Assistance System for Visually Impaired People.

This paper introduces the design of a novel indoor and outdoor mobility assistance system for visually impaired people. This system is named the MAPS (Mobility Assistance Path Planning and orientation in Space), and it is based on the theoretical frameworks of mobility and spatial cognition. Its originality comes from the assistance of two main functions of navigation: locomotion and wayfinding. Locomotion involves the ability to avoid obstacles, while wayfinding involves the orientation in space and ad hoc path planning in an (unknown) environment. The MAPS architecture proposes a new low-cos

An intelligent optimized object detection system for disabled people using advanced deep learning models with optimization algorithm.

Visually impaired persons face several problems in their day-to-day lives, and technological intermediaries might help them encounter their challenges. Among other beneficial technologies, object detection (OD) is a computer technology related to image processing and computer vision (CV), which identifies and describes objects like vehicles, animals, and persons from digital videos and images. Visually impaired persons (VIPs) can utilize the OD approach for detecting problems and recognizing services to offer secure and informative navigation. Recently, machine learning (ML) and deep learning

A Social Justice Approach to Assistive Technology and Well-Being of People With Visual Disabilities in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Qualitative Narrative Study.

BACKGROUND: The United Nations' third Sustainable Development Goal emphasizes ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being (WB) for all, which requires effective assistive technology (AT) for persons with disabilities. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), however, AT remains largely inaccessible, and high abandonment rates indicate that many existing solutions fail to meet users' needs. To improve AT design and effectiveness, a deeper understanding of users' lived experiences and the ways AT influences WB is essential. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how technology creates o

What is low vision? A re-evaluation of definitions.

PURPOSE: To re-evaluate definitions of low vision, visual impairment, and disability. METHODS: We review current definitions of legal blindness and low vision and how these definitions are variably based on disability or impairment. We argue for a definite distinction being made between criteria for visual impairment and visual disability, low vision being defined as the presence of a visual impairment that results in a disability. Visual impairment is defined according to population norms and a statistical cut-off is used. Visual disability is defined by consideration of the level of visual

Multimodal Navigation System for Visually Impaired Users Using Environmental Perception and Vision-Language Models.

Visually impaired users face significant challenges in navigating complex indoor environments due to limited spatial awareness and lack of real-time semantic guidance. This paper proposes a multimodal navigation system integrating environmental perception with vision-language models (VLMs). It provides context-aware and explainable guidance without requiring additional infrastructure. The proposed system combines RTAB-Map for localization, YOLO-World for open-vocabulary object detection, and a lightweight language model for semantic reasoning and natural language interaction. To evaluate our s

A phonic Braille recognition system based on a self-powered sensor with self-healing ability, temperature resistance, and stretchability.

Braille recognition is of great significance for the visually impaired and blind people to achieve convenient communication and learning. A self-powered Braille recognition sensing system with long-term survivability and phonic function could provide those people with greatly enhanced access to information and thus improve their living quality. Herein, we develop a skin-like self-powered Braille recognition sensor with self-healing, temperature-resistant and stretchable properties, which is further connected with the designed audio system to realize real-time conversion from mechanical stimulu

Accessible Tutoring Platform Using Audio-Tactile Graphics Adapted for Visually Impaired People.

One of the problems faced by people with blindness is access to materials presented in graphical form. There are many alternative forms of providing such information, but they are very often ineffective or have certain limitations. The development of mobile devices and touch sensors enabled the development of new tools to support such people. This study presents a solution called an accessible tutoring platform, using audio-tactile graphics for people with blindness. We aimed to research the influence of the developed platform for the alternative presentation of graphics information on better
