Common chronic conditions such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes are increasingly associated to metabolic and cardiovascular complications. Although Phyllanthus tenellus leaves have been used in decoctions as a popular remedy to control blood glucose levels and hypertension, its use needs a scientific basis. This study was therefore undertaken to report a phytochemical analysis of P. tenellus leaves and to test if the main active compound has potential to simultaneously tackle several pathophysiological features of metabolic syndrome and diabetes-related metabolic and vascular disorders such

Phyllanthus tenellus Roxb. (Phyllanthaceae) is a plant used in Brazilian folk medicine for the treatment of intestinal infections and diabetes. Despite its use in traditional medicine, it was reported that P. tenellus extract may cause several effects in the central nervous system (CNS) of animals, such as agitation and signs of depression. The aim of this study was to determine the main constituents of P. tenellus methanol extract and to investigate whether the extract is able to inhibit the enzymes prolyl oligopeptidase (POP), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV).

The effects of extracts of five Australian Phyllanthus species (P. hirtellus, P. gunnii, P. gasstroemii, P. similis and P. tenellus), other plant extracts and the antiviral drug foscarnet on duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) endogenous DNA polymerase (DNAp) activity were compared. All 5 Phyllanthus species caused 50% inhibition at concentrations of dry weight between 350-800 micrograms/ml, which is comparable with the effect described for P. amarus on the DNAp of human and woodchuck hepatitis B viruses. Incubation of P. hirtellus with 100 ID50 DHBV neutralized infection. However, neither P. gasstr

Oropouche virus (OROV) has emerged as a growing public health concern in Latin America, with an unprecedented surge in Oropouche fever cases since 2023. Previously considered a sporadic and neglected arboviral infection, Oropouche fever now represents one of the most rapidly expanding arboviral threats in the region. Despite its increasing incidence, no approved vaccines or antiviral therapies are available, highlighting the urgent need for effective interventions. Natural compounds, particularly those derived from Phyllanthus brasiliensis, have shown promising antiviral properties against sev

Phyllanthus Urinaria L. (PUL) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat hepatic and renal disorders. However, the mechanism of its hepatoprotective action is not fully understood. In the present study, blood biochemical indexes and liver histopathological changes were used to estimate the extent of hepatic injury. GC/MS and LC/MS-based untargeted metabolomics were used in combination to characterize the potential biomarkers associated with the protective activity of PUL against CCl4-induced liver injury in rats. PUL treatment could reverse the increase in ALT, AST and ALP induced by CCl4

Phyllanthus emblica is valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties, yet the genomic divergence between localized and widespread cultivars remains poorly understood. We investigated the genomes of two individuals from the endemic cultivar 'Hongguang' (HG), propagated via regional grafting, and the commercially widespread 'Dongkeng' (DK), known for its superior protein content. Using whole-genome sequencing, we reconstructed phylogenies from two nuclear markers, profiled genome-wide variations, assembled chloroplast genomes, and verified relative plastid copy numbers via real-time quanti

Background: Phyllanthus amarus (PA) is widely studied for its hepatoprotective properties but has recently received increasing attention due to its diverse anti-inflammatory effects. However, the effects of PA in modulating immune responses in the central nervous system leading to protection against functional changes remain unexplored. Therefore, we sought to examine the protective effects of 80% v/v ethanol extract of PA on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced non-spatial memory impairment and neuroinflammation. Methods: Selected major phytoconstituents of PA extract were identified and quantifi

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Quality control is a powerful method for ensuring the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines. Phyllanthus emblica L. fruit (PE) has been extensively used in both Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. However, the current Indian and Chinese pharmacopeias set a minimum concentration threshold of gallic acid to identify qualified PE samples, without providing a clear framework to distinguish superior-quality PE samples.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To establish an efficacy-oriented quality grading framework for herbal medicines, using PE, a medicinal plant known
