Sunbeds emitting ultraviolet radiation (UVR) are an established carcinogen, but little attention has been given to the adverse photosensitivity reactions the UVR exposure can cause. We addressed this information gap through systematic review of the literature on photosensitivity reactions reported following community sunbed use. A systematic search of Medline (via PubMed), CINAHL and Embase identified studies published in English (inception to May 2025). The protocol was registered in Prospero (CRD420251048551). We included all study designs. Quality was assessed using JBI Critical Appraisal C

Various drugs and chemicals break the DNA strand under ultraviolet irradiation. This study aimed to clarify the DNA-breaking activity (DBA) of serum from 39 patients with various photosensitivity disorders and that from eight normal subjects. A mixture of serum and circular plasmid DNA was exposed to longwave ultraviolet radiation, and the photoinduced cleavage of plasmid DNA was examined by electrophoretic analysis. DBA was found in serum from patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria (2 of 2), drug-induced photosensitivity (3 of 5), chronic actinic dermatitis (1 of 12) and hydroa vaccinifo

Drug-induced photosensitivity of the skin is drawing increasing attention. In past few decades, photosensitivity has been reported with an array of drugs, and is now recognized as a noteworthy medical problem by clinicians, regulatory authorities and pharmaceutical industry. The photosensitivity is of two types i.e., phototoxicity and photoallergy. Phototoxic disorders have a high incidence, whereas photoallergic reactions are much less frequent in human population. Several hundred substances, chemicals, or drugs may invoke phototoxic and photoallergic reactions. In order to avoid photosensiti

Antibiotics have been observed to cause drug-induced reactions. These can include a cutaneous adverse reaction to the drug (CARD) such as photosensitivity. A 51-year-old woman initiated doxycycline monohydrate for rosacea. Within nine days, she developed two different, simultaneous skin rashes: a phototoxic reaction and a morbilliform drug eruption. The medication was stopped; topical and oral corticosteroids were initiated. Within two weeks, her rashes resolved. Common cutaneous adverse reactions to doxycycline include photosensitivity and morbilliform exanthem. Less common skin side effects

Drug-induced photosensitivity involves reactions to medication triggered by exposure of the skin to ultraviolet light. Medications that trigger reactions can be topical or oral. Following interaction of ultraviolet radiation with a chemical present in sufficient amounts in the skin, one of the several reactions may occur in susceptible patients, most commonly photoallergy or phototoxicity. These reactions can be diagnosed separately based on pathogenesis, clinical characteristics and histopathology. Phototoxic disorders have a higher incidence than photoallergic disorders. The action spectra f

BACKGROUND: Although photosensitivity disorders have been well described, their incidence in a referral institution had not been studied.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of photosensitivity disorders, including photocontact dermatitis, in an academic medical center.
METHODS: The results of the assessment of 203 consecutive patients, all of whom had phototests, referred for the evaluation of photosensitivity disorders during a 7.3-year period were reviewed.
RESULTS: The mean age was 50 years, and 63% of the patients were women. The most frequent diagnoses w

Photodermatoses are skin disorders induced or exacerbated by light. They can be broadly classified into four groups: (i) immunologically mediated photodermatoses (idioapathic); (ii) drug- and chemical-induced photosensitivity; (iii) defective DNA repair disorders; and (iv) photoaggravated dermatoses. The exact pathomechanism of those diverse skin reactions to light radiation remains unclear. Immunologically mediated photodermatoses are the most common dermatoses among all photosesnsitive disorders. The management of photodermatoses starts with clinical recognition of characteristic lesions loc

Methotrexate is an antimitotic and immunosuppressive agent used for the treatment of cancer, psoriasis, and rheumatologic disorders and for the termination of ectopic pregnancies. Physicians advising patients on the use of methotrexate need to be aware of its possible side effects, including photosensitivity. We present a patient who received methotrexate for the termination of an ectopic pregnancy and experienced a severe reactivation of her sunburn. The literature was reviewed on the types of photosensitivity and their relationship to methotrexate.

