BACKGROUND: Microbes particularly bacteria presenting in the gut of haematophagous insects may have an important role in the epidemiology of human infectious disease.
METHODS: The microbial flora of gut and surrounding environmental of a laboratory strain of Phlebotomus papatasi, the main vector of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) in the old world, was investigated. Biochemical reactions and 16s rDNA sequencing of the isolated bacteria against 24 sugars and amino acids were used for bacteria species identification. Common mycological media used for fungi identification as well.

The breeding habitat of sandflies is a little studied and poorly understood phenomenon. More importantly, oviposition behaviour is a largely neglected aspect of sandfly biology and this knowledge gap further undermines our understanding of the biology of sandflies. Pheromones released by the eggs play an important role in identifying good sites for oviposition by female insects. Several recent studies have examined the oviposition pheromone. The present study provides a preliminary report on the oviposition behaviour of Phlebotomus argentipes, the only vector of kala-azar (or visceral leishman

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) play main role in the transmission of different forms of leishmaniasis in the world. Phlebotomus papatasi is the main vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) in Iran. There are several control measures for vector control using different classes of insecticides. The aim of this study was to breed the sandflies which were collected from a hyperendemic focus of the disease in central Iran in the laboratory condition and to determine its baseline susceptibility to commonly used insecticides.
METHODS: Sandflies were co

Phlebotomine sandflies of the subgenus Adlerius (Diptera: Psychodidae) includes 20 described species and two unnamed from Afghanistan. The female sandflies of this subgenus are considered as indistinguishable morphologically and their identification is based on the identification of associated males. Some species of Adlerius are suspected vectors of visceral leishmaniasis and at least one species has been implicated as a vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Four species of Adlerius have been recorded in Iran in the past: P. brevis Theodor and Mesghali, 1964, P. halepensis Theodor, 1948, P. longi

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)incorporated into an agar overlay containing DEAE-dextran enhanced plaque formation in Vero cells by Naples sandfly fever virus passaged in mouse brain or Vero cell cultures. No plaques were visible when DMSO was used without the DEAE-dextran, some plaques were rarely visible (less than 0.5mm) when DEAE-dextran was used without the DMSO, and up to 10-fold more plaques were clearly visible (0.5-1.5 mm) when both chemicals were used. The combined enhancing effect of DMSO and DEAE-dextran was also observed with mouse brain passaged, but not Vero passaged Sicilian sandfly

BACKGROUND: Haematophagous females of some phlebotomine sandflies are the only natural vectors of Leishmania species, the causative agents of leishmaniasis in many parts of the tropics and subtropics, including Iran. We report the presence of Phlebotomus (Larroussius) major and Phlebotomus (Adlerius) halepensis in Tonekabon (Mazanderan Province) and Phlebotomus (Larroussius) tobbi in Pakdasht (Tehran Province). It is the first report of these species, known as potential vectors of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis in Iran, are identified in these areas.
METHODS: In 2006-2007 individual wild-cau

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a public health concern caused by Leishmania (L.) major and L.tropica in Libya. Information on sandfly vectors, as well as their associated Leishmania species, is of paramount importance because vector dispersion is one of the major factors responsible for pathogen dissemination. A number of 515 sandflies (275 males and 240 females) were collected during June-November 2012 using the Centers for Disease Control miniature light traps from Al Rabta, northwest of Libya. Two hundred and forty unfed females were identified; Phlebotomus (Ph.) papatasi (N = 97), Ph. ser

Visceral leishmaniasis is a deadly parasitic disease that is transmitted via the bite of a female sand fly, Phlebotomus argentipes. The highest burden of this disease is in northern India. In 2005, India embarked on an initiative with Nepal, Bangladesh, and the World Health Organization to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis by 2015. With the goal of 1 case in 10,000 people still unmet, it is prudent to evaluate the tools that have been used thus far to reduce vector numbers and cases of the disease. Herein, we present a review of studies conducted on vector-control strategies in India to combat

