A case of benign, cystic intrapulmonary teratoma occurring in the right lobe of a 22-year old female is described with grossly and microscopically findings. The connection between the tumor and the segmental bronchus, together with the absence of germ cell neoplasms in other locations, clearly established the true intrapulmonary nature of the lesion. The unusual finding of thymic tissue within the wall supports the possible origin from the third pharyngeal pouch.

Seropositive patients quite often demonstrate symptoms in the area of the head and neck, among which should be mentioned opportunistic infections, neoplasms--Kaposi's sarcoma, as well as progressive generalized lymphadenopathy. These patients quite often complain about difficulties in breathing through the nose as well as of recrudescent auricular inflammation. The authors present descriptions of a great pharyngeal and palatal tonsillar hypertrophy in a twenty-one-year-old patient infected with HIV virus.

The efficacy and safety of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for superficial cancer of the pharynx are still unclear. To identify clinicopathological features of superficial pharyngeal cancer, and the efficacy and safety of ESD, we retrospectively assessed 70 pharyngeal cancers in 59 patients who underwent ESD. Of these patients, 61.0% and 50.8% had a history of esophageal cancer and head and neck cancer, respectively. The median tumor size was 15 mm, and 75.7% of the lesions were located at the piriform sinus. The en bloc resection rate was 94.9%. Treatment-related adverse events occurre

The aim of this prospective study was to compare the diagnostic value of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of tumors of the nasopharynx, oropharynx and hypopharynx. For this reason, we performed CT and MRI in a total of 473 patients with neoplasms of the nasopharynx [116], oropharynx [282] and hypopharynx [39]. Furthermore, the MR imaging protocol had to be optimized including 2D and 3D gradient echo sequences. We compared the use of conventional and fast spin echo and 3D gradient echo sequences for the evaluation of tumors of the nasopharynx and t

History taking is the first step in the evaluation of a patient. An analysis of the information obtained provides the basis for the choice and order of diagnostic tests. In addition, it provides the clinician with the necessary information to determine the relevance of "abnormal tests" to the patient's problem. Dysphagia is a reliable symptom that indicates an abnormality in the swallowing mechanism. The history should contain a detailed description of the symptoms associated with dysphagia from the onset. Especially relevant are questions to determine if dysphagia is experienced every day or

Eighty-nine primary malignant neoplasms of the oral and oro-pharyngeal tissues excluding bone and salivary gland tissue were studied over a period of 21 years. They constituted 0.4% of the total number of neoplasms seen at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, over that period and contribute only a small proportion, in contrast to the widely held view that oral tumours are very common in Africa. Squamous cell carcinoma was the commonest type of lesion seen and the commonly affected sites were palate, gum (gingiva), tongue, lip and floor of mouth, in that order. The incidental overall male:f

Ectopic internal carotid artery (ICA) is a very rare variation. The major congenital abnormalities of the ICA can be classified as agenesis, aplasia and hypoplasia, and they can be unilateral or bilateral. Anomalies of the neck artery may be vascular neoplasms or ectopic position. Carotid angiograms provide absolute confirmation of an aberrant carotid artery, while EcoColorDoppler (ECD) gives also important information about the evaluation of carotid vassels. Nevertheless Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the neck provide spatial information about the adjacent ph

Monoclonal plasma cells form the solitary neoplasm known as solitary plasmacytoma. Isolated extramedullary plasmacytoma is less common than solitary bone plasmacytoma. An elderly male presented with coughing blood and was diagnosed with pharyngeal plasmacytoma with synchronous multiple myeloma. Herein, we present this challengingly rare case to increase awareness of this unusual entity.

CASE REPORT: We present a case of metastatic larynx cancer in the cavernous sinus. It presented itself as a right sixth cranial nerve palsy which progressed into a painful ophthalmoplegia with normal CT and RNM in its early stages.
DISCUSSION: We must suspect a cavernous sinus invasion in patients with cranial nerve palsies and with a history of malignancy, despite negative radiologic findings. Tumoral invasion of the skull base has been described in pharyngeal neoplasms but it is exceptional in larynx carcinomas.

