An aggressive nonconsumptive effect mediates pest control and multipredator interactions in a coffee agroecosystem.

Natural pest control is an alternative to pesticide use in agriculture, and may help to curb insect declines and promote crop production. Nonconsumptive interactions in natural pest control that historically have received far less attention than consumptive interactions, may have distinct impacts on pest damage suppression and may also mediate positive multipredator interactions. Additionally, when nonconsumptive effects are driven by natural enemy aggression, variation in alternative resources for enemies may impact the strength of pest control. Here we study control of the coffee berry borer

Bt maize can provide non-chemical pest control and enhance food safety in China.

China is the world's second-largest maize producer and consumer. In recent years, the invasive fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) has adversely affected maize productivity and compromised food security. To mitigate pest-inflicted food shortages, China's Government issued biosafety certificates for two genetically modified (GM) Bt maize hybrids, Bt-Cry1Ab DBN9936 and Bt-Cry1Ab/Cry2Aj Ruifeng 125, in 2019. Here, we quantitatively assess the impact of both Bt maize hybrids on pest feeding damage, crop yield and food safety throughout China's maize belt. Without a need to resort to s

High Prevalence of Sensitization to Mites and Insects in Greenhouses Using Biologic Pest Control.

BACKGROUND: Mites and insects are widely used as biologic pest control in greenhouses. A few studies have reported sensitization to mites among greenhouse workers, but the prevalence of sensitization to pest control insects is not known. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the prevalence of IgE-mediated sensitization to pests and their control organisms in the population of exposed greenhouse workers and the relationship between sensitization and allergic symptoms. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, we interviewed 117 tomato and cucumber greenhouse workers from eight companies that use biolog

Exposure to professional pest control treatments and the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Previous studies suggest that exposure to pesticides increases the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The aim of this analysis was to investigate whether professional pest treatments in or around the home before birth or during childhood increased the risk of childhood ALL. Data from 388 cases and 870 frequency-matched controls were analyzed using unconditional logistic regression, adjusting for study matching variables and potential confounders, to calculate odds ratios (ORs). A meta-analysis of our findings with the published findings of previous studies was also conducted

Development of a recombinant baculovirus expressing an insect-selective neurotoxin: potential for pest control.

Recombinant nuclear polyhedrosis viruses (NPVs) expressing insect-selective toxins, hormones, or enzymes could enhance their insecticidal properties. We have constructed a recombinant, polyhedrin-positive Autographa californica NPV (AcNPV) that is orally infectious and expresses an insect-selective toxin (AaIT), isolated from the scorpion Androctonus australis, under the control of the p10 promoter. Bioassays with the recombinant baculovirus on 2nd instar larvae of Heliothis virescens demonstrated a significant decrease in the time to kill (LT50 88.0 hours) compared to wild-type AcNPV (LT50 12

Dilemmas in the Management of Liminal Rodents-Attitudes of Dutch Pest Controllers.

When non-human animals are labeled as 'pests', their moral status and welfare seem relatively unimportant. In a multi-stakeholder project, we develop an assessment frame for a more responsible rodent management that includes animal welfare. An online survey among 129 Dutch pest controllers was carried out in order to find out more about pest controllers' attitudes about animal welfare. Respondents indicate to consider animal welfare in their job. They see differences in the welfare impact of different rodent control methods. A dilemma may occur when methods with a high impact, such as rodentic

Drosophila melanogaster: a model organism for controlling Dipteran vectors and pests.

Beta-carbonic anhydrases (β-CAs) have been recently reported to be present in many protozoan and metazoan species, whereas it is absent in mammals. In this review, we introduce β-CA from Drosophila melanogaster as a model enzyme for pesticide development. These enzymes can be targeted with various enzyme inhibitors, which can have deleterious effects on pathogenic and other harmful organisms. Therefore, β-CAs represent a new potential target to fight against Dipteran vectors and pests relevant to medicine, veterinary medicine, and agriculture.

Biological control of vertebrate pests using virally vectored immunocontraception.

Species-specific viruses are being genetically engineered to produce contraceptive biological controls for pest animals such as mice, rabbits and foxes. The virus vaccines are intended to trigger an autoimmune response in the target animals that interferes with their fertility in a process termed virally vectored immunocontraception. Laboratory experiments have shown that high levels of infertility can be induced in mice infected with recombinant murine cytomegalovirus and ectromelia virus expressing reproductive antigens as well as in rabbits using myxoma virus vectors. The strategies used to

Rodent control on the front line: knowledge and practices of pest controllers on the use of anticoagulant rodenticides.

