RNA phase transitions in repeat expansion disorders.

Expansions of short nucleotide repeats produce several neurological and neuromuscular disorders including Huntington disease, muscular dystrophy, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A common pathological feature of these diseases is the accumulation of the repeat-containing transcripts into aberrant foci in the nucleus. RNA foci, as well as the disease symptoms, only manifest above a critical number of nucleotide repeats, but the molecular mechanism governing foci formation above this characteristic threshold remains unresolved. Here we show that repeat expansions create templates for multivale

Exploring structural phase transitions of ion crystals.

Phase transitions have been a research focus in many-body physics over past decades. Cold ions, under strong Coulomb repulsion, provide a repealing paradigm of exploring phase transitions in stable confinement by electromagnetic field. We demonstrate various conformations of up to sixteen laser-cooled (40)Ca(+) ion crystals in a home-built surface-electrode trap, where besides the usually mentioned structural phase transition from the linear to the zigzag, two additional phase transitions to more complicated two-dimensional configurations are identified. The experimental observation agrees wel

The problem of processes and transitions: are diseases phase kinds?

In this paper I discuss a central objection against diseases being natural kinds-namely, that diseases are processes or transitions and hence they should not be conceptualized in the 'substantish' framework of natural kinds. I indicate that the objection hinges on conceiving disease kinds as phase kinds, in contrast to the non-phase, natural kinds of the exact sciences. I focus on somatic diseases and argue, via a representative comparison, that if disease kinds are phase kinds, then exact science kinds are phase kinds as well. On the other hand, if exact science kinds are non-phase kinds, the

Phase transitions in the assembly of multivalent signalling proteins.

Cells are organized on length scales ranging from ångström to micrometres. However, the mechanisms by which ångström-scale molecular properties are translated to micrometre-scale macroscopic properties are not well understood. Here we show that interactions between diverse synthetic, multivalent macromolecules (including multi-domain proteins and RNA) produce sharp liquid-liquid-demixing phase separations, generating micrometre-sized liquid droplets in aqueous solution. This macroscopic transition corresponds to a molecular transition between small complexes and large, dynamic supramolecular p

Phase transitions in calcium nitrate thin films.

Calcium carbonate is a ubiquitous mineral and its reactivity with indoor and outdoor air pollutants will contribute to the deterioration of these materials through the formation of salts that deliquesce at low relative humidity (RH). As shown here for calcium nitrate thin films, deliquescence occurs at even lower relative humidity than expected from bulk thermodynamics and lower than the recommended humidity for the preservation of artifacts and antiques.

Unified High-Pressure Phase-Transition Sequence in the f-Electron Metals: oF16→oF8 Transition in Terbium.

The lanthanide elements have long been reported as having a common series of structural phase transitions on compression, but recent diffraction studies have revealed two series of transitions: one in the low-Z lanthanides (Nd and Sm) involving an 8-atom orthorhombic structure (oF8), also seen in some actinide elements, and another in the high-Z lanthanides (Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) involving an isosymmetric 16-atom structure (oF16), unique to the lanthanides. No element has yet been found to exhibit both structures. We have followed the structural evolution of Tb to 308 GPa and find that oF16-Tb t

Biomolecular coacervation-mediated materials: Phase states, phase transitions, and biomedical applications.

Biomolecular coacervation is increasingly recognized as a phase-evolution process, including liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS), resulting in metastable liquid-like states, and phase transitions that give rise to gel-like states or solid-like states. These coacervate phase states exhibit distinct structural, dynamic and mechanical characteristics, making biomolecular coacervation regulation a powerful design strategy to engineer biomaterials for a broad range of biomedical applications. In this review, we first summarize the classification of LLPS and the typical molecular driving forces. W

Bio-Inspired Phase-Transition Logic Gates for Autonomous Thermal Management.

Conventional thermal management strategies rely predominantly on passive heat dissipation or open-loop external control, struggling to address the transient and heterogeneous thermal loads of modern micro/nanodevices. Inspired by the sense-perceive-act closed-loop feedback of biological perspiration, we propose an autonomous thermal management strategy that encodes a first-order solid-liquid phase transition as a molecular logic gate. Within this phase-change-gated polymer network (Perspire X), the melting of polyethylene glycol (PEG) acts as a physical threshold. Surpassing this critical temp

Activating Phase-Transition Toughening in van der Waals Semiconductor GaTe.

Inorganic semiconductors are essential for modern electronics, but their inherent brittleness restricts their applications in flexible and wearable devices. This issue is particularly acute in low-symmetry structures, where the lack of slip systems further suppresses plastic deformation. Here, we reveal an intrinsic toughening mechanism in monoclinic GaTe using in situ SEM microfracture experiments. In contrast to the catastrophic brittle cleavage along the interlayer direction, cross-layer crack propagation undergoes continuous deflection, generating a highly tortuous crack path that enhances

Chirality reversal quantum phase transition in flat-band topological insulators.

Quantum anomalous Hall effect generates dissipationless chiral conductive edge states in materials with large spin-orbit coupling and strong, intrinsic, or proximity magnetisation. The topological indexes of the energy bands are robust to smooth variations in the relevant parameters. Topological quantum phase transitions between states with different Chern numbers require the closing of the bulk bandgap:|C|=1→C=1/2corresponds to the transition from a topological insulator to a gapless state ink=0- quantum anomalous semimetal. Strain-Assisted Phase Transformation in Two-Dimensional Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides.

