Ancient treatment for lice: a source of suggestions for carriers of other infectious diseases?

Louse infestation is one of the oldest contagious pestilential diseases of humankind, which has recently re-emerged in several developing countries as well as in homeless individuals and migrants. The present work provides the first phase of an historical excursus of louse remedies based on the classics of pharmaceutical literature, codes, pharmacopoeia and treatises. The second phase involves a literature search, based on the principal medical databases (SciFinder, Pubmed, Google Scholar, ISI-Web of Science and Scopus), to match ancient raw materials and active principles for the treatment of

ThermoMicrowave-sonication improves the stability and digestive bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds in parsley juice.

UNLABELLED: These are indications of the effects of ThermoMicrowave Sonication (TMS) on the bioactive compounds of parsley (Petroselinum crispum) juice and their bioaccessibility during in vitro digestion. Total phenolic content (TPC), iron-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), chlorophyll, and ascorbic acid levels were measured in TMS-treated and pasteurized samples. TMS minimized the loss of heat-sensitive proteins and significantly increased the phenolic content and antioxidant structure (p < 0.05). By following simulated oral, gastric, and intestinal digestion, TPC, chlorophyll, and FRAP leve

Mosquito Larvicidal Activity and Cytotoxicity of the Extracts of Aromatic Plants from Malaysia.

Despite ongoing control efforts, the mosquito population and diseases vectored by them continue to thrive worldwide, causing major health concerns. There has been growing interest in the use of botanicals as alternatives to insecticides due to their widespread insecticidal properties, biodegradability, and adaptability to ecological conditions. In this study, we investigated the larvicidal activity and cytotoxicity effects of solvent extracts from three aromatic plants-Curcuma longa (turmeric), Ocimum americanum (hoary basil), and Petroselinum crispum (parsley)-against Aedes albopictus. Subseq

Genetic Determinants of Antagonistic Interactions and the Response of New Endophytic Strain Serratia quinivorans KP32 to Fungal Phytopathogens.

Fungal phytopathogens are challenging to control due to their penetration into plant tissues. Therefore, plant-colonizing bacteria could serve as an excellent weapon in fighting fungal infections. In this study, we aim to determine the biocontrol potential of the new endophytic strain Serratia quinivorans KP32, isolated from the roots of Petroselinum crispum L.; identify the related mechanisms; and understand the basis of its antagonistic interaction with taxonomically diverse fungi at the molecular level. The KP32 strain presented biological activity against Rhizoctonia solani, Colletotrichum

Susceptibility of Cooking Herbs to Stored-Product Moths.

Although herbs can contain several secondary metabolites potentially harmful to insects, dried herbs, like all stored foods, can be damaged by various insect pests. These pests have the potential to diminish both the quantity and the quality of food, and the consequences of infestation often only become noticeable once the pest has already become established. This study investigates the ability of two Lepidoptera pests, one polyphagous, Plodia interpunctella, and one selective, Idaea inquinata, to complete the postembryonic development on eleven dried herbs commonly used in cooking: dill (Anet

Integrative metabolomics and chemometric analysis reveal metabolites associated with antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of celery, Coriander, and parsley against multidrug-resistant uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) uropathogenic Escherichia coli and the increasing prevalence of biofilm-associated infections have created an urgent need for new antimicrobial strategies. Celery (Apium graveolens L.), coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), and parsley (Petroselinum crispum) are widely consumed herbs with reported medicinal properties; however, the relationship between their metabolite composition and antimicrobial potential remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated whether differences in the metabolite profiles of these Apiaceae herbs are as

Concurrent outbreaks of Shigella sonnei and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infections associated with parsley: implications for surveillance and control of foodborne illness.

In recent years, the globalization of the food supply and the development of extensive food distribution networks have increased the risk of foodborne disease outbreaks involving multiple states or countries. In particular, outbreaks associated with fresh produce have emerged as an important public health concern. During July and August 1998, eight restaurant-associated outbreaks of shigellosis caused by a common strain of Shigella sonnei occurred in the United States and Canada. The outbreak strain was characterized by unique pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns. Epidemiologic investigat

Development of a bacterial mixed culture preventing bacterial storage diseases of root vegetables.

