This paper outlines the findings and discussion of a qualitative research study that focused on the experiences of seven qualified nurses working in three Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments in the North West of England. It was exploratory in nature, aiming to describe and explain the nurses' encounters with adolescents accessing emergency contraception (EC) in A&E. The study was carried out using a feminist methodology and a grounded theory method. The findings indicated that accident and emergency is a contradictory location for access to EC for adolescents, where the 'promise' of easy,

The purpose of this paper is to examine the concept of Schadenfreude--the pleasure felt at another's misfortune--and to argue that feeling it in the course of health care work, as elsewhere, is evidence of a deficient character. In order to show that Schadenfreude is an objectionable emotion in health care work, I first offer some conceptual remarks about emotions generally and their differential treatment in Kantian and Aristotelian thought. Second, I argue that an appreciation of the rationality of the emotions is crucial to our self-understanding as persons in general and nurses in particul

This paper proposes that some practices and trends in mental health care may be considered as defensive responses to collective anxiety and fear. On a larger scale similar dynamics occur around fear of terrorism. Collectively and individually we are pulled by the defensive forces and dynamics associated with anxiety. This can in part explain the polarization that occurs around issues of definition and response to mental illness. Fear and anxiety push services towards simplistic viewpoints and futile practices. The capacity to view things from the perspective of others, embracing explanatory an

Current Canadian helmet bylaws focus mainly on bicycle helmet use. In this way, law makers are ignoring head injuries associated with other wheeled sports. Cycling, in-line skating, skateboarding, and scootering can all cause serious injury to participants if proper protective gear is not worn. Legislation has been shown to work in promoting helmet use and decreasing injuries. Nurses, using theory and research to guide practice, can be key players in advocating for healthy public policies and amendments to provincial legislation. Nurses have the opportunity to play an active leadership role th

The emerging new multidisciplinary and crosscultural field of bioethics will require sensitive, open-minded professionals to take the lead in hospital ethics, in genetic counselling, and in the teaching of bioethics to students in nursing, medicine and the basic sciences. Nurses with ward experience who return to university to gain an MA or PhD in bioethics are eminently suited for this leadership role, for they may be more likely than physicians to study for a liberal education to supplement their professional knowledge; their first-hand experience in nursing is an antidote to the pointless s

The trauma-writings of World War I nurses have been identified as an important and influential corpus of early 20th-century works. Not only did the rediscovery of these writings in the later 20th century serve to recognize the importance of women's writings as part of the historical record, and identify certain female writers as some of the most important thinkers of the modernist movement; they also demonstrated the importance of the nursing perspective as one element of wartime experience. This paper considers a number of influential works written by both nurses and members of the Voluntary

Genomic advances are rapidly transforming the understanding of health and illness, making it essential for the nursing workforce and faculty to be equipped to teach and deliver genomic-informed care. The Translation and Integration of Genomics is Essential to Doctoral NuRsing (TIGER) program, supported by the National Human Genome Research Institute, utilizes a "train-the-trainer" model to prepare doctoral nurse educators to integrate genomic content into nursing curricula, practice, and research. The TIGER program aims to build capacity among doctoral-prepared nursing faculty to champion geno

OBJECTIVE: To explore labor and delivery nurses' views of intrapartum care, particularly factors that help or hinder their efforts to provide professional labor support.
DESIGN: Content analysis of narrative comments that nurses wrote on questionnaires during a two-part research study on professional labor support in 2001.
PARTICIPANTS: Intrapartum registered nurses.
RESULTS: Six themes emerged under the category of factors that hinder nurses' intrapartum care: (a) hastening, controlling, and mechanizing birth; (b) facility culture and resources; (c) mothers' knowledge, language, and medica

Vulnerability is widely invoked in healthcare, bioethics, and nursing, yet it remains poorly defined because universal human susceptibility, situational exposure to harm, and clinical frailty are frequently treated as interchangeable. This conceptual ambiguity is particularly significant following a fall, when older adults may be understood predominantly through physical risk, functional decline, and the need for protection. Through an interpretative analysis drawing on nursing philosophy, feminist bioethics, phenomenological accounts of embodiment, and nursing ethics, this paper critically ex

Unsafe staffing, bullying and incivility, and burnout and compassion fatigue are examples of three chronic and pervasive problems that nurses face. At their roots, they involve issues associated with emotional intelligence and communication-related skills, also known as "soft" skills. For nurses to be effective and positive change agents in addressing these and other challenging problems, they must be proficient in such skills and competencies. This article examines the importance of soft skills in addressing key professional and practice-related challenges, and discusses strategies for develo

AIM: To increase understanding and describe nurse leaders' experiences of challenging times in nurse leadership in clinical nursing context.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative, explorative-descriptive phenomenological approach design with inductive elements. The data material consists of semi-structured in-depth interviews with six experienced Norwegian nurse leaders from a somatic healthcare context. The interview texts phenomenological reading act and interpretation are inspired by Husserl's philosophy and Colaizzi's data analysis.

BACKGROUND: The increasing participation of older people in the global labor force has made their health and quality of life a significant public health concern. Integrative nursing theory, based on the philosophy of holistic healthcare, provides a multidimensional theoretical and practical framework to improve individuals' health and quality of life. This study aimed to map the existing literature addressing the health and quality of life of older people in the workforce based on integrative nursing principles.
METHODS: This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR and Arksey and O'Malley five

PROBLEM: Contemporary resources that identify the challenges and experiences of Midwifery and Nursing honours students and providers within Australia and New Zealand are lacking.

Globally, from America to Europe and beyond, the need for the expansion of the role of nurse practitioners has been recognized within the healthcare professions. However, little emphasis has been placed on assessing the views of clients, and within the addiction services, the voice of clients can be additionally marginalized as a result of treatment philosophies, stigma, and resource constraints. The aims of this study were to establish from clients their nursing needs and to use these findings alongside an objective measurement of clients' health, to inform the development of a nurse-led trea

This paper describes an unconventional health education project implemented by nurse practitioners in a nurse-managed clinic serving persons who are homeless. The nurse practitioners perceived that there were a number of potential barriers to providing health education to the homeless patients. These barriers included the fact that this patient population is part of a marginalized subculture affected by a variety of overwhelming social problems. An additional barrier was that the nurses often differed from their homeless patients in terms of race, gender, socioeconomic status, formal education

BACKGROUND: Nursing students' incivility experiences not only cause stress and burnout but also have other negative effects on general clinical training, hindering their learning or even affecting their career decisions.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to comprehensively and thoroughly examine the specific phenomena and implications of incivility experienced by nursing students during clinical practicum.
DESIGN: Based on the hermeneutical philosophy, this study utilizes an exploratory and qualitative design to describe the incivility experiences among nursing students undertaking clinical pract
