Developments in photoplethysmography (PPG) hardware make this device a promising tool for non-invasive deep-tissue hemodynamic measurements. The aim of this study was to validate the use of PPG as a tool for non-invasive bone hemodynamic measurements. A new PPG device capable of measuring bone hemodynamic responses was designed, tested and validated. Validation experiments included cold exposure, arterial occlusion, skin occlusion and nitroglycerin exposure. Cold exposure resulted in a decrease in skin perfusion (p = 0.011) and bone perfusion (p = 0.005); arterial occlusion also resulted in de

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of global mortality, with early detection critical for improving patient outcomes. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a widely used, non-invasive signal in both clinical monitors and consumer wearables; however, noise susceptibility and the absence of direct electrophysiological markers limit its utility across home and clinical settings. We present CardioPPG, a cross-modal learning framework that augments PPG with ECG-derived representations to improve CVD prediction and enable ECG synthesis for interpretability. Through cross-modal contrasti

AIMS: Invasive haemodynamic monitoring of heart failure (HF) is used to detect deterioration in an early phase thereby preventing hospitalizations. However, this invasive approach is costly and presently lacks widespread accessibility. Hence, there is a pressing need to identify an alternative non-invasive method that is reliable and more readily available. In this pilot study, we investigated the relation between wrist-derived photoplethysmography (PPG) signals and the invasively measured pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP).

INTRODUCTION: Anastomotic leakage after gastrointestinal surgery has a high impact on patient's quality of life and its origin is associated with inadequate perfusion. Imaging photoplethysmography (iPPG) is a noninvasive imaging technique that measures blood-volume changes in the microvascular tissue bed and detects changes in tissue perfusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Intraoperative iPPG imaging was performed in 29 patients undergoing an open segment resection of the small intestine or colon. During each surgery, imaging was performed on fully perfused (true positives) and ischemic intestines

Assessment of the cerebral blood-flow-reserve in patients with cerebrovascular diseases is extremely important in terms of making prognosis, determining treatment tactics, and controlling the revascularization outcome in the case of reconstructive interventions on the brain vessels. However, there is no easy-to-use, contactless method for either assessing the functional reserve of the cortical vascular network or intraoperative monitoring of surgical intervention. Our study aims to demonstrate feasibility of green-light imaging photoplethysmography (iPPG) to estimate cerebrovascular functional

OBJECTIVE: Wearable photoplethysmography (PPG) is increasingly used for seizure detection due to its ability to unobtrusively estimate heart rate (HR). However, the vulnerability of PPG to body movements often leads to unreliable HR estimates, compromising accurate seizure detection. Although this limitation is well recognized, methods for rejecting artifactual HR measures-and their impact on seizure detection performance-have not yet been studied.
METHODS: We sourced data from the PROMISE trial, a home-based study in children with refractory epilepsy that evaluated the performance of the Nig

BACKGROUND: cardiovascular disease is the leading global cause of mortality. Photoplethysmography (PPG), widely embedded in consumer wearables, offers a scalable diagnostic modality. However, prior approaches are often constrained by handcrafted features, binary classification, and poor generalizability, limiting their clinical impact.
METHODS: A deep hierarchical convolutional neural network (CNN) was designed to extract both morphological and rhythmic characteristics directly from raw photoplethysmography (PPG) signals. The architecture employs progressively structured convolutional filter

To address the current issues of data imbalance and scarcity in photoplethysmography (PPG) data for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) prediction, this study proposes an improved conditional Wasserstein generative adversarial network with gradient penalty (CWGAN-GP). The algorithm integrated gated recurrent unit (GRU) networks and self-attention mechanisms to construct a generator, aiming to produce high-quality PPG signals. Various data augmentation methods, including the improved CWGAN-GP, were employed to expand the PPG dataset, and multiple classifiers were applied for T2DM prediction analysi

Objective. sleep staging is essential for diagnosing sleep disorders and managing sleep health. Traditional methods require time-consuming manual scoring. Recent photoplethysmography (PPG)-based deep learning models perform well on local datasets but struggle with external generalization due to data drift.Approach. this study evaluates multi-source domain training for improving out-of-distribution generalization in four-class sleep staging (wake, light, deep, rapid eye movement) from raw PPG time-series. The trained deep learning model is denoted SleepPPG-Net2. Additionally, we examined the im

Continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring is essential for cardiovascular health, yet current BP sensors face cuff-dependent limitations. Cuff-free alternatives still suffer from discomfort and discontinuous measurement. Here a wearable hyperspectral photoplethysmography (HS-PPG) is reported for continuous and nonconscious BP monitoring. The HS-PPG module integrates an ultrathin and high-resolution double-folded solid immersion grating microspectrometer (DFSIG-µSPEC) with a white light LED. DFSIG-µSPEC shows an average spectral resolution of 3.4 nm for 550-800 nm in the operational range. The

The jugular venous pulse (JVP) is the reference physiological signal used to detect right atrial and central venous pressure (CVP) abnormalities in cardio-vascular diseases (CVDs) diagnosis. Invasive central venous line catheterization has always been the gold standard method to extract it reliably. However, due to all the risks it entails, novel non-invasive approaches, exploiting distance cameras and lasers, have recently arisen to measure the JVP at the external and internal jugular veins. These remote options however, constraint patients to very specific body positions in front of the imag

Photoplethysmography (PPG) has emerged as a highly convenient and non-invasive technique for assessing heart rate and its variability in wearable health monitoring devices. However, a drawback lies in the energy demand of PPG systems which consequently increases the average power consumption of the wearable devices integrated with PPG sensors. In this paper, we present our efforts towards packaging a novel compressed-sensing (CS) based ultra-low power PPG application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) into a wearable device and testing it through a preclinical human study. The system comprises

This study describes the design and validation of an experimental setup for testing photoplethysmographic (PPG) devices intended for the non-invasive monitoring of vascular accesses in hemodialysis patients. Continuous assessment of arteriovenous fistulas is essential to detect pathological conditions such as stenosis, which can compromise patient safety and dialysis efficacy. While PPG-based sensors are capable of detecting such anomalies, their clinical applicability must be supported by controlled in vitro validation. The developed system replicates the anatomical, mechanical, optical, and

This study explored the relationship between cognitive function and the autonomic nervous system by categorizing participants into two groups based on their cognitive function scores in each domain of the SNSB-D: a High Cognitive Performance (HCP) group and a Low Cognitive Performance (LCP) group. We analyzed the Pulse Rate Variability (PRV) parameters for each group. Photoplethysmography (PPG) data were collected and processed to remove noise, and the PRV parameters in the time and frequency domains were extracted. To minimize the impact of age and years of education on the PRV parameters, we

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is used for heart-rate monitoring in a variety of contexts and applications due to its versatility and simplicity. These applications, namely studies involving PPG data acquisition during day-to-day activities, require reliable and continuous measurements, which are often performed at the index finger or wrist. However, some PPG sensors are susceptible to saturation, motion artifacts, and discomfort upon their use. In this paper, an off-the-shelf PPG sensor was benchmarked and modified to improve signal saturation. Moreover, this paper explores the feasibility of usi

In the application of wrist-based Photoplethysmography (PPG) devices for health monitoring, assessing the quality of PPG signals is essential for accurately monitoring cardiovascular parameters. However, the wrist-based PPG signal is susceptible to motion and light interference in practical applications. A machine learning-based signal quality assessment algorithm for wrist PPG signals was proposed to improve the accuracy and reliability of the monitoring data. The algorithm's performance was evaluated on two datasets: the publicly available Wearable and Clinical Signals (WCS) dataset, contain

The relative merits of toe systolic blood pressure and ankle systolic pressure in predicting the result of forefoot amputation were evaluated in 30 limbs of 27 patients who underwent digit or transmetatarsal amputation. Twenty-four (89%) patients were diabetic. An infrared photoplethysmograph placed distal to a pneumatic digit occluding cuff allowed rapid, simple preoperative assessment of toe systolic pressures. Ankle pressures was measured by Doppler ultrasound. Twenty (67%) amputations healed primarily, whereas 10 ultimately required reamputation at the below-knee level. The mean ankle pres
