Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae at the animal-human interface: ecology, pathogenicity, and genomic gaps in a changing climate.

Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae (Pdd) is a Gram-negative bacillus with zoonotic potential and wide global distribution. Found primarily in marine ecosystems, Pdd has been reported in diverse hosts, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, marine mammals, sea turtles, birds, and humans. Infection dynamics are influenced by host factors such as environmental stress and pre-existing conditions, while clinical signs are frequently non-specific, making misdiagnosis likely. Its virulence involves iron acquisition systems, a polysaccharide capsule, hemolysins, and other cytotoxic enzymes, some

The Role of Cosolvent-Water Interactions in Effects of the Media on Functionality of Enzymes: A Case Study of Photobacterium leiognathi Luciferase.

A complex heterogeneous intracellular environment seems to affect enzymatic catalysis by changing the mobility of biomolecules, their stability, and their conformational states, as well as by facilitating or hindering continuously occurring interactions. The evaluation and description of the influence of the cytoplasmic matrix components on enzymatic activity are problems that remain unsolved. In this work, we aimed to determine the mechanisms of action of two-component media with cosolvents of various molecular sizes on the complex multi-stage bioluminescent reaction catalyzed by bacterial lu

Isolation of a novel gene from Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida and analysis of the recombinant antigen as promising vaccine candidate.

Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (PDP) is the causative agent of fish pasteurellosis, a bacterial disease causing important losses in marine aquaculture. Vaccines against the pathogen can be a way to control the infection and avoid antibiotic treatments. However, a satisfactory protective vaccine against fish pasteurellosis is not commercially available. In this study, a biotechnogical approach based on reverse vaccinology has been used to identify potential vaccine candidates for the development of a recombinant subunit vaccine. Systemic administration of Photobacterium angustum promotes antitumor immunity and direct tumor lysis in murine models of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Despite remarkable advances in cancer immunotherapy, including immune checkpoint inhibitors and adoptive cell therapies, many patients fail to achieve durable responses due to factors such as immunosuppressive tumor microenvironments, poor tumor antigenicity, and systemic toxicity. These limitations underscore the need for alternative platforms that can elicit robust and localized antitumor immune responses. Bacteria have emerged as promising candidates owing to their natural ability to selectively colonize tumors, stimulate innate and adaptive immunity, and be engineered for thera

Fatal Hemorrhagic Septicemia in Common Guitarfish (Rhinobatos rhinobatos) Caused by Photobacterium damselae Subsp. damselae in a Controlled Environment.

Elasmobranchs, including sharks and rays, are commonly housed in public aquariums due to their ecological significance and educational value. The common guitarfish (Rhinobatos rhinobatos), currently listed as 'Critically Endangered' by the IUCN, is particularly susceptible to population declines due to overfishing and bycatch. While generally considered robust, individuals in captivity may experience stress-related health issues, increasing their susceptibility to infectious diseases. This study investigates a mortality event affecting three 20-year-old guitarfish kept in a public aquarium. Th
