Perylene diimide and ferrocene functionalized MnO2 nanorods for ratiometric detection of alkaline phosphatase.

A positively charged perylene diimide (PDI) with strong π-π interaction was employed alongside aminoferrocene (Fc-NH2) as potential-resolved probes to construct a ratiometric biosensor. MnO₂/Au nanorods first served as nanocarriers to load both probes. The proposed sensing mechanism relies on alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-triggered generation of ascorbic acid (AA), which reduces MnO₂ nanorods to Mn²⁺, leading to the release of Fc-NH2 from the electrode surface while concurrently enhancing the exposure of trimethylaminoethyl perylene diimide (TMPDI) strongly absorbed on GCE through π-π conjugation

Ultrafast Dynamics of Photoinduced Electron Transfer in Bay-Aryl-Substituted Perylene Diimide Derivatives.

Blends of donors and acceptors have been widely used in bulk-heterojunction solar cells to have exciton formation and charge separation by photoinduced electron transfer (PET). In this work, we have synthesized perylene diimide (PDI)-based materials having different aryl substituents at the bay positions (4-Anisyl-PDI, CBZ-N-Ph-PDI, and 4-Pyridyl-PDI) to understand the excited-state dynamics of electron transfer. The detailed photophysics was studied using steady-state as well as ultrafast dynamics of the excited states in different solvents. CBZ-N-Ph-PDI showed tremendous effects of the solve

Self-assembly behaviors of perylene- and naphthalene-crown macrocycle conjugates in aqueous medium.

The synthesis of conjugates of perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) modified with two benzo-21-crown-7 ethers (B21C7) are herein described. Their self-assembly behavior in various solvents was investigated particularly in aqueous medium, due to the recently discovered hydrophilic properties of B21C7 crown macrocycle. An unexpected fluorescence quenching phenomenon was observed in the PDI-B21C7 macrocycle conjugate in chloroform. The detailed UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of these PDI/NDI derivatives in different solvents as well as their morphologies were investiga

Photophysical and quantum chemical study on a J-aggregate forming perylene bisimide monomer.

Perylene bisimides (PBIs) are excellent dyes and versatile building blocks for supramolecular structures. Only recently have PBIs been shown to depict absorption characteristics of J-aggregates. We apply electronic structure calculations and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy to the monomeric, bay-substituted building-block of a PBI aggregate in dichloromethane to investigate its electronically excited states in order to provide the ingredients for the description of excitons in the aggregates and their annihilation processes. The PBI S(1)←S(0) absorption spectrum and the S(1)→S(0) emission s

Insights into Growth of a Photoactive Layer Based on Perylene Diimide Bearing Alkoxysilane Groups.

The chemical grafting of organic photosensitizers onto solid surfaces has gained increasing attention lately as an effective strategy for the formation of stable, functional layers, with promising applications in areas such as antimicrobial coatings and optoelectronic devices. In this work, a perylene diimide (PDI) derivative bearing alkoxysilane groups, APTES-PDI-APTES, was synthesized and chemically grafted onto a glass surface. The presence of two alkoxysilanes enabled competing processes to occur, i.e., condensation reactions, which led to the formation of complex multilayer structures, an

Redox-Selective Control of Perylene Diimide Enables Fast, Durable Aqueous Sodium-Ion Storage.

Confining the redox activity of perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) to the single-electron neutral/radical-anion couple enables ultrafast, durable aqueous sodium-ion storage. Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry and comparative OCP measurements identify hydrogen evolution and oxygen-associated reoxidation as self-discharge pathways of the dianion, motivating operation within a restricted potential window. XPS and EDX measurements support Na-ion coordination to reduced carbonyls as the principal charge-compensation mechanism. In a symmetric PTCDI cell, the selected redox couple re

Resolving Energy Transfer Dynamics at the Quantum Dot Gels-Perylene Diimide Hybrid Interface.

Semiconductor-molecular hybrids provide a platform for controlling excited-state transfer in photocatalysis and optoelectronics. While quantum dots (QDs) are promising semiconductors, they are often capped with surface ligands that limit accessibility and hinder coupling with molecular species. QD gels are a porous three-dimensional network of QDs that can address the limitations of QDs, making them especially advantageous for semiconductor-molecular hybrid systems; however, excited-state transfer dynamics remain largely unexplored. Here, we report energy transfer dynamics from a CdS QD gel to

Polydopamine-Mediated Interfacial Engineering of Perylene Diimide Organic Semiconductors for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Efficient and durable hydrogen evolution with PDI-based organic supramolecular photocatalysts remains limited by insufficient surface-active sites, structural instability and inefficient charge utilization. Here, we design a bioinspired polydopamine (PDA)-mediated interface to construct a PDA-coated PDI-COOH (PDI-COOH@PDA) photocatalyst. The optimized Pt/PDI-COOH@PDA achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 18.8 mmol g-1 h-1 and an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 2.1% at 420 nm, representing a 3.5-fold enhancement over Pt/PDI-COOH. Rather than acting as a passive coating, PDA functions as an acti

Hole-transfer dyads and triads based on perylene monoimide, quaterthiophene, and extended tetrathiafulvalene.

