Spin-Phonon Coupling in Ferromagnetic Monolayer Chromium Tribromide.

Novel 2D magnets exhibit intrinsic electrically tunable magnetism down to the monolayer limit, which has significant value for nonvolatile memory and emerging computing device applications. In these compounds, spin-phonon coupling (SPC) typically plays a crucial role in magnetic fluctuations, magnon dissipation, and ultimately establishing long-range ferromagnetic order. However, a systematic understanding of SPC in 2D magnets that combines theory and experiment is still lacking. In this work, monolayer chromium tribromide is studied to investigate SPC in 2D magnets via Raman spectroscopy and

Deterministic Single-Phonon Source Triggered by a Single Photon.

We propose a scheme that enables the deterministic generation of single phonons at gigahertz frequencies triggered by single photons in the near infrared. This process is mediated by a quantum dot embedded on chip in an optomechanical circuit, which allows for the simultaneous control of the relevant photonic and phononic frequencies. We devise new optomechanical circuit elements that constitute the necessary building blocks for the proposed scheme and are readily implementable within the current state-of-the-art of nanofabrication. This will open new avenues for implementing quantum functiona

Unraveling Four-Phonon Contributions to Thermoelectricity in Ba4Sb2Se and Ba4Sb2Te.

We conduct a systematic study that couples first-principles lattice dynamics, including three- and four-phonon processes, with parameter-free electronic transport simulations to quantify the thermoelectric response of Ba4Sb2Se and Ba4Sb2Te. Four-phonon processes expand the anharmonic phase space and suppress the lattice thermal conductivity. Directional and doping trends mirror the band structure. Multiple valence and conduction band valleys increase the Seebeck coefficient while keeping the carrier mobility competitive. With three- and four-phonon processes, the peaks of the thermoelectric fi

Giant-magnetocaloric effect and phonon dynamics in (GdCe)CrO3.

We investigate the effect of Ce3+ substitution on the magnetic ordering and phonon dynamics of the GdCrO3 orthorhombic perovskite. The Ce doped compound exhibits long-range canted antiferromagnetism with Néel transitions, TN at ~ 173 K, accompanied by spin-flip, TSF at ~ 10 K. Ce3+ incorporation drives a modification of the spin-flip transition from the [Formula: see text]configuration to [Formula: see text] inducing a reorientation of the spin axis between the [Formula: see text]and (001) crystallographic planes. This spin reorientation is governed by Zeeman energy and produces pronounced fie

Symmetry-Driven Phonon Confinement in 2D Halide Perovskites.

Quantum confinement in low-dimensional semiconductors modifies not only electronic states but also the underlying lattice dynamics. In halide perovskite nanoplatelets, however, how confinement influences vibrational behavior alongside structural and optical properties remains an open question. Here, we synthesize CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets with atomically defined thicknesses from 2 to 5 monolayers and examine their structural, optical, and vibrational responses. Structural characterization combined with photoluminescence spectroscopy and first-principles calculations confirms reliable thickness con

Far-Infrared Hyperbolic Phonon-Polaritons in Zirconium Disulfide.

Group-IVB transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently emerged as a promising material platform for extreme light confinement, with Hf-based compounds demonstrating confinement factors exceeding two orders of magnitude in the far-infrared. As a complementary Zr-based member of this material family, zirconium disulfide ( ZrS 2 ) combines a comparably broad first Reststrahlen band with semiconducting electronic character, providing a wide spectral window for phonon-dominated far-infrared hyperbolic polaritonics. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of far-infrared hyper

Discovery of Universal Phonon Thermal Hall Effect in Crystals.

Thermal Hall effect (THE) in insulators is a remarkable phenomenon that arises from the motion of chargeless quasiparticles under a magnetic field. While magnons or various exotic excitations were considered as the origin of THE in some magnetic materials, there is more and more evidence suggesting that phonons play a significant role. However, the mechanism behind phonon THE is still unknown. Here we report the observation of THE, including planar THE, in a broad range of nonmagnetic insulators and semiconductors: SrTiO_{3}, SiO_{2} (quartz), MgO, MgAl_{2}O_{4}, Si, and Ge. While the presence

Phonon excitations in Eu2Ir2O7probed by inelastic x-ray scattering.

The study of phonon dynamics and its interplay with magnetic ordering is crucial for understanding the unique quantum phases in the pyrochlore iridates. Here, through inelastic x-ray scattering on a single crystal sample of the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7, we map out the phonon excitation spectra in Eu2Ir2O7and compare them with the theoretical phonon spectra calculated using the density functional theory. Possible phonon renormalization across the magnetic long-range order transition is observed in our experiments, which is consistent with the results of the previous Raman scattering experime

Spin-phonon coupling in a double-stranded model of DNA.

We address the electron-spin-phonon coupling in an effective model Hamiltonian for DNA to assess its role in spin transfer involved in the Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) effect. The envelope function approach is used to describe semiclassical electron transfer in a tight-binding model of DNA at half filling in the presence of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. Spin-phonon coupling arises from the orbital-configuration dependence of the spin-orbit interaction. We find spin-phonon coupling only for the acoustic modes, while the optical modes exhibit electron-phonon interaction without coupli

Band Structure, Phonon Spectrum and Thermoelectric Properties of Ag3CuS2.

Sulfides and selenides of copper and silver have been intensively studied, particularly as potentially efficient thermoelectrics. Ag3CuS2 (jalpaite) is a related material. However very little is known about its physical properties. It has been found that the compound undergoes several structural phase transitions, having the tetrahedral structural modification I41/amd at room temperature. In this work, its band structure, phonon spectrum and thermoelectric properties were studied theoretically and experimentally. Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity were measur

Optomechanical Quantum Entanglement Mediated by Acoustic Phonon Fields.