In the Indian subcontinent visceral leishmaniasis, also known as kala-azar, is caused by the protozoa Leishmania donovani and is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected female sand flies Phlebotomus argentipes in an anthroponotic cycle. Sand fly saliva is known to play an important role in host infection outcome after an infective bite. Immunogenicity of P. argentipes saliva has already been described. However, specific antigens that can contribute to these immunogenic properties are unknown. This work focuses on the identification of antigens present in P. argentipes saliva through the

In the last edition of Morton's medical Bibliography (1991) the discovery of the transmission of old world cutaneous leishmaniasis by phlebotomes is attributed to english-speaking authors having published between 1924 and 1942. In fact this discovery resulting from researches undertaken since 1904 is due to the team of the Institut Pasteur d'Algerie (E. & E. SERGENT and collaborators) and was published in 1921. We further recall the two meetings of the Société de pathologie exotique held in Paris on february 8 & 9 1933 during which were exposed the results obtained in Palestine & Syria by ADLE

PURPOSE: The activity of Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli, a vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis, is known to be seasonal, but the information describing these patterns is sparse in time and space. The purpose of his paper is to conduct a meta-analysis to depict the seasonality of P. papatasi at the global scale.
METHODS: The current paper uses data from a collection of 1200 scientific papers, where 300 are about the vector and 36 include monthly data (of 61 sites) of the P. papatasi from 15 countries published from 1994 to 2017.
RESULTS: The activity peaked mainly in dry periods in all explored s

Transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania infantum was studied in South Anatolia, Turkey. Small, non-ulcerating lesions prevailed and patients were negative in rK39 tests for antibody detection for human visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The most abundant sand fly species, Phlebotomus tobbi, was found positive for Leishmania promastigotes with a prevalence of 1.4% (13 out of 898 dissected females). The isolated strains were identical with those obtained from patients with CL and were typed as L. infantum. Phylogenetic analysis revealed similarity to MON-188 and a clear diffe

Morphological variations were observed in Phlebotomus argentipes, the vector for visceral leishmaniasis reported from the endemic states of Bihar, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. The taxonomic features distinguishing vector and nonvector species of P. argentipes were relative length of ascoid and antennal segment IV. Three morphotypes were characterized as <0.4, = 0.4 and >0.4 respectively. Other characteristics of wing width, wing length, eye, style, antennal segment III, IV, V was found statistically significant (p<0.05) and eleven other morphological measurements were not significant. Exogenous and indigenous cases of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis are reported in several Egyptian Governorates particularly those in the Nile Delta, Phlebotomus paptasi (Scopoli) is the only proven insect vector. This paper was intended to study the seasonal abundance, nocturnal activity and breeding sites as well as other relevant behaviour aiming to throw some light on this insect vector. The results showed that: (a) the seasonal activity started in April and ended in November or beginning of December. (b) female outnumbered male indoors (7.4:1) and V.V. outdoors (0.14:1). Analyses of the virion polypeptides and genomes of several Phlebotomus fever group viruses, Karimabad, Punta Toro, Chagres, and the sandfly fever Sicilian serotype viruses, have established that they are biochemically similar to the accepted members of the Bunyaviridae family. Like snowshoe hare virus (a member of the California serogroup of the Bunyavirus genus of the Bunyaviridae family), Karimabad, Punta Toro, Chagres, and the sandfly fever Sicilian serotype viruses all have three viral RNA species, designated large (L), medium (M), and small (S). INTRODUCTION: The manipulation of the gut microbiota of disease vectors has emerged as a new approach to use in the integrated control of vector-borne diseases. For this purpose, a deep knowledge of their gut microbial communities is essential. To our knowledge, to date, no study has documented the gut microbiome dynamics of Phlebotomus duboscqi sand flies over the entire time-period required for the maturation of a Leishmania infection. Here, we address this limitation.
METHODS: P. duboscqi midguts were dissected both before and at different days after L. major infection and subjected to gen