Two families of dyad and triad systems based on perylene monoimide (PMI), quaterthiophene (QT), and 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene (extended tetrathiafulvalene, exTTF) molecular components have been designed and synthesized. The dyads (D1 and D2) are of the PMI-QT type and the triads (T1 and T2) of the PMI-QT-exTTF type. The two families differ in the saturated or unsaturated nature of the linker groups (ethynylene in D1 and T1, ethylene in D2 and T2) that bridge the molecular components. The dyads and triads have been characterized by electrochemical, photophysical, an

Diboron-Doped Perylene-Based Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons for Enhancing Charge Transport: A Theoretical Perspective.

The enhancement of the optoelectronic properties of organic conjugation materials through boron doping may reshape current understanding, with boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) poised to be high-performance organic optoelectronic materials. However, the impact of boron doping on charge transport remains underexplored. In this study, the effects of diboron doping, including both dense and dispersed doping, along with further π-extension on the electronic structure, stacking pattern, and charge transport of perylene-based PAHs were systematically investigated using density-func

From molecular design to immune remodeling: Advances in perylene diimide-based multimodal cancer therapies.

Perylene diimide (PDI) is a programmable theranostic platform that combines high photostability with facile medicinal-chemistry modification at the imide and bay positions. Recent advances in donor-acceptor tuning, π-conjugation extension/fusion, and aggregation control have pushed its absorption into the near-infrared II (NIR-II) window (1000-1700 nm), and enabled programmable partitioning between photothermal conversion and Type I/II photodynamic pathways under low irradiance. This review primarily surveys PDI derivatives reported from 2015 through 2025. We focus on mechanisms that move beyo

Impact of Semiconducting Perylene Diimide Nanoparticle Size on Lymph Node Mapping and Cancer Imaging.

Semiconducting molecules of perylene diimide (PDI) with strong light absorption properties in the near-infrared region and good biocompatibility have received increasing attention in the field of theranostics, especially as photoacoustic (PA) imaging agents. Herein, we report a series of [64Cu]-labeled PDI nanoparticles (NPs) of different sizes (30, 60, 100, and 200 nm) as dual positron emission tomography (PET) and PA imaging probes and photothermal therapy agents. The precise size control of the PDI NPs can be achieved by adjusting the initial concentration of PDI molecules in the self-assem

Synergetic Solvent Engineering of Film Nanomorphology to Enhance Planar Perylene Diimide-Based Organic Photovoltaics.

Solvent additive has proven as a useful protocol for improving the film nanomorphology of polymer donor (D): fullerene acceptor (A) blends in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic cells. By contrast, the effect of such solvent additive on nonfullerene BHJ cells based on perylene diimide acceptor, for instance, is less effective because of their highly planar structure and strong π-aggregation in solid state. FRET and ligand related NON-FRET processes in single quantum dot-perylene bisimide assemblies.

Nanoassemblies are formed via self-assembly of ZnS capped CdSe quantum dots (QD) and perylene bisimide dyes (PBI). Upon assembly formation with functionalized dye molecules the QD photoluminescence (PL) is quenched. Quenching has been assigned partly to FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) and NON-FRET processes. By means of time resolved single particle spectroscopy of immobilized QD-dye assemblies, it is demonstrated that NON-FRET processes are due to new non-radiative decay channels caused by the assembly formation process itself. Immobilized (single) assemblies exhibit the same pr

Ratiometric Fluorescence Sensing of Aflatoxin B1 Using a Cationic Perylene Probe and Rhodamine B.

As one of the most toxic and prevalent mycotoxins, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) poses a persistent threat to food safety and public health due to its widespread contamination of cereal commodities and its well-documented carcinogenic, genotoxic, and hepatotoxic effects. Although fluorescence sensing provides a rapid approach to AFB1 screening, most existing fluorescence strategies rely on antibodies or aptamers, which are costly, laborious, and susceptible to environmental degradation; moreover, single-emission readouts remain vulnerable to variations in probe concentration, excitation conditions, and

Dissipative Regenerative Chemiluminescence in Water: A Perylene-Based Out-of-Equilibrium Light-Emitting System.

Living systems maintain functional states through the continuous dissipation of chemical energy, a principle that remains a formidable challenge to replicate in synthetic molecular architectures. In such context, while classical chemiluminescence relies on irreversible bond-breaking events that consume the luminophore, regenerative chemiluminescence (RCL) offers a circular alternative based on electron-transfer cycles. However, traditional RCL remains constrained by harsh operating conditions and requires isolation of reactive intermediates. Here, we report the development of a water-soluble P

Symmetry-breaking charge separation in perylene diimide trimers: effects of aggregation and solvent polarity.

Symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) is a fundamental process in natural photosynthetic systems, serving as the primary trigger for electron transfer and ultimately leading to the formation of a charge separated state. This mechanism has also been leveraged in optoelectronic devices to minimize energy loss and improve solar energy conversion efficiency. However, in organic solar cell (OSC) studies, SB-CS has predominantly been observed in polar environments, and the roles of molecular aggregation in modulating this process remain unclear. Herein, we investigated the influence of aggrega
