Incoordination of the phonation start in individuals with balbuties.

We studied the effect occurring in close proximity before the phonation start and give an account of the microdramas taking place upon the glottis immediately before the phonation start in a group of individuals suffering from balbuties (60 children and adolescents from 9 to 14 years of age) and an equally large control group suffering from no such speech defect. In the group of children and adolescents with balbuties only less than 4% of the cases showed undisturbed regular phonation starts, whereas in the control group it was almost as much as 90%.

Selective impairment of phonation: a case study.

A 47-year-old right-handed man underwent craniotomy for clipping of an aneurism at the trifurcation of the left middle cerebral artery. Subsequently, he suffered a left hemisphere CVA after which his speech and language resembled that of Broca's aphasia with accompanying apraxia of speech. Medical, behavioral, and acoustical data amassed over a period of several months indicated numerous contraindications to traditional diagnoses of Broca's aphasia, apraxia of speech, and dysarthria. Ultimately, it was determined that the patient had a selective impairement of phonation or laryngeal apraxia. T

Use of the phonation analyzer as a clinical tool.

Isshiki's (1981) proposed index of glottal flow efficiency (ac/dc ratio) and an instrument designed to measure the index (PA 500) were evaluated. Measurements of glottal flow, SPL, and fundamental frequency obtained from the PA 500 were compared with measurements obtained from more established laboratory instruments and found to be similar. Then the PA 500 was used to obtain measurements from 50 subjects without voice disorders or laryngeal pathology, 14 subjects with voice disorders and no laryngeal pathology, and 41 subjects with voice disorders and laryngeal pathology. Comparisons of ac/dc

Comments on the myoelastic - aerodynamic theory of phonation.

The myoelastic-aerodynamic theory of phonation has been quantified and tested with mathematical models. The models suggest that vocal fold oscillation is produced as a result of asymmetric forcing functions over closing and opening portions of the glottal cycle. For nearly uniform tissue displacements, as in falsetto voice, the asymmetry in the driving forces can result from the inertia of the air moving through the glottis. This inertia can in turn be enhanced or suppressed by supraglottal or subglottal vocal tract coupling. More obvious and pronounced asymmetries in the driving forces are as

Effects on vocal fold collision and phonation threshold pressure of resonance tube phonation with tube end in water.

PURPOSE: Resonance tube phonation in water (RTPW) or in air is a voice therapy method successfully used for treatment of several voice pathologies. Its effect on the voice has not been thoroughly studied. This investigation analyzes the effects of RTPW on collision and phonation threshold pressures (CTP and PTP), the lowest subglottal pressure needed for vocal fold collision and phonation, respectively. METHOD: Twelve mezzo-sopranos phonated into a glass tube, the end of which was placed under the water surface in a jar. Subglottal pressure, electroglottography, and audio signals were recorde

Phonation differentiation by non-contact laryngeal magnetomyography.

Phonation is important for our daily communication and requires the activation of internal and external laryngeal muscles, which can be recorded by electromyography (EMG) using surface or needle electrodes. Here we present a new noncontact method, laryngeal magnetomyography. As a proof-of-concept, we investigated the feasibility of differentiating various vocalization conditions using laryngeal MMG in two healthy subjects using optically pumped magnetometers (OPM). We recorded magnetic muscle activity of the larynx and neighboring cervical muscles using a 3 × 5 array of OPMs. Subjects vocalize

Nonlinear source-filter coupling in phonation: theory.

A theory of interaction between the source of sound in phonation and the vocal tract filter is developed. The degree of interaction is controlled by the cross-sectional area of the laryngeal vestibule (epilarynx tube), which raises the inertive reactance of the supraglottal vocal tract. Both subglottal and supraglottal reactances can enhance the driving pressures of the vocal folds and the glottal flow, thereby increasing the energy level at the source. The theory predicts that instabilities in vibration modes may occur when harmonics pass through formants during pitch or vowel changes. Unlike

Inhibition of auditory cortical neurons during phonation.

The neuronal activity of the auditory cortex in the squirrel monkey was investigated during phonation in order to study relationships between brain structures involved in phonation and audition. Responses of single cells in the superior temporal gyrus were extracellularly recorded during stimulation by self-produced vocalizations (elicited either through electrical stimulation of the central gray or uttered spontaneously), and by tape-recorded vocalizations played back together with other species-specific cells. More than half of those cells which reacted to the play-back of self-produced voca

Modeling the influence of the extrinsic musculature on phonation.

Neck muscles play important roles in various physiological tasks, including swallowing, head stabilization, and phonation. The mechanisms by which neck muscles influence phonation are not well understood, with conflicting reports on the change in fundamental frequency for ostensibly the same neck muscle activation scenarios. In this work, we introduce a reduced-order muscle-controlled vocal fold model, comprising both intrinsic muscle control and extrinsic muscle effects. The model predicts that when the neck muscles pull the thyroid cartilage in the superior-anterior direction (with a suffici

Ventricular pressures in phonating excised larynges.

Pressure in the laryngeal ventricle was measured with a beveled needle connected to a pressure transducer in excised canine larynges. Air pressures within the ventricle were obtained for different adduction levels of the true vocal folds (TVFs), false vocal folds (FVFs), and subglottal pressures (Ps). Results indicated that the air pressures in the ventricle appear to be strongly related to the motion of the FVFs rather than to the effects of TVF vibration. Both dc and ac pressures depend on FVF adduction, amplitude of motion of the FVFs, and whether the FVFs touch each other during the vibrat

Dynamics of subneoglottic lumen in tracheoesophageal phonation.

The patient who employs tracheoesophageal (TE) phonation uses expiratory air passing through the TE fistula to vibrate the mucosa of the neoglottis located in the hypopharynx. To clarify the dynamics of the subneoglottic lumen during phonation, we performed fiberoptic endoscopy and fluoroscopy in 13 TE speakers. During phonation, fiberoptic endoscopy showed concentric closure of the esophagus with ballooning of the subneoglottic lumen, followed by opening of the esophagus during inspiration. Fluoroscopy revealed a dilated subneoglottic lumen and a closure of the esophagus at the bottom of the

The effect of manipulating phonation duration on stuttering.

Two single-subject experiments with two adult stutterers were conducted to assess the effect of changing the frequency of phonation intervals that were shorter or greater than prescribed durations during spontaneous speech. Both subjects modified the frequency of prescribed phonation intervals and showed changes in the frequency of these intervals that were positively related to decreases and increases in stuttering frequency. A perceptual analysis of the subjects' speech quality during phonation control conditions showed that when stuttering frequency was reduced, listeners could detect chang

Laryngeal closure pressure during phonation in humans.

We investigated the laryngeal closure pressure during sustained phonation in five healthy adult men with no pathological lesions in the glottis using a round pressure transducer with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 1 mm. The transducer was placed between the vocal processes through the mouth. Subjects were asked to utter a sustained phonation of the vowel sound /eh/ at varying pitch and intensity in modal register. The laryngeal closure pressure ranged from 0 to 200 cmH2O. At a comfortable pitch and intensity, the pressure was below 50 cmH2O. The pressure was correlated with pitch, but

Long-term model of induced canine phonation.

Experimental induced phonation in the dog has been used in short-term studies by several investigators and has proved quite useful in laryngeal research. In this study a long-term canine phonation model is described that uses permanently implanted electrodes on the superior and recurrent laryngeal nerves. A serial induced phonation model has not been previously reported and is needed for laryngeal research in which voice results are a primary end point. Inexpensive, reliable, nontoxic electrodes were designed and fabricated. The laryngeal nerves were found to be quite susceptible to injury, ne