BACKGROUND: Synanthropic rodents are globally perceived as pests because of their adaptability to anthropogenic environments, and result in significant challenges to food and health security. Rodent control with anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) has been widely implemented to minimize economic losses, despite concerns about the impacts of ARs. This study aims to evaluate AR use and knowledge among pest management professionals (PMPs). Using an online survey, we aimed to: (i) assess PMPs' training; (ii) identify commonly used control methods; (iii) evaluate dependency on ARs; and (iv) evaluate P

Parkinson-PEST: protocol for a case-control study on environmental risk factors and Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence suggests that a part of the burden of Parkinson's disease (PD) can be explained by exposure to environmental factors, including pesticides, heavy metals, solvents, and air pollution. However, several questions remain unanswered, pertaining to the associations with PD of environmental factors that are still in use today; the added risks of co-exposure to multiple environmental factors and gene-environment interactions. Additional questions remain on the relevant time window, duration, and level of environmental exposures in relation to PD risk. Furthermore, it is

Modelling the effectiveness of Integrated Pest Management strategies for the control of Septoria tritici blotch.

Reducing reliance on pesticides is an important global challenge. With increasing constraints on their use, in recent years there has been a declining trend in pesticide use for arable crops in the UK. But with increasing disease pressures and global demand for food, there is a greater need for effective measures of pest and disease control. These circumstances highlight the need for widespread adoption of sustainable alternative control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is one such solution, comprising a set of management strategies which focus on the long-term prevention, detection

Tsetse-Wolbachia symbiosis: comes of age and has great potential for pest and disease control.

Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are the sole vectors of African trypanosomes, the causative agent of sleeping sickness in human and nagana in animals. Like most eukaryotic organisms, Glossina species have established symbiotic associations with bacteria. Three main symbiotic bacteria have been found in tsetse flies: Wigglesworthia glossinidia, an obligate symbiotic bacterium, the secondary endosymbiont Sodalis glossinidius and the reproductive symbiont Wolbachia pipientis. In the present review, we discuss recent studies on the detection and characterization of Wolbachia infections in Glos

How Residual Fertility Impacts the Efficiency of Crop Pest Control by the Sterile Insect Technique.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a biological control technique based on mass-rearing, radiation-based sterilization that can induce fitness costs, and releases of the pest species targeted for population control. Sterile matings, between females and sterilized males, can reduce the overall population growth rate and cause a fall in population density. However, a proportion of irradiated males may escape sterilization, resulting in what is called residual fertility. Our aim in this study was to examine the impact of residual fertility on pest control employing a modeling approach. We mode

Reproductive characteristics of feral raccoons (Procyon lotor) captured by the pest control in Kamakura, Japan.

In order to examine reproductive characteristics of feral raccoons in Kamakura, 335 raccoons were collected from March 2005 to March 2007. Raccoons were classified into five age classes: Class I, less than 5 months old; Class II, 5-11 months; Class III, 12-17 months; Class IV, 18-23 months; and Class V, over 23 months old. Females were examined for their age specific pregnancy rate and litter size. To determine when raccoon births occur in the region, birth months of fetuses were estimated by the fetal growth rate, and birth months of Class I individuals were examined by tooth eruption. From f

Enabling technologies to improve area-wide integrated pest management programmes for the control of screwworms.

The economic devastation caused in the past by the New World screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to the livestock industry in the U.S.A., Mexico and the rest of Central America was staggering. The eradication of this major livestock pest from North and Central America using the sterile insect technique (SIT) as part of an area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) programme was a phenomenal technical and managerial accomplishment with enormous economic implications. The area is maintained screwworm-free by the weekly release of 40 million sterile flies

The effect of pest control on the incidence of trichinosis in Virovitica-Podravina County, Croatia.

The aim of the study was to assess the role of pest control as a preventive measure in the control of trichinosis. The investigation was designed as a retrospective cohort study in the Virovitica-Podravina County. The incidence of trichinosis was determined according to the presence or absence of exposure to protective pest control measures. Differences in the rate of trichinosis infection were determined by calculating relative risk (RR), i.e., the ratio of absolute risk in the two groups. In this epidemiological study, data collected in the County area regularly covered by pest control (expo

Evaluation of cocoa- and coffee-derived methylxanthines as toxicants for the control of pest coyotes.

Methylxanthines were quantified in coffee, tea, and chocolate products. Tarajuilie tea from India, cocoa powder, and cocoa nibs contained the highest levels of methylxanthines. Theobromine, caffeine, and theophylline combined in the ratios observed in tea and chocolate were ingested by coyotes. Although both mixtures induced acute toxicity, the symptoms accompanying the chocolate methylxanthine mimic were preferable. Manipulation of the ratios of methylxanthines in the chocolate mimic led to the identification of a 5:1 theobromine/caffeine mixture as a promising coyote toxicant. This mixture w

Complementarity between Orius predators improves control of foliar and flower pests.

BACKGROUND: Multispecies natural enemy assemblages may be more successful in suppressing herbivorous pests compared to low-diversity communities, especially when natural enemies complement each other regarding the niches they exploit. Orius predatory bugs are omnivorous biological control agents used in horticulture, and are widely associated with the control of flower thrips. However, species within the Orius genus may differ significantly in biological characteristics, such as size, thermal development requirements, induction of diapause, degree of omnivory, and within-plant distribution.
