The occurrence of intermittent aphonia, perceived as sudden interruptions of voicing in connected speech, often reflects high stiffness of the vocal fold mucosa as part of a voice disorder. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the overarching hypothesis that the aphonic instances in voices with intermittent aphonia are not totally randomly appearing, but related to syllable stress and phonetic context. Recordings of 31 dysphonic patients with intermittent aphonia reading a standard text were analyzed perceptually. All vowels of the text were labelled and categorized with regard to syl

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of unilateral functional inhibition of the lingual nerve in phonetic function by perceptual and acoustic analyses of speech, which was recorded before and after neurosensory modification of the lingual nerve, and a comparison of results of these evaluations with a subject's self-perception.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 10 volunteers who had the lingual nerve of the right side anesthetized. The analyzed recordings consisted of terms directly dependent on the tongue for production. In the perceptual analysis, pitch and l

The relationship between acoustic-phonetic disturbances and lexical access was explored in an aphasic patient. M.L. had a restricted disturbance of phonemic discrimination that affected the discrimination of voicing contrasts in nonword stimuli. Despite this impairment, her discrimination of voicing contrasts in words and her comprehension of auditorily presented words containing voiced segments was excellent. Performance on lexical decision was impaired: M.L.'s rejection of nonwords was poor and her reaction times and error rates for word stimuli showed a trend toward being influenced by the

Traditional auditory-based assessment procedures for diagnosing articulation disorders are limited in that they provide no direct information on activities of the speech organs. In this study electropalatography (EPG) was used to obtain details of tongue contacts with the hard palate in 4 articulation-disordered children, 2 of whom had been categorized as dysarthric. Their lingual-palatal contact patterns during four repetitions of word lists containing lingual consonants in different phonetic environments, were compared with each other and with a group of normal speakers. EPG provided relevan

Sound symbolism research reveals a non-arbitrary relationship between phonetics and meaning, demonstrating strong associations between consonant sounds and perceived shape, size, or material. Onomatopoeias, a subset of sound-symbolic expressions, directly imitate the sound they describe. Previous evidence suggests that onomatopoeias encode sound-symbolic cues, even across unfamiliar languages, but no specific research has been done specifically on material-related sound symbolism. To examine how the phonetic and semantic features of onomatopoeic words influence material perception, we conducte

Previous research has shown that /l/ in Spanish displays patterns of articulatory variability that are determined by a complex interaction of phonetic, phonological and dialectal factors. In this study, we report the results of an experiment using Ultrasound Tongue Imaging (UTI) that tests /l/-articulations in a dialectal cross-section of Spanish speakers. We show that lengthening of /l/ in phrase-edge contexts is accompanied by articulatory distinctions (e.g. root/dorsum retraction) for some speakers, whereas others produce lengthened realisations of /l/ in these contexts without observable d

BACKGROUND: Palatoplasty is aimed to achieve normal speech, improve food intake, and ensure successful maxillary growth. However, the velopharyngeal function is harder to control than other functions. Therefore, many studies on the prognostic factor of velopharyngeal insufficiency have been conducted. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between speech outcomes and multimodality based on intraoral and preoperative three-dimensional computerized tomographic (CT) findings.
METHODS: Among 73 children with cleft palate who underwent palatoplasty between April 2011 and August 2014 at Kyu

Two experiments investigated whether profoundly deaf children's rhyming ability was determined by the linguistic input that they were exposed to in their early childhood. Children educated with Cued Speech (CS) were compared to other deaf children, educated orally or with sign language. In CS, speechreading is combined with manual cues that disambiguate it. The central hypothesis is that CS allows deaf children to develop accurate phonological representations, which, in turn, assist in the emergence of accurate rhyming abilities. Experiment 1 showed that the deaf children educated early with C

Human vocal tracts, like other physical traits, exhibit extensive interindividual variation. However, little is known about how this variation translates into phonetic diversity between speakers, and ultimately, across languages. Here we develop a biocultural model of phonetic evolution, analogous to Russell Lande's model of multivariate phenotypic evolution. We show that individual vocal tract morphologies and associated articulatory strategies leave consistent acoustic signatures, resulting in a characteristic pattern of phonetic variation within speaker groups that correlates with the patte

