Early Maladaptive Schemas as Core Therapeutic Targets in Eating Disorders and Obesity: A Schema Therapy-Informed Network Analysis.

Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are stable cognitive-emotional patterns central to the psychopathology of eating disorders (EDs) and obesity. This study used a schema therapy-informed network analysis to explore the structure and significance of EMSs in people with anorexia nervosa (AN, n = 129), bulimia nervosa (BN, n = 124), binge-eating disorder (BED, n = 166), and obesity (n = 152). Networks were modelled using the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S3), with expected influence as the main centrality, in a final sample of 571 patients. In AN, the most central schemas were Defectiveness/Shame

Poverty and fatalism: Impacts on the community dynamics and on hope in Brazilian residents.

The aim of this study was to analyze the consequences of poverty on expressions of fatalism, hope, and sense of community of two Brazilian States: Ceará and Rio Grande do Sul. Seven-hundred and thirty-one people, divided in four groups (extreme poverty, poverty, median income, and adequate income) answered a questionnaire. The variables sense of community and hope were found to be predictors of fatalism. Individuals in situations of poverty and extreme poverty showed high indices of fatalism, pessimism, divinity control, and luck, and low indices of hope and sense of community. Individuals wit

Association of General Personality Traits with Outcomes in Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Multicenter, Cross-Sectional, Prospective Trial.

BACKGROUND: The influence of psychological traits such as depression on postoperative outcomes after total hip arthroplasty (THA) is known, but data on general personality traits, such as optimism and pessimism, remain scarce. Understanding the impact of optimism and pessimism on postoperative outcomes in THA patients could provide valuable insights for preoperative patient assessments and postoperative care strategies. We hypothesized that patients with higher levels of optimism would demonstrate superior functional outcomes and that the opposite applies to pessimistic patients. METHODS: A p

Association Between Hearing Loss and Multiple Negative Emotional States in the US Hispanic Population.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss (HL) has been linked to commonly studied detrimental mood states, such as loneliness and depression. However, its relationship with other negative emotions remained largely unstudied. We explore the association between HL and anxiety, anger, hostility, poor self-esteem, and pessimism in a national cohort of US Hispanic adults. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Multicentered US national epidemiologic study (Hispanic Community Health Study). METHODS: Subjects were ages 18 to 75 with completed audiometric and emotional survey data. Multivariable regressions

Beliefs about depression relate to active and avoidant coping in high-symptom adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Perceptions of personal attributes as less malleable are associated with more severe depression symptoms and less active coping in youth. Perceptions of depression itself as relatively fixed have been linked to more severe depression symptoms; however, it is not known how beliefs about depression relate to active and avoidant coping behaviors in particular. METHODS: We gathered information about beliefs about depression and activation and avoidance behaviors among 104 adolescents with high depression symptoms. The primary depression belief examined was prognostic pessimism, or the

[Network model of mental disorders: Application and interest in post-stroke depression].

In contrast to the classic models in psychopathology, the network model considers that the temporal interactions between symptoms are the causes of their occurrence. This model could also be particularly suitable for understanding the processes involved in post-stroke depression. The aim of this paper is to perform a network analysis in order to describe the temporal dynamic of the links existing between depression symptoms during the acute phase after stroke. Twenty-five patients (64% male, mean age 58.1±14.9 years old) hospitalized for a minor stroke (no neurocognitive or motor impairment) w

When medical training amplifies therapeutic nihilism: a cross-national study of healthcare professional attitudes toward stroke recovery in Central Africa.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals' beliefs about stroke recovery profoundly influence rehabilitation outcomes. While therapeutic pessimism has been documented in high-income countries, no study has quantified these attitudes in sub-Saharan Africa or examined their correlation with clinical practice patterns. OBJECTIVE: To quantify therapeutic pessimism among Central African healthcare professionals using a validated assessment instrument and examine its relationship with rehabilitation intensity preferences and treatment discontinuation patterns. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of 776 par

Investigating the Genetic Diversity of DRD2 and OXTR Genes in the Iranian Population and Its Relationship with Personality Traits.

By analyzing genetic polymorphisms in the genes of patients and control subjects, it is possible to find the correlation of these factors with the phenotypic variation as mental disorders to propose hypotheses about the possible mechanisms of specific diseases. Accordingly, in the present study, the role of oxytocin receptor and dopamine D2 receptor polymorphisms in the personality traits of optimistic, pessimistic and intermediate individuals was investigated. In this study, the polymorphism of DRD2 receptors and oxytocin receptor genes in saliva samples of Iranian volunteers was investigated

Risk and protective factors of psychological pain using machine learning.

