Dietary Phosphorus Levels Influence Protein-Derived Uremic Toxin Production in Nephrectomized Male Rats.

Gut microbiota-derived uremic toxins (UT) accumulate in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Dietary phosphorus and protein restriction are common in CKD treatment, but the relationship between dietary phosphorus, a key nutrient for the gut microbiota, and protein-derived UT is poorly studied. Thus, we explored the relationship between dietary phosphorus and serum UT in CKD rats. For this exploratory study, we used serum samples from a larger study on the effects of dietary phosphorus on intestinal phosphorus absorption in nephrectomized (Nx, n = 22) or sham-operated (sham, n = 18) male

Dietary phosphorus deficiency impaired growth, intestinal digestion and absorption function of meat ducks.

OBJECTIVE: An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary non-phytate phosphorus (nPP) deficiency on intestinal pH value, digestive enzyme activity, morphology, nutrient utilization, and gene expression of NaPi-IIb in meat ducks from 1 to 21 d of age. METHODS: 525 one-d-old Cherry Valley ducklings were fed diets (with 7 pens of 15 ducklings, or 105 total ducklings, on each diet) with five levels of nPP (0.22, 0.34, 0.40, 0.46 or 0.58%) for 21 d in a completely randomized design. Five experimental diets contained a constant calcium (Ca) content of approximately 0.9%. Body we

Dietary intake of phosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) using Swedish food market basket estimations.

The occurrence of eight phosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) was investigated in 53 composite food samples from 12 food categories, collected in 2015 for a Swedish food market basket study. 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPHP), detected in most food categories, had the highest median concentrations (9 ng/g ww, pastries). It was followed by triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) (2.6 ng/g ww, fats/oils), tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) (1.0 ng/g ww, fats/oils), tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) (1.0 ng/g ww, fats/oils), and tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) (0.80 ng/g ww, pastri

Association of dietary calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium intake with caries status among schoolchildren.

The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between caries experience and daily intake of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), and Ca/P ratio. A total of 2248 schoolchildren were recruited based on a population-based survey. Each participant received a dental examination and questionnaire interviews about the 24-hour dietary recalls and food frequency. The daily intake of Ca, P, Mg, and Ca/P ratio were inversely associated with primary caries index, but only the Ca/P ratio remained significant after adjusting for potential confounders. According to the Taiwanese Dietary

Effect of dietary phosphorus and calcium depletion-repletion on pig performance and bone quality.

Feeding strategies such as P and Ca depletion and repletion have been proposed to reduce the use of phosphate or improve P utilisation efficiency in pig diets, thereby contributing to the sustainability of the sector. A total of 48 entire male pigs (18.47 ± 3.18 kg BW) were fed a control diet (C = 100% of requirements) and a restricted diet (R = 80-90% of digestive requirements of P and Ca, respectively) in three growth phases, with the following feeding strategies: CCC, RCC, RRC and RRR. At each phase, growth performance and bone characteristics (proportion of low-, medium-, high- and very hi

High dietary calcium to phosphorus ratio is associated with high prevalence of kidney stone.

Kidney stones formation is a multifactorial condition and influenced, in some degree, by dietary habits. Authoritative clinical guidelines published nutritional recommendations for individuals prone to kidney stone formation. The association between dietary intake calcium to phosphorus (Ca/P) ratios and the prevalence of kidney stones is not well-established in extensive epidemiological studies. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017 to 2018 database were utilized in this study. A total of 3 149 participants with a history of kidney stones were enrolled in the pres

The relationship of dietary levels of phosphorus to the production of soft-shelled and shell-less eggs.

The relationship among available levels of dietary phosphorus (.2, .3, and .4%) and the production of soft-shelled (SS) and shell-less (SL) eggs was investigated in 864 White Leghorns of a commercial strain. An 11-month performance profile included hen-day production of hard-shelled (HS), SS, and SL eggs, feed consumption, livability, egg weight, and specific gravity. Percent HS egg production and feed consumption were significantly lower and egg specific gravity was significantly higher among hens consuming the .2% available phosphorus diet when compared to hens consuming the .3 or .4% availa

Effects of low dietary phosphorus on tibia quality and metabolism in caged laying hens.

Osteoporosis is a common bone metabolic disease in caged laying hens. This disease affects animal welfare and economic costs. In this study, a model of osteoporosis induced by low dietary phosphorus was established. A total of sixty 22-week-old Roman white laying hens were randomly divided into two groups, including a control group (group C) and a low dietary phosphorus group (group P). The effects of low dietary phosphorus on the endocrine and tibial osteoprotegerin (OPG)/nuclear factor kappa B receptor activating factor ligand (RANKL) signaling pathways of osteoporosis in caged laying hens w

Role of dietary phosphorus and degree of uremia in the development of renal bone disease in rats.

The remnant kidney rat model has been extensively used for the evaluation of bone changes due to uremia. The present study aimed to assess the effect of the dietary phosphorus availability and of the severity of renal failure on bone histomorphometric changes and various biochemical markers over time in this model. Chronic renal failure (CRF) was induced in male Wistar rats by 5/6th nephrectomy. Half of the number of animals received a standard rat diet (STD) (0.67% P, containing low bioavailable phosphorus of plant origin); the other animals were fed a high phosphorus diet (HPD) (0.93% P, con

Relative effects of PTH and dietary phosphorus on calcitriol production in normal and azotemic rats.