BACKGROUND: Phonetic transcription is a core skill of speech and language therapists/pathologists (SLT/Ps) for clinical assessment of speech sounds and/or errors, and linguists for investigation of phonetic phenomena in various languages; hence, it is included in the curriculum of the corresponding degree programme. Many experts and course instructors have discussed their opinions on different aspects of phonetic transcription teaching and/or reported their own training programmes. However, no review has systematically summarized the types of expert recommendations and training methodology rep

Research has implicated the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) in mapping acoustic-phonetic input to sound category representations, both in native speech perception and non-native phonetic category learning. At issue is whether this sensitivity reflects access to phonetic category information per se or to explicit category labels, the latter often being required by experimental procedures. The current study employed an incidental learning paradigm designed to increase sensitivity to a difficult non-native phonetic contrast without inducing explicit awareness of the categorical nature of the s

Recently, there has been a tendency for the growth of dentognathic deformities of various origins, accompanied by phonetic abnormalities. Aim - to increase the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment of dentognathic deformities, accompanied by phonetic disorders, by developing and justifying a set of diagnostic and therapeutic measures based on a multidisciplinary approach. The influence of the state of ENT organs on the formation of dentognathic deformities and phonetic disturbances is studied in 155 children. A clinical dental examination and orthodontic treatment is performed in 82 patients

Efficient speech perception requires listeners to maintain an exquisite tension between stability of the language architecture and flexibility to accommodate variation in the input, such as that associated with individual talker differences in speech production. Achieving this tension can be guided by top-down learning mechanisms, wherein lexical information constrains interpretation of speech input, and by bottom-up learning mechanisms, in which distributional information in the speech signal is used to optimize the mapping to speech sound categories. An open question for theories of perceptu

BACKGROUND: In recent years, analyses of cleft palate speech based on phonetic transcriptions have become common. However, the results vary considerably among different studies. It cannot be excluded that differences in assessment methodology, including the recording medium, influence the results.
AIMS: To compare phonetic transcriptions from audio and audio/video recordings of cleft palate speech by means of outcomes of per cent correct consonants (PCC) and differences in consonant transcriptions.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: Thirty-two 3-year-olds born with cleft palate were audio and audio/video

Research on aphasia has struggled to identify apraxia of speech (AoS) as an independent deficit affecting a processing level separate from phonological assembly and motor implementation. This is because AoS is characterized by both phonological and phonetic errors and, therefore, can be interpreted as a combination of deficits at the phonological and the motoric level rather than as an independent impairment. We apply novel psycholinguistic analyses to the perceptually phonological errors made by 24 Italian aphasic patients. We show that only patients with relative high rate (>10%) of phonetic

In this study, we provide nasendoscopic observations illustrating phonetic contrasts in Arabic that require supraglottic laryngeal adjustments, and demonstrate how the laryngeal constrictor mechanism contributes to phonetic descriptions of phonation. Arabic has two pharyngeal consonants (voiceless and voiced). We show, among others, that these two consonants possess auditory features of whisperiness and creaky voice, respectively, and are always produced with supraglottic constriction similar but more marked than during whispery or creaky [i]. However, during modal [i], the epilaryngeal space

PURPOSE: This study aimed to show (a) whether the minimal competence core (MCC) of consonants used by African American preschoolers in I. Stockman (2006) can be observed in a larger group of children using shorter and more controlled speech samples and (b) whether the MCC pass/fail outcomes are differentially related to performance on selected criterion measures of typical and atypical speech.
METHOD: Word-initial single and clustered consonants were sampled in the conversational speech of 120 Head Start students who were distributed in a northern (Lansing, Michigan) and a southern (Baton Rou

This review paper describes an "acoustic-phonetic" experimental approach aimed at understanding normal and abnormal speech perception processes from both a behavioral and an electrophysiologic perspective. First, we consider the relevant acoustic characteristics of speech and identify a set of acoustic-phonetic classes that represent the parameters most important for making an acoustic signal sound like speech. Second, we review what is known about the neurophysiologic representation of acoustic-phonetic speech parameters in animal and human subjects. Third, we describe how an acoustic-phoneti