Psychological pain is of vital importance due to its link to suicidality. The present study sought to examine the psychometric properties of A Brief Measure of Unbearable Psychache, to investigate the roles of psychological distress, pessimism, meaning in life, hope, and demographic variables (age, gender, perceived economic status, marital status, and education level) in predicting psychological pain, to construct an optimal prediction model using a machine learning approach, to rank the feature importance of the possible predictors of psychological pain and to explain the contributions and d

Interpersonal discrimination and depressive symptomatology: examination of several personality-related characteristics as potential confounders in a racial/ethnic heterogeneous adult sample.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that reports of interpersonal discrimination result in poor mental health. Because personality characteristics may either confound or mediate the link between these reports and mental health, there is a need to disentangle its role in order to better understand the nature of discrimination-mental health association. We examined whether hostility, anger repression and expression, pessimism, optimism, and self-esteem served as confounders in the association between perceived interpersonal discrimination and CESD-based depressive symptoms in a race/ethnic heterogeneo

Stereotyping starlings are more 'pessimistic'.

Negative affect in humans and animals is known to cause individuals to interpret ambiguous stimuli pessimistically, a phenomenon termed 'cognitive bias'. Here, we used captive European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) to test the hypothesis that a reduction in environmental conditions, from enriched to non-enriched cages, would engender negative affect, and hence 'pessimistic' biases. We also explored whether individual differences in stereotypic behaviour (repetitive somersaulting) predicted 'pessimism'. Eight birds were trained on a novel conditional discrimination task with differential rewards

Reward-related activation of fronto-striatal regions scaled negatively with C-reactive protein.

BACKGROUND: Depression is characterized by divergent changes in positive and negative affect. Emerging roles of inflammation in depression portend avenues for novel immunomodulator-based monotherapy, targeting mechanistically distinct symptoms such as anhedonia and pessimism. METHODS: To investigate links between these divergent affective components and inflammation, we used a probabilistic reinforcement-learning fMRI paradigm, testing for evidence of hyposensitivity to reward, and hypersensitivity to punishment in low-inflammation depression cases (loCRP depression; CRP ≤ 3 mg/L; N = 48), hi

How aging anxiety relates to self-rated health in middle-aged and older adults: the role of psychological pathways.

OBJECTIVE: Aging anxiety is not only a critical practical issue for understanding the psychology of middle-aged and older adults, but also a key pathway for improving their health levels, optimizing aging policies, and achieving active and healthy aging. Existing research has insufficiently addressed the pathways and heterogeneity through which aging anxiety impacts health. This study aims to reveal the effects of aging anxiety on the health of middle-aged and older adults, its underlying mechanisms, and the differences in its impact across various groups. METHODS: Drawing on large-scale data

Early maladaptive schemas, emotion regulation, coping with stress, quality of life, and psychological symptoms in psoriasis disease.

This study examined relationships between Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS), emotion regulation, coping styles, and psoriasis outcomes in Istanbul, Turkey. Participants included 100 psoriasis patients (ages 25-45) and 107 healthy controls. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Psoriasis patients scored significantly higher on six schemas: Emotional Deprivation, Approval Seeking, Pessimism, Self-Sacrifice, Punitiveness, and Unrelenting Standards (Cohen's d = 0.42-0.89). They also demonstrated greater emotion regulation difficulties and reduced adaptive coping. Mediation analyses

Attenuated interoceptive processing in individuals with major depressive disorder and high repetitive negative thinking.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic symptom associated with poor outcomes in major depressive disorder (MDD). MDD is characterized by altered interoception, which has also been associated with poor outcomes. The present study investigated whether RNT is directly associated with altered interoceptive processing. Interoceptive awareness toward the heart and stomach was probed on the Visceral Interoceptive Attention (VIA) task with fMRI in MDD individuals who were propensity-matched on the severity of depression and anxiety symptoms and relevant demographics but different in R

Optimism, social support and psychosocial functioning among women with breast cancer.

Personality, psychosocial, demographic and medical variables have been identified as correlates of adjustment to breast cancer and quality of life (QoL). Most studies have examined relationships between personality, social support and adjustment to cancer in predominantly middle-class Caucasian samples, thus limiting the generalizability of their findings. Eighty-one female outpatients at a medical oncology breast clinic in a county general hospital serving primarily indigent Hispanic and African-American patients completed measures assessing demographic and medical information, health-related

Evidence for the association between physiological and emotional states in adolescents and young adults without psychopathology under ecologically valid conditions.

Well-powered studies on the physiological concomitants underlying affect and its regulation during emerging adulthood are warranted to provide novel insight into mental health. The association between autonomic nervous system activity and emotional states occurring under natural conditions in daily life was investigated in individuals (N = 549, age 14-21, females 45.6%) without any lifetime mental disorder from an epidemiological cohort study in Germany. Using ecological momentary assessment, mood and optimism/pessimism were assessed over 4 days simultaneously with continuous heart rate monito