The storage of root vegetables is a critical aspect of agricultural production, significantly impacting both the quality and quantity of produce available for consumption. This study aimed to develop a bacterial consortium capable of preventing storage bacterial diseases in root vegetables. A total of 225 bacterial strains were isolated from various ecological niches, including crops, peri-root soils, coastal dune soils, sewage sludge, and symbiotic bacteria of common insect pests. These strains were characterized for their ability to grow at storage temperatures (4 °C) and produce cellulase,

Use of Cheminformatics to Determine Potential Drug Interactions between Popular Barbadian Botanical Medicines and Antihypertensive Drugs.

Barbados has a rich traditional use of medicinal plants, especially among the older population who may have a chronic noncommunicable disease. This study aims to identify possible drug-herb interactions between popular herbal remedies used to manage elevated blood pressure and conventional antihypertensive drugs. In this study, in silico molecular docking experiments with AutoDock Vina (Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA), a part of Yasara Structure software, version 20.12.24, were used to screen 30 potential phytochemicals for drug interactions from 11 popular plants in Barbados that ar

A metagenomic assessment of viral contamination on fresh parsley plants irrigated with fecally tainted river water.

Microbial food-borne diseases are still frequently reported despite the implementation of microbial quality legislation to improve food safety. Among all the microbial agents, viruses are the most important causative agents of food-borne outbreaks. The development and application of a new generation of sequencing techniques to test for viral contaminants in fresh produce is an unexplored field that allows for the study of the viral populations that might be transmitted by the fecal-oral route through the consumption of contaminated food. To advance this promising field, parsley was planted and

The mechanism underlying the laxative properties of parsley extract.

Parsley has been claimed in folk medicine to possess laxative properties attributed to the presence therein of some volatile oils that are more concentrated in seeds than in stems or leaves. The advocated physiological effect of parsley, does not have, however, any proven scientific background and relies mainly on simple observations and empirical information. This work aims at providing the scientific evidence that would confirm or reject the claimed laxative role of parsley, and at determining its mechanism of action if present. A perfusion technique was used to measure the net fluid absorpt

Apiole, an important constituent of parsley, is a mixed-type inhibitor of the CYP1A subfamily.

Apiole (1-allyl-2,5-dimethoxy-3,4-methylenedioxybenzene) and parsley leaves ethanolic extract containing it inhibit the rat liver microsomal ethoxy- and methoxyresorufin-O-deacetylase activities associated with cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A1 and 1A2, respectively. Cytochrome P4501A subfamily metabolizes environmental mutagens and several drugs, leading to the formation of mutagenic metabolites. Docking analysis showed that residue Phe123 within the active site of the CYP1A1 enzyme is bound to apiole through a π/π stacking of its benzene ring. In the case of 1A2, its Phe226 interacts with the dioxol

Effect of green tea on volatile sulfur compounds in mouth air.

Many food products are claimed to be effective in controlling halitosis. Halitosis is caused mainly by volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) such as H(2)S and CH(3)SH produced in the oral cavity. Oral microorganisms degrade proteinaceous substrates to cysteine and methionine, which are then converted to VSCs. Most treatments for halitosis focus on controlling the number of microorganisms in the oral cavity. Since tea polyphenols have been shown to have antimicrobial and deodorant effects, we have investigated whether green tea powder reduces VSCs in mouth air, and compared its effectiveness with th

Glycine betaine improves Listeria monocytogenes tolerance to desiccation on parsley leaves independent of the osmolyte transporters BetL, Gbu and OpuC.

AIMS: To investigate the effect of glycine betaine (GB) on the survival of Listeria monocytogenes on leaf surfaces under low relative humidity (RH). METHODS AND RESULTS: The addition of GB (> or = 25 mmol l(-1)) improved the survival of L. monocytogenes under low RH on parsley leaves, thus suggesting that GB can improve the tolerance of L. monocytogenes to desiccation. Ten times less GB was needed to improve L. monocytogenes survival under low RH on nonbiological surfaces compared with parsley leaves, suggesting that, on the leaf surface, L. monocytogenes may have to compete for the available

Exotic food allergy: anaphylactic reaction to lychee.

There are very few reports on allergic reactions to lychee fruit in the literature. We describe the case of a 26-year-old man who developed pruritus, generalized urticaria, and severe angioedema of his lips and tongue with dyspnea within 15 minutes after lychee fruit intake. Although we found no lychee-specific immunoglobulin E antibodies, a basophil activation test (BAT) and a cellular antigen stimulation test (CAST) to lychee were both positive, as was a prick-to-prick test with fresh lychee fruit. The patient also suffered from an oral food allergy syndrome to parsley and was sensitized to
