[Ictal visual hallucination intermittent photic stimulation: using evaluation of the clinical findings, ictal EEG, ictal SPECT, and rCBF].

A 43-year-old, right-handed woman experienced right hand paresthesias and a visual field abnormality. We attributed her symptoms to psychiatric abnormalities, due to the presence of delusions and auditory hallucinations. Upon photostimulation, she experienced left visual field hallucinations and demonstrated slow waves on the right parieto-occipital regions. The clinical and electro-encephalographic findings suggested that these episodes were epileptic seizures originating from the right occipital region. Ictal fear appeared at the end of the seizure, reflecting the spread of seizure activity

Effects of Binaural Beat Music Integrated with Rhythmical Photic Stimulation on Anxiety Reduction among Healthy Daycare Center Staff.

This study investigated the efficacy of combining binaural beat music (BBM) with rhythmical photic stimulation at the α frequency in alleviating anxiety among daycare staff and explored its impacts on daycare staff with different anxiety levels. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted, which included three interventions: BBM, BBM integrated with rhythmical photic stimulation, and relaxation music (control group). Participants completed a questionnaire prior to the first intervention, which included personal demographic information and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. The effects of these i

Aberrant functional organization in schizophrenia: analysis of EEG coherence during rest and photic stimulation in drug-naive patients.

EEG coherence provides a measure of functional correlations between two EEG signals. The present study was conducted to examine intrahemispheric EEG coherence at rest and during photic stimulation (PS) in 18 drug-naive patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 30 control subjects. Compared with the controls, the schizophrenic patients had significantly higher intrahemispheric coherence of the resting EEG for the delta band, although no significant group differences were found for other frequency bands. EEG analysis during PS showed that the patients also had significantly higher EEG coherence o

Quantitative EEG analysis at rest and during photic stimulation in drug-naive patients with first-episode paranoid schizophrenia.

In the present study, quantitative EEG analysis was performed at rest and during 10 Hz photic stimulation in 14 drug-naive patients with first-episode paranoid schizophrenia and 20 sex- and age-matched control subjects. Compared with the normal controls, the patients had significantly lower alpha-2 band amplitude in the resting EEG over all recording regions. No significant group differences were found in other frequency bands. In addition, EEG analysis during photic stimulation demonstrated that the patients had a rather uniform topographic profile in EEG amplitude for the alpha band, with si

Effect of photic stimulation on human visual cortex lactate and phosphates using 1H and 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Previous animal and human studies showed that photic stimulation (PS) increased cerebral blood flow and glucose uptake much more than oxygen consumption, suggesting selective activation of anaerobic glycolysis. In the present studies, image-guided 1H and 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was used to monitor the changes in lactate and high-energy phosphate concentrations produced by PS of visual cortex in six normal volunteers. PS initially produced a significant rise (to 250% of control, p less than 0.01) in visual cortex lactate during the first 6.4 min of PS, followed by a significan

Behavioral despair is differentially affected by the length and timing of photic stimulation in the dark phase of an L/D cycle.

The effect of varying the length and timing of photic stimulation in the dark phase of an L/D lighting cycle on behavioral despair was investigated in female Wistar rats. Animals were kept in a vivarium on an L/D 12 h:12 h light cycle (lights on at 0700 h) except for a single day of light exposure in an insulated chamber in the dark phase of the L/D schedule. Light pulses provided by an incandescent lamp (15- and 25-W, for Exps. 1 and 2, respectively) either 2-h (Exp. 1) or 30-min in length (Exp. 2) were administered to independent groups of rats (n=8 each) either in the early, middle or late

Does visual cortex lactate increase following photic stimulation in migraine without aura patients? A functional (1)H-MRS study.

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) has been used in a number of studies to assess noninvasively the temporal changes of lactate (Lac) in the activated human brain. Migraine neurobiology involves lack of cortical habituation to repetitive stimuli and a mitochondrial component has been put forward. Our group has recently demonstrated a reduction in the high-energy phosphates adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and phosphocreatine (PCr) in the occipital lobe of migraine without aura (MwoA) patients, at least in a subgroup, in a phosphorus MRS ((31)P-MRS) study. In previous studies, basal

Hyperventilation and photic stimulation are useful additions to a placebo-based suggestive seizure induction protocol in patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.

The early and definitive diagnosis of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures is a common challenge in epileptology practice. Suggestive seizure induction is a valuable tool to aid the differentiation between epileptic and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures, especially when long-term video-EEG monitoring is inconclusive or unavailable. In this retrospective analysis, we compared the diagnostic yield of a classical, placebo-based induction protocol with that of an extended protocol that includes hyperventilation and photic stimulation as means of suggestion while also implementing more open, standardi

Let there be light: Inhibitory effect of photic stimulation on spike frequency in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis.

Inhibition of epileptic discharges and seizures by sensory stimuli is an interesting phenomenon, but highly understudied. Here, we aimed to investigate the modulation of epileptiform discharges in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy associated with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS) via photic stimulation (PS), based on a hypothesis that light stimulation may activate thalamocortical networks limiting the propagation of interictal epileptiform discharges. In order to do so, all EEGs performed in patients diagnosed with MTLE-HS were reviewed to include available recordings with definite ep

N-methyl-D-aspartate, quisqualate and kainate receptors are all involved in transmission of photic stimulation in the suprachiasmatic nucleus in rats.