We present exact solutions for the quantum time evolution of two spatially separated, local inductor-capacitor (LC) oscillators that are coupled optomechanically to a long elastic strip that functions as a quantum thermal acoustic field environment. We show that the optomechanical coupling to the acoustic environment gives rise to causal entanglement dynamics between the two LC oscillators in the absence of resonant photon exchange between them, and that significant entanglement develops regardless of the environment temperature. Such a process establishes that distributed entanglement may be

Phonon thermal Hall effect in a metallic spin ice.

It has become common knowledge that phonons can generate thermal Hall effect in a wide variety of materials, although the underlying mechanism is still controversial. We study longitudinal κxx and transverse κxy thermal conductivity in Pr2Ir2O7, which is a metallic analog of spin ice. Despite the presence of mobile charge carriers, we find that both κxx and κxy are dominated by phonons. A T/H scaling of κxx unambiguously reveals that longitudinal heat current is substantially impeded by resonant scattering of phonons on paramagnetic spins. Upon cooling, the resonant scattering is strongly affe

The temperature dependence of Cr3+:YAG zero-phonon lines.

This paper deals with the photoluminescence temperature dependence of the zero-phonon lines of Cr(3+) ions in an yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) matrix. Experimental data were analysed in the framework of electron-phonon coupling in the quadratic approximation and it was found that Cr(3+) ions in the YAG matrix are strongly coupled with lattice vibrations, with a Debye temperature of about 550 K and a value of the quadratic coupling constant of 0.65. The analysis of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous contributions to the photoluminescence linewidth is performed and the results obtained are comp

Impact of Acoustic and Optical Phonons on the Anisotropic Heat Conduction in Novel C-Based Superlattices.

C-based XC binary materials and their (XC)m/(YC)n (X, Y ≡ Si, Ge and Sn) superlattices (SLs) have recently gained considerable interest as valuable alternatives to Si for designing and/or exploiting nanostructured electronic devices (NEDs) in the growing high-power application needs. In commercial NEDs, heat dissipation and thermal management have been and still are crucial issues. The concept of phonon engineering is important for manipulating thermal transport in low-dimensional heterostructures to study their lattice dynamical features. By adopting a realistic rigid-ion-model, we reported r

Branch-selective phonon localization through correlated sublattice disorder.

Multiband lattices possess an internal degree of freedom absent from one-band Anderson models. At each Bloch wavenumber the acoustic and optical eigenvectors distribute their motion differently over the sublattices of the unit cell, and manufactured phononic lattices acquire tolerance-induced randomness separately on each sublattice, with tolerances that can be correlated within a cell. This paper develops a branch-resolved sublattice-participation formulation of weak-disorder localization for a grounded diatomic chain, building on the Lyapunov-exponent theory of correlated multicomponent medi

Vacancy-Engineered Phonon Polaritons in a van der Waals Crystal.

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) in low-symmetry van der Waals (vdW) materials enable deep-subwavelength control of mid-infrared light for nanoscale optics and sensing. However, intrinsically reconfiguring their dispersion without external fields, lithography, or chemical intercalation has remained elusive. Here, we introduce a thermomechanical approach that tunes PhPs in α-molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO3) through controlled oxygen vacancy formation and lattice strain. Near-field nanoimaging reveals an average polariton wavevector shift of Δk/k ≈ 0.13 within the lower Reststrahlen band. Stoichiometric ana

Orientational enhancement of surface phonon polarity in superconducting KTaO₃ interfaces.

The critical role of symmetry-breaking interfaces in mediating superconductivity has garnered increasing interest in recent years. KTaO3 (KTO)-based heterointerfaces present a striking example, where the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) exhibits an intriguing dependence on KTO crystallographic orientation. Here we identify a highly anisotropic surface phonon resonance near 107 meV at KTO and KTO-based heterointerfaces using surface-specific, symmetry-sensitive nonlinear optical spectroscopy. Polarity of this phonon mode scales with crystallographic orientation as (111) > (110) ≫ (00

Dynamic tuning of Bloch modes in anisotropic phonon polaritonic crystals.

Phonon polaritons, arising from the coupling of photons with lattice vibrations, enable light confinement on deeply subwavelength scales. Phonon polaritonic crystals (PoCs), leveraging these inherently low-dissipation excitations, have further shown exceptional potential for nanoscale light manipulation through engineered Bloch modes. Yet, their static nature has so far hindered dynamic modulation, thus limiting their adaptability for real-time applications. Here, we demonstrate in situ electrostatic control of low-loss anisotropic phonon-polaritonic Bloch modes in α-MoO3 patterned into a peri

Symmetry-controlled ultrastrong phonon-photon coupling in a terahertz cavity.

Optical cavities provide a powerful means to engineer light-matter hybrid states by coupling confined electromagnetic fields with matter excitations. Achieving in situ control of the coupling strength is essential for investigating how such hybridization evolves with the coupling strength. In this work, we use a symmetry-changing structural phase transition in lead halide perovskites to reversibly tune the phonon-photon coupling strength, leveraging the fact that their phonon frequencies and oscillator strengths are dictated by lattice symmetry. Phonon-polaritonic skyrmions: transition from bubble- to Néel-type.

Optical skyrmions are members of the emerging topological branch of solid-state physics and photonics, allowing for control over topological light textures through light-matter interactions. However, in nanophotonics their practical application has been severely limited by high inherent losses in plasmonic materials, resulting in the lack of tunability between different topological properties. Here, we utilize the strong dispersion of silicon carbide thin films to realize highly confined surface phonon-polariton skyrmion lattices, which we image via near-field microscopy. We experimentally dem