In moderate renal failure, the serum calcitriol level is influenced by the stimulatory effect of high PTH and the inhibitory action of phosphorus retention. Our goal was to evaluate the relative effect that high PTH levels and increased dietary phosphorus had on calcitriol production in normal rats (N) and rats with moderate renal failure (Nx). Normal and Nx (3/4 nephrectomy) rats were divided into two groups: (1) rats with intact parathyroid glands (IPTG) and (2) parathyroidectomized rats in which PTH was replaced (PTHR) by the continuous infusion of rat 1-34 PTH, 0.022 microgram/hr/100 g bod

Inadequate Dietary Phosphorus Levels Cause Skeletal Anomalies and Alter Osteocalcin Gene Expression in Zebrafish.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential mineral for the development and maintenance of the vertebrate skeletal system. Modulation of P levels is believed to influence metabolism and the physiological responses of gene expression. In this study, we investigated the influence of dietary P on skeletal deformities and osteocalcin gene expression in zebrafish (Danio rerio), and sought to determine appropriate levels in a diet. We analyzed a total of 450 zebrafish within 31 days of hatching. Animals were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design that consisted of five replications. After an

Increasing dietary phosphorus intake from food additives: potential for negative impact on bone health.

It is important to consider whether habitual high phosphorus intake adversely affects bone health, because phosphorus intake has been increasing, whereas calcium intake has been decreasing in dietary patterns. A higher total habitual dietary phosphorus intake has been associated with higher serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and lower serum calcium concentrations in healthy individuals. Higher serum PTH concentrations have been shown in those who consume foods with phosphorus additives. These findings suggest that long-term dietary phosphorus loads and long-term hyperphosphatemia may have importa

Liver mitochondrial content is reduced in response to dietary crude protein and phosphorus deficiencies in wethers.

Grazing ruminants consuming CP- and phosphorus (P)-deficient pastures experience reduced voluntary feed intake and liveweight gain, indicating systemic metabolic changes. Because mitochondrial abundance reflects oxidative capacity and metabolic investment, altered mitochondrial content may provide insight into how sheep adapt to nutrient-deficiency-induced reduction of feed intake. This study aimed to determine whether reduced intake caused by CP and P deficiency, or by restriction of an otherwise adequate diet, alters tissue mitochondrial content in young sheep. Forty Merino wethers (7 months

Effects of Lowering Dietary Phosphorus Additive Intake on Mineral Metabolism in Adults with and without CKD.

KEY POINTS: Lowering phosphorus additive intake reduces fibroblast growth factor 23 concentrations in adults with and without CKD. Lowering phosphorus additive intake reduced fibroblast growth factor 23 in White but not in Black healthy individuals. Lowering phosphorus additive intake reduces circulating parathyroid hormone concentrations in individuals with CKD. BACKGROUND: Excess phosphorus additive intake leads to alterations in phosphorus metabolism that are linked to cardiovascular and kidney disease. The effects of lowering phosphorus additive intake in adults with and without CKD are u

More Bone with Less Minerals? The Effects of Dietary Phosphorus on the Post-Cranial Skeleton in Zebrafish.

Dietary phosphorus (P) is essential for bone mineralisation in vertebrates. P deficiency can cause growth retardation, osteomalacia and bone deformities, both in teleosts and in mammals. Conversely, excess P supply can trigger soft tissue calcification and bone hypermineralisation. This study uses a wide range of complementary techniques (X-rays, histology, TEM, synchrotron X-ray tomographic microscopy, nanoindentation) to describe in detail the effects of dietary P on the zebrafish skeleton, after two months of administering three different diets: 0.5% (low P, LP), 1.0% (regular P, RP), and 1

Public health impact of dietary phosphorus excess on bone and cardiovascular health in the general population.

This review explores the potential adverse impact of the increasing phosphorus content in the American diet on renal, cardiovascular, and bone health of the general population. Increasingly, studies show that phosphorus intakes in excess of the nutrient needs of a healthy population may significantly disrupt the hormonal regulation of phosphate, calcium, and vitamin D, which contributes to disordered mineral metabolism, vascular calcification, impaired kidney function, and bone loss. Moreover, large epidemiologic studies suggest that mild elevations of serum phosphate within the normal range a

Effect of excess dietary sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus on excreta moisture of laying hens.

1. Four experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium or phosphate on the water intake and excreta moisture of laying hens. A fifth experiment examined the effect on these variables of increasing amounts of 2 different sodium salts (chloride or bicarbonate) and the interactions with 2 levels of dietary phosphorus. 2. All experiments involved individually caged laying hens fed on diets varying in 1 or 2 minerals in replacement for washed sand. The experimental diets contained mineral concentrations that either met or exceeded the e

Dynamics of skeletal resistance to parathyroid hormone in the rat: effect of renal failure and dietary phosphorus.

UNLABELLED: Secondary hyperparathyroidism develops in renal failure and is generally ascribed to factors directly affecting parathyroid hormone (PTH) production and/or secretion. These include hypocalcemia, phosphorus retention, and a calcitriol deficiency. However, not often emphasized is that skeletal resistance to PTH is an important factor. Our study evaluated: (1) the relative effects of uremia and dietary phosphorus on the skeletal resistance to PTH; and (2) how, during a PTH infusion, the dynamics of skeletal resistance to PTH were affected by renal failure. Renal failure was surgically