A wide variety of skin conditions may present in patients with lupus erythematosus (LE). These can be broadly divided into three main groups: cutaneous forms of LE ('LE-specific skin disease'), non-specific cutaneous manifestations of SLE ('LE non-specific skin disease') and cutaneous complications of drug treatments for LE. This review examines clinical photosensitivity in LE, a trait most commonly associated with cutaneous forms of LE but which may also manifest in SLE. All humans are photosensitive, developing reddening of the skin if exposed to sufficient ultraviolet radiation (UVR). There

Inherited photosensitivity syndromes are a heterogeneous group of genetic skin disorders with tremendous phenotypic variability, characterized by photosensitivity and defective DNA repair, especially nucleotide excision repair. A cohort of 17 Iranian families with heritable photosensitivity syndromes was evaluated to identify their genetic defect. The patients' DNA was analyzed with either whole-exome sequencing or RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). The interpretations of the genomic results were guided by genome-wide homozygosity mapping. Haplotype analysis was performed for cases with recurrent mutat

Photosensitivity disorders are caused by a variety of mechanisms. Three common themes are as follows: excess chromophore allowing visible light energy to cause photodynamic damage, reduced DNA repair capacity to UV-induced DNA damage, and enhanced sensitivity to light-induced allergens mediated immunologically. Although the cause of each condition may be known, the precise pathogenesis underlying the photosensitivity has taken longer to understand. By focussing on three clinical disorders under each of these themes, we have explored the following: why erythropoietic protoporphyria differs so m

Photodermatoses represent a heterogeneous collection of disorders unified by the characteristic of being provoked through exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Generally, these conditions are classified into the following categories: immunologically mediated photodermatoses, chemical- and drug-induced photosensitivity, photoaggravated dermatoses and photosensitivity associated with defective DNA repair mechanisms or chromosomal instabilities. The list of photodermatoses is extensive, and each individual photodermatosis is understood to a different extent. Regardless, there exists a paucity of inf

Out of a total of 370 patients with photosensitivity disorders, the light sensitivity had started at an age of 15 years or earlier in 95 cases (26%). Seventy-eight of these suffered from polymorphous light eruptions (PMLE). In half of the PMLE cases the morphology of the light-induced rash was classified as prurigo-like, and in one-fourth as vesicopapular. Other registered photodermatoses with childhood onset were xeroderma pigmentosum, erythropoietic protoporphyria, systemic lupus erythematosus and pellagra. No childhood cases of photosensitivity from external chemicals or internal medication

Photosensitive disorders in children are not uncommon in our country. It is often difficult to establish the diagnosis, either due to confusing presentation or ignorance by the parents. We review the presentation and management of photosensitive disorders in children.Detailed history and thorough clinical examination is essential in arriving at a particular diagnosis. Photosensitive disorders in children are idiopathic, or related to nutritional, genetic, metabolic or connective tissue diseases. Most photosensitive disorders begin in infancy or childhood and persist for invariable period durin

The porphyrias are a group of mainly inherited disorders of heme biosynthesis where accumulation of porphyrins and/or porphyrin precursors gives rise to 2 types of clinical presentation: cutaneous photosensitivity and/or acute neurovisceral attacks. The cutaneous porphyrias present with either bullous skin fragility or nonbullous acute photosensitivity. This review discusses the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, laboratory diagnosis, complications, and current approach to porphyria management. Although focusing mainly on their dermatological aspects, the article also covers th

Trichothiodystrophy (TTD), an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by sulfur-deficient brittle hair, identifies a group of genetic disorders with an altered synthesis of high-sulfur matrix proteins and a defect in excision repair of ultraviolet damage in fibroblasts of most TTD patients. In contrast to patients with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), TTD patients do not have an increased frequency of skin cancers. TTD patients may be grouped into four categories: 1) those without photosensitivity and without a defect in excision repair of UV damage; 2) those without photosensitivity and with an

INTRODUCTION: Dapsone (4,4'- diamino diphenyl sulfone, DDS) is an antimicrobial sulfonamide used for non-dermatological and dermatological disorders. Dapsone has been associated with a wide range of cutaneous adverse effects, with photosensitivity being an unusual side effect.
CASE PRESENTATION: A case of dapsone-induced photosensitivity was reported in a patient with lepromatous leprosy. A 46-year-old male patient complained of redness and scaling, with itching over his face, nape, the flexural aspect of his neck, and bilateral upper and lower limbs, during the second month of multidrug mult

Urine is the most frequent specimen used in the initial evaluation of adult patients who present with photosensitivity. When urine porphyrins are abnormal, characterization of the chromatogram is facilitated by calculation of uroporphyrin-to-heptacarboxylate porphyrin (uro/hepta) and uroporphyrin-to-isocoproporphyrin (uro/iso) ratios. The most frequent abnormal pattern, and that most consistent with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT), is an uro/hepta ratio < or =2.0 and an uro/iso ratio < or =18. When the uro/hepta or uro/iso ratios are less consistent with PCT, other less common porphyrin disorder

The cutaneous manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus infection include papulosquamous diseases, viral and fungal infections, and neoplastic disorders. Eczematous photosensitivity disorders have been reported in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. We describe a patient with advanced acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who developed photodistributed hypertrophic lichen planus. We believe this is a distinct cutaneous manifestation of human immunodeficiency virus infection.