In order to clarify the neuronal transmission mechanism of photic stimulation in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the effects of agonists and antagonists for excitatory amino acid receptors on N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity in the pineal gland were observed following the microinjection of drugs into both sides of the nuclei. N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate, and kainate (which are selective agonists for three different subtypes, i.e. NMDA, quisqualate and kainate receptors, respectively) significantly decreased NAT activity similarly to th

Cerebrovascular reactivity after functional activation of the Brain using Photic Stimulation in Migraine and Tension Type Headache: a transcranial doppler Ultrasonography Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies in headache patients measured the cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in response to photic stimulation but they have yielded contradictory results. The purpose of study was to measure CVR of both migraine and chronic tension headache (TTH) patients in response to photic stimulation. METHODS: The study included 37 migraineurs and 24 chronic TTH patients compared with 50 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers. Peak systolic, end diastolic, mean flow velocities and CVR (PSV, EDV, MFV, and CVR) were measured using TCD ultrasonography of the middle, anterior, posterior

Perfusion changes with photic stimulation during two phases of the menstrual cycle: a pilot study comparing controls and true menstrual migraine patients.

BACKGROUND: Much effort has been made over the last two decades to educate and train healthcare professionals working on antimicrobial resistance in French hospitals. However, little has been done in France to assess perceptions, attitudes and knowledge regarding multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs) and, more globally, these have never been evaluated in a large-scale population of medical and non-medical healthcare workers (HCWs). Our aim was to explore awareness among HCWs by evaluating their knowledge of MDROs and the associated control measures, by comparing perceptions between professiona

[Suppression of myoclonus associated with intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) in a case of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease: with special reference to the specificity of IPS frequency].

The present study deals with electrophysiological findings 3 months after the patient fell into an apallic state during the course of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD), when periodic limb myoclonus synchronizing with periodic synchronous discharge (PSD) began to diminish. The findings were as follows: On 2 Hz intermittent photic stimulation (IPS), myoclonus and the diffuse bisynchronous high amplitude sharp wave showed dissociation; the myoclonus was completely suppressed, while the high amplitude sharp wave was elicited. On 3 Hz IPS, myoclonus was incompletely suppressed, corresponding to every

Paroxysmal eyelid movements in patients with visual-sensitive reflex seizures.

AIM: Paroxysmal eyelid movements (PEM) are non-epileptic episodes characterized by eyelid closure, upturning of the eyes, and rapid eyelid flutter. The aim of this study was to report clinical and EEG data of patients with PEM and its relationship with visual sensitivity. METHODS: We studied 26 patients with epilepsy (12 males and 14 females; mean age: 14.0±6.9 years) who presented PEM. The epilepsy was idiopathic generalized (eight cases), idiopathic focal (six cases), symptomatic focal (five cases), and reflex epilepsy (seven cases). PEM and blinking were analysed by video-EEG recordings at

Central pathway of photic reflex myoclonus.

Direct, new evidence for the cortical origin of photic reflex myoclonus in a patient with "posterior cortical atrophy" is provided. Photic stimulation elicited myoclonic jerks in the right upper limb muscles. An H2(15)O-PET activation study with photic stimulation showed increased regional cerebral blood flow not only in both striate cortices but in the left premotor and primary motor areas as well. Transcranial magnetic stimulation over the area of the left occipital cortex elicited motor evoked potentials in the right upper limb muscles. It is concluded that in the central pathway of photic

Characteristic electroencephalographic findings by photic driving in patients with migraine-associated vertigo.

CONCLUSIONS: Patients with migraine-associated vertigo (MAV) may have a higher incidence of photic-driven electroencephalography (EEG) response. The occurrence of photic-driven responses for stimulation at frequencies of 10, 12, and 15 Hz can be considered a positive indicator for MAV. Although photic driving is not specific to migraine, patients with MAV have a higher incidence of photic driving. The distinction between Ménière's disease and MAV by means of EEG would be another interesting topic of research. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to distinguish between patients with MAV

The patent foramen ovale may alter migraine brain activity: A pilot study of electroencephalography spectrum and functional connectivity analysis.

BACKGROUND: A link has been shown between patent foramen ovale (PFO) and migraine, particularly migraine with aura. However, it is unknown if PFO might cause migraine by altering cortical excitability and neural network, which may lower the threshold of cortical spreading depression (CSD). This study aims to compare the spectrum power and functional connectivity of the alpha and beta bands of electroencephalography (EEG) across migraine patients with and without PFO. METHODS: Thirty-five migraine patients with PFO (PFO +), 35 migraine patients without PFO (PFO -) and 20 PFO patients without m

Thalamic activation in photic myoclonus.

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during photic myoclonus was studied by means of positron emission tomography in a 51-year-old male patient suffering from MERRF (myoclonic epilepsy with ragged-red fibres). Frequencies of 3 Hz and 5 Hz flash stimulation were used. Both frequencies elicited paroxysmal EEG-abnormalities but only the higher frequency induced generalized myoclonic jerks. We found a left dominated significant increase of rCBF in the thalamus during myoclonus. The thalamic asymmetry was significant when tested with an ROI approach. The myoclonic activity was accompanied by signifi

Electroencephalographic recordings in dogs: Prevention of muscle artifacts and evaluation of two activation techniques in healthy individuals.

This study was performed to improve a standard anesthetic protocol for electroencephalography (EEG) in dogs and to evaluate the effect of photic stimulation and hyperventilation on the EEG of healthy dogs. Ten clinically and neurologically normal beagle dogs were anesthetized with propofol given intravenously with average doses of 7.5mg/kg for induction and 0.37mg/kg/min constant rate infusion for maintenance. Rocuronium bromide (0.4mg/kg IV) was used as a peripheral muscle relaxant in order to prevent muscle artifacts. EEGs were recorded digitally using five subdermal needle electrodes. Photi