Four cases of nasopharyngeal craniopharyngiomas have been previously reported in the medical literature. They were, in fact, only nasopharyngeal extensions of tumors originating in the anterior pituitary of the sella turcica. Pituitary adenomas can arise from any part of the craniopharyngeal canal. Supporting this theory are four reported cases of pituitary adenomas in the body of the sphenoid bone separate from both the sella turcica and the nasopharynx. The discovery by Erdheim in 1904 of the pharyngeal hypophysis located on the posterior edge of the vomerine bone raises the possibility of a

Although interpatient variations in the course and anatomy of extracranial internal carotid arteries (EICAs) have been described previously, intrapatient variability is rarely cited in the literature. Distance between EICAs and the pharyngeal wall is an important determinant of vascular injury risk. A retropharyngeal EICA has crucial implications in patients undergoing pharyngeal procedures, and important in otorhinolaryngology and emergency medicine. Surgical exploration without identification of anatomical landmarks, or emergent intubation in the emergency room poses high risk for EICA injur

A number of co-aggregations of cancers at different sites has been reported, including recognized syndromes (e.g., Li-Fraumeni), and aggregations between cancers at breast, stomach and ovary, between cancers at prostate, urinary tract and other sites, as well as between several tobacco-related neoplasms. In a network of case-control studies from Italy and Switzerland, including more than 12,000 cases of 13 different cancers, after controlling for multiple testing, significant associations emerged between oral and pharyngeal cancer and family history of laryngeal cancer (relative risk (RR): 3.3

Immune system deficiencies, particularly cell-mediated immunity are the main events of HIV infection. The resulting syndrome is removies: AIDS. This immune deficiency encourages neoplasms such as the Kaposi sarcoma and non Hodgkin lymphoma, above all, it explains the reason why infections supported by opportunist germs, normally not pathogenic for immuno-competent people, are the main reason for morbidity and mortality in this kind of patients. Since among mycotic infections, the main one in these patients is candidiasis, particularly oro-pharyngeal candidiasis, we have carried out a research

This is a case of a male child who presented with a progressively enlarging oropharyngeal mass, hyponasal voice, and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. Computed tomography imaging of the head and neck revealed a well-circumscribed low-density area of polypoid morphology arising from the left lateral pharyngeal wall, filling most of the posterior oropharynx and extending to a pedicle at the lateral nasopharynx. Histopathological evaluation following surgical excision revealed Antoni A tissue and S100 immunoreactivity. The presentation and diagnosis of benign schwannoma neoplasms are discussed

Although squamous cell carcinoma accounts for the overwhelming majority of head and neck malignant neoplasms, extranodal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) of the pharyngeal region can have a similar clinical presentation. The histopathological features of this rare entity have been described and emphasised in the literature. We present the case of a 65-year-old male patient with FDCS of the tonsil to illustrate the radiologic findings of FDCS and also highlight this infrequent but salient differential diagnosis for adult head and neck neoplasia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the use of narrow-band imaging, comprehensive endoscopic evaluation of the laryngopharynx in the endoscopy suite remains challenging because of its complex anatomical structure, limited working space, and reactions such as gagging and coughing. Consequently, minute synchronous neoplasms may occasionally be overlooked during the initial endoscopic assessment. We hypothesized that argon-plasma coagulation (APC) could serve as a minimally invasive treatment for minute synchronous neoplasms of the head and neck detected during endoscopic laryngopharyngeal surgery combined wit

Systemic changes often send signals to the skin, and certain neoplastic diseases of the internal organs can also trigger skin manifestations. In this article, the authors make clinical photography presentations of the patients seen at our clinic with dermatologic paraneoplastic syndromes within pharyngeal-esophageal malignancies, describe several paraneoplastic dermatoses, and also review high-quality scientific literature in order to be able to highlight the dermatological signs of pharyngoesophageal malignant tumors. The majority of our patients with paraneoplastic dermatoses, filtering for

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm, which generally arises from the pleura. There have been documented a number of extrapleural origins including the head and neck in the literature. It is emphasized to make a diagnosis in a rare location such as the retropharyngeal space. We present a case of a 54-year-old man diagnosed with giant solitary retropharyngeal SFT. Clinical symptoms were pharyngeal foreign body sensation and dysphagia associated with dyspnea. Physical examination showed a sizable submucosal mass under the posterior pharyngeal wall, which partially ob

Adult rhabdomyomas of the head and neck are uncommon benign skeletal muscle tumors. Only a few cases occurring in the pharyngeal wall have been described in the world literature. We present a case of recurrent bilateral rhabdomyomas in the pharynx and discuss the clinicopathological features of this lesion, comparing it to those of other neoplasms from which it must be differentiated. To our knowledge, bilaterality of this type of lesion has not been described previously. Although adult rhabdomyomas have a distinct histology, they often are mistaken for a variety of other lesions, particularly