Two-dimensional polymorphic transition-metal dichalcogenides have drawn attention for their diverse applications. This work explores the complex interplay between strain-induced phase transformation and crack growth behavior in annealed nanocrystalline MoS2. Employing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, this research focuses on the effect of grain size, misorientation, and annealing on phase evolution and their effects on the mechanical behavior of MoS2. First, examining phase transformation in monocrystalline MoS2 under various stress states reveals distinct behaviors depending on the initia

Quantum Phase Transition in Magnetic Nanographenes on a Lead Superconductor.

Quantum spins, also known as spin operators that preserve SU(2) symmetry, lack a specific orientation in space and are hypothesized to display unique interactions with superconductivity. However, spin-orbit coupling and crystal field typically cause a significant magnetic anisotropy in d/f shell spins on surfaces. Here, we fabricate atomically precise S = 1/2 magnetic nanographenes on Pb(111) through engineering sublattice imbalance in the graphene honeycomb lattice. Through tuning the magnetic exchange strength between the unpaired spin and Cooper pairs, a quantum phase transition from the si

First-order like phase transition induced by quenched coupling disorder.

We investigate the collective dynamics of a population of X Y model-type oscillators, globally coupled via non-separable interactions that are randomly chosen from a positive or negative value and subject to thermal noise controlled by temperature T. We find that the system at T = 0 exhibits a discontinuous, first-order like phase transition from the incoherent to the fully coherent state; when thermal noise is present ( T > 0 ), the transition from incoherence to the partial coherence is continuous and the critical threshold is now larger compared to the deterministic case ( T = 0 ). We deriv

Cdc2-cyclin E complexes regulate the G1/S phase transition.

The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p27(Kip1) is known as a negative regulator of cell-cycle progression and as a tumour suppressor. Cdk2 is the main target of p27 (refs 2, 3) and therefore we hypothesized that loss of Cdk2 activity should modify the p27(-/-) mouse phenotype. Here, we show that although p27(-/-) Cdk2(-/-) mice developed ovary tumours and tumours in the anterior lobe of the pituitary, we failed to detect any functional complementation in p27(-/-) Cdk2(-/-) double-knockout mice, indicating a parallel pathway regulated by p27. We observed elevated levels of S phase and mitosis

Neural correlates of the spontaneous phase transition during bimanual coordination.

Repetitive bimanual finger-tapping movements tend toward mirror symmetry: There is a spontaneous transition from less stable asymmetrical movement patterns to more stable symmetrical ones under frequency stress but not vice versa. During this phase transition, the interaction between the signals controlling each hand (cross talk) is expected to be prominent. To depict the regions of the brain in which cortical cross talk occurs during bimanual coordination, we conducted event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging using a bimanual repetitive-tapping task. Transition-related activity was

Surface-Charge-Regulated Porous Water for Interfacial Phase-Transition Control.

Angstrom-confined water in porous scaffolds is sensitive to interfacial electrostatics, yet cross-material predictability is limited because pore geometry and surface chemistry change simultaneously. This work introduces Surface-Charge-Regulated Porous Water (SCR-PW) as a tunable functional microenvironment where framework charge serves as a deterministic parameter to modulate hydration under fixed topology. By utilizing MFI-type ZSM-5 zeolites (∼5.5 Å), a continuous gradient of negative framework charge is established by systematically narrowing the Si/Al ratio. This intensified interfacial e

Slip-Driven B1-B2 Phase Transition in Shock-Compressed KCl.

The mechanisms, pathways, and driving force for the classical B1-B2 transitions have long been elusive. Here, we conduct ultrafast x-ray diffraction measurements and systematic atomistic simulations of single-crystal KCl under shock compression and establish a unified model for the B1-B2 transition in KCl. The transition proceeds via resolved-shear-stress-driven slip through two generalized transition pathways, yielding two generalized B1-B2 orientation relationships. Resolved-shear-stress-driven slip is potentially a common mechanism for general B1-B2 transitions.

Cellular modifiers of TDP-43 phase transition and cytoplasmic aggregation.

RNA-binding protein TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) can form liquid-like nuclear assemblies whose phase behavior is thought to influence its aggregation propensity and neurotoxic activity. The mechanisms that govern the liquid-to-solid phase transition of TDP-43 remain poorly defined. Here, we combined chemical and genome-wide genetic screens to identify cellular factors that modulate the phase behavior of an RNA-binding-defective TDP-43 mutant. Our screens uncovered multiple cellular processes, including RNA splicing, protein translation, proteostasis imbalance, and nuclear export as TDP-

Strain-induced topological phase transition in ferromagnetic Janus monolayer MnSbBiS2Te2.

We investigate a strain-induced topological phase transition in the ferromagnetic Janus monolayer MnSbBiS2Te2 using first-principles calculations. The electronic, magnetic, and topological properties are studied under biaxial strain within the range of -8 to +8%. The ground state of monolayer MnSbBiS2Te2 is metallic with an out-of-plane magnetic easy axis. A band gap is opened when a compressive strain between -4% and -7% is applied. We observe a topological phase transition at a biaxial strain of -5%, where the material becomes a Chern insulator exhibiting a quantum anomalous hall (QAH) effec

Drosophila immune cells transport oxygen through PPO2 protein phase transition.

Insect respiration has long been thought to be solely dependent on an elaborate tracheal system without assistance from the circulatory system or immune cells1,2. Here we describe that Drosophila crystal cells-myeloid-like immune cells called haemocytes-control respiration by oxygenating Prophenoloxidase 2 (PPO2) proteins. Crystal cells direct the movement of haemocytes between the trachea of the larval body wall and the circulation to collect oxygen. Aided by copper and a neutral pH, oxygen is trapped in the crystalline structures of PPO2 in crystal cells. Conversely, PPO2 crystals can be dis
