Sulfur dioxide inhibition of photosynthesis in isolated spinach chloroplasts.

Photosynthetic oxygen evolution by isolated spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts approached complete inhibition in the presence of a 5 mm concentration of sulfur dioxide. A similar inhibition was observed in the presence of equimolar concentrations of bisulfite ions, suggesting a parallel mode of action. In contrast, an equimolar concentration of sulfite ions was markedly less inhibitory and sulfate ions caused negligible inhibition of apparent photosynthesis. The mode of action of sulfur dioxide and related sulfur anions in inhibiting photosynthesis was found to be essentially independ

Harnessing algal biology for engineering photosynthesis and metabolism in plants.

Photosynthesis underpins global food production and energy conversion across the biosphere and remains a central target for improving biological and agricultural productivity. Previous methods to improve photosynthetic efficiency in land plants include enhancing carbon fixation, bypassing photorespiration, and optimizing Rubisco efficiency; however, recent advances in algal biology reveal alternative strategies. Here, we review three key traits of algal biology with translational potential for plant biotechnology: chlorophyll c-based light-harvesting systems, pyrenoid-associated carbon-concent

Boundaries of photosynthesis: adaptations of carbon fixation in extreme environments.

Extreme environments challenge fundamental pillars of photosynthesis: light capture and carbon fixation. Organisms thriving in extreme conditions, such as high and low temperatures, extreme pH levels, and high salinity, have evolved remarkable adaptive mechanisms allowing them to sustain photosynthesis. Research into these adaptations has expanded our understanding of the limits and evolution of photosynthesis, while also providing promising biotechnological applications. In this review, we explore the adaptations that tolerant and extremophilic photosynthetic organisms have evolved, overcomin

Drought and rewatering effects on soybean photosynthesis, physiology and yield.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic liver disease leads to neurocognitive impairment (NCI) and more advanced liver fibrosis is associated with greater deficits. Further, cognitive performances do not differ significantly among patients affected by diverse types of chronic liver diseases. Thus, it would be useful to have a clinical tool associated with early cognitive change applicable to the HIV-infected population with high HCV prevalence. Aim of the analysis was to assess the association between NCI and aspartate aminotransferase-platelet ratio index (APRI) or Fibrosis-4, which are non-invasive scores use

Microamperometric estimation of photosynthesis inhibition in a single algal protoplast.

The single-cell level inhibition of photosynthesis by some chemicals was investigated from the light-irradiation induced response of intracellular oxygen reduction current at an ultramicroelectrode inserted into a single algal protoplast. The addition of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU), an electron-transport inhibitor, decreased a current peak appeared immediately after the light irradiation. The pI50 value (the negative decadic logarithm of the concentration needed for 50% inhibition) was determined from the change in response patterns and found to be 6.9 for DCMU. 2,4-Dichloro

Nitric Oxide and Photosynthesis Interplay in Plant Interactions with Pathogens.

Nitric oxide and reactive nitrogen species are key signalling molecules with pleiotropic effects in plants. They are crucial elements of the redox regulation of plant stress responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. Nitric oxide is known to enhance photosynthetic efficiency under abiotic stress, and reactive nitrogen species-mediated alterations in photosynthetic metabolism have been shown to confer resistance to abiotic stresses. However, knowledge about the role of reactive nitrogen species in plant immune responses remains limited. In this review, we highlight recent advancements in underst

Anacardic Acid Derivatives Affect the in Vitro Reactions of Photosynthesis.

The dichloromethane extract of the cashew nuts from Anacardium occidentale was fractionated by rotation locular countercurrent chromatography aimed at discovering metabolites that could be useful as new models for photosynthesis inhibitors. The chemical fractionation afforded a complex mixture of anacardic acids, which upon catalytic hydrogenation yielded anacardic acid (1). Methylation of 1 via reaction with diazomethane afforded an ester 2. Both compounds were evaluated using polarographic approaches and fluorescence studies of chlorophyll a (ChL a). The in vitro assays informed the decision

A transcriptional response to singlet oxygen, a toxic byproduct of photosynthesis.

The ability of phototrophs to convert light into biological energy is critical for life on Earth. However, there can be deleterious consequences associated with this bioenergetic conversion, including the production of toxic byproducts. For example, singlet oxygen (1O2) can be formed during photosynthesis by energy transfer from excited triplet-state chlorophyll pigments to O2. By monitoring gene expression and growth in the presence of 1O2, we show that the phototrophic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides mounts a transcriptional response to this reactive oxygen species (ROS) that requires the

The cutaneous photosynthesis of previtamin D3: a unique photoendocrine system.

The skin has been recognized as the site for the sun-mediated photosynthesis of vitamin D3; until recently, however, very little was known about either the sequence of events leading to the formation of vitamin D3 in human skin or the factors that regulate the synthesis of this hormone. It is now established that, during exposure to sunlight, the cutaneous reservoir of 7-dehydrocholesterol (principally in the stratum Malpighii) converts to previtamin D3. Once this thermally labile previtamin is formed, it undergoes a temperature-dependent isomerization to vitamin D3 over a period of 3 days. Th

Effects of halogenated organic compounds on photosynthesis in estuarine phytoplankton.

Chlorine oxidants (chlorine gas, sodium hypochlorite, and calcium hypochlorite) are used as biocides to control fouling in seawater cooled power generating plants and to kill pathogens in sewage effluents entering estuarine waters. Organisms killed include algae, fungi, bacteria, barnacles, oysters, and clams. Use of these chemicals in saline waters results in the formation of halogenated by-products (JOHANNESSON 1958, DUURSAM & PARSI 1976, DOVE 1973). BEAN et al, (1978), in a study of chlorinated seawater, identified eighteen organic compounds generated by chlorination. Due to rapid substitut

[Relation of the growth of Anabaena variabilis cyanophages to photosynthesis and respiration].

Cyanophages A-1 (L) and A-4C (L) grow within the cells of Anabaena variabilis under aerobic conditions in the dark in the presence of endogenous or exogenous (surcose) sources of energy. DNP inhibits the growth of cyanophages in the light and almost completely supresses it in the dark, o-phenanthroline entirely supresses the growth in both cases. DCMU has almost no effect on the yield of the virus in the light. Virus particles can apparently be synthesized at the account of the energy of both oxidative and cyclic photophosphorylation.

Rubisco activase is a key regulator of non-steady-state photosynthesis at any leaf temperature and, to a lesser extent, of steady-state photosynthesis at high temperature.

The role of Rubisco activase in steady-state and non-steady-state photosynthesis was analyzed in wild-type (Oryza sativa) and transgenic rice that expressed different amounts of Rubisco activase. Below 25°C, the Rubisco activation state and steady-state photosynthesis were only affected when Rubisco activase was reduced by more than 70%. However, at 40°C, smaller reductions in Rubisco activase content were linked to a reduced Rubisco activation state and steady-state photosynthesis. As a result, overexpression of maize Rubisco activase in rice did not lead to an increase of the Rubisco activat

Lysine butyrylation modulates central carbon metabolism and photosynthesis in cyanobacteria.

Cyanobacteria, evolutionarily ancient photoautotrophs, serve as key model organisms for studying diverse biological processes. Lysine butyrylation (Kbu) is an emerging post-translational modification implicated in diverse biological processes from bacteria to mammals. However, the distribution and functional significance of Kbu in cyanobacteria have yet to be elucidated. In this study, we present the first proteome-wide analysis of Kbu in the model cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7002 using peptide pre-fractionation, butyrylation antibody enrichment and high-accuracy mass spectrome

Metabolic partitioning between photosynthesis and osmotrophy in Collodaria photosymbiotic holobionts.

Collodaria (Radiolaria) are widespread marine planktonic protists that host photosynthetic microalgal symbionts. Within this photosymbiosis, they can contribute substantially to primary production, particularly in oligotrophic ocean regions. Despite their ecological importance, the mechanisms underlying the formation and maintenance of photosymbiosis are poorly understood. To uncover the metabolic dependencies within this photosymbiotic system, we develop a stable isotope labeling strategy that allows us to investigate the assimilation of inorganic and organic carbon in the Collodaria holobion

Extracellular polymeric substances enhanced photosynthesis over respiration in Microcystis aeruginosa.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play a critical role in Microcystis-dominated freshwater cyanobacterial blooms. However, the mechanisms through which EPS affects Microcystis photosynthesis, respiration, and further affects its growth are not understood completely. To address this, we investigated the effects of varying EPS concentrations on the physiological processes of Microcystis aeruginosa. The results demonstrated that increasing EPS concentrations significantly enhanced both cell density and energy fixation efficiency, accompanied by a reduction in CO2 emission flux. Specificall

Interdependent iron and phosphorus availability controls photosynthesis through retrograde signaling.

Iron deficiency hampers photosynthesis and is associated with chlorosis. We recently showed that iron deficiency-induced chlorosis depends on phosphorus availability. How plants integrate these cues to control chlorophyll accumulation is unknown. Here, we show that iron limitation downregulates photosynthesis genes in a phosphorus-dependent manner. Using transcriptomics and genome-wide association analysis, we identify two genes, PHT4;4 encoding a chloroplastic ascorbate transporter and bZIP58, encoding a nuclear transcription factor, which prevent the downregulation of photosynthesis genes le

Improving photosynthesis and crop productivity by accelerating recovery from photoprotection.

Crop leaves in full sunlight dissipate damaging excess absorbed light energy as heat. When sunlit leaves are shaded by clouds or other leaves, this protective dissipation continues for many minutes and reduces photosynthesis. Calculations have shown that this could cost field crops up to 20% of their potential yield. Here, we describe the bioengineering of an accelerated response to natural shading events in Nicotiana (tobacco), resulting in increased leaf carbon dioxide uptake and plant dry matter productivity by about 15% in fluctuating light. Because the photoprotective mechanism that has b

Chloroplast genome editing of Rubisco boosts photosynthesis and plant growth.

Photosynthetic inefficiencies limit the productivity and sustainability of crop production and the resilience of agriculture to future societal and environmental challenges. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) has inherently low catalytic efficiency, making it a key target for photosynthesis and crop improvement. However, introducing mutations to the chloroplast-encoded Rubisco large subunit (rbcL), which contains the enzyme's catalytic sites, is technically challenging. In this study, we successfully generate a range of chloroplast-genome-edited Arabidopsis thaliana plan
