Morphology, epidemiology, and phylogeny of Babesia: An overview.

Babesiosis is a tick-borne hemoprotozoan disease of domestic and wild animals. The disease is caused by various species of Babesia and some species of Babesia have also zoonotic significance. The parasite in vertebrate hosts' remains in erythrocytes and the morphology of Babesia spp. is not uniform in all vertebrate hosts. With the advancement of science, particularly the use of molecular techniques made it easy to study the evolution of parasites and thereby reclassifying Babesia spp. as per their phylogeny and to establish the relation of one isolate of Babesia spp. with isolates throughout

Phylogeny and evolution of apicoplasts and apicomplexan parasites.

The phylum Apicomplexa includes many parasitic genera of medical and veterinary importance including Plasmodium (causative agent of malaria), Toxoplasma (toxoplasmosis), and Babesia (babesiosis). Most of the apicomplexan parasites possess a unique, essential organelle, the apicoplast, which is a plastid without photosynthetic ability. Although the apicoplast is considered to have evolved through secondary endosymbiosis of a red alga into the common ancestral cell of apicomplexans, its evolutionary history has been under debate until recently. The apicoplast has a genome around 30-40 kb in leng

Evolution, phylogeny, and molecular epidemiology of Chlamydia.

The Chlamydiaceae are a family of obligate intracellular bacteria characterized by a unique biphasic developmental cycle. It encompasses the single genus Chlamydia, which involves nine species that affect a wide range of vertebral hosts, causing infections with serious impact on human health (mainly due to Chlamydia trachomatis infections) and on farming and veterinary industries. It is believed that Chlamydiales originated ∼700mya, whereas C. trachomatis likely split from the other Chlamydiaceae during the last 6mya. This corresponds to the emergence of modern human lineages, with the first d

Molecular phylogeny of the blowfly genus Chrysomya.

Chrysomya Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a genus of blowfly commonly observed in tropical and subtropical countries of the Old World. Species in this genus are vectors of bacteria, protozoans and helminths, cause myiasis, are predators of other carrion insects, and are important forensic indicators. Hypotheses concerning the evolution of sex determination, larval anatomy and genome size in Chrysomya have been difficult to evaluate because a robust phylogeny of the genus was lacking. Similarly, the monophyly of subgenera was uncertain. The phylogeny of Chrysomya spp. was reconstr

Genome structure and phylogeny in the genus Brucella.

PacI and SpeI restriction maps were obtained for the two chromosomes of each of the six species of the genus Brucella: B. melitensis, B. abortus, B. suis, B. canis, B. ovis, and B. neotomae. Three complementary techniques were used: hybridization with the two replicons as probes, cross-hybridization of restriction fragments, and a new mapping method. For each type strain, a unique I-SceI site was introduced in each of the two replicons, and the location of SpeI sites was determined by linearization at the unique site, partial digestion, and end labeling of the fragments. The restriction and ge

Some reflections on the phylogeny and function of the pineal.

The pineal gland is a universal feature of vertebrate organization and has been implicated in the control of rhythmic adaptations to daily and seasonal cycles. This paper considers three aspects of pineal function; the generation of a rhythmical endocrine signal (the nocturnal synthesis of melatonin) and the use of the signal in the regulation of circadian and photoperiodic functions. The shape of the nocturnal signal is determined by an interaction of afferent neural control and biochemical processes intrinsic to the pinealocyte. The nature of the effect of the signal upon circadian systems i

Microplastic toxicity in aquatic organisms across phylogeny.

Microplastic (MP) contamination of aquatic ecosystem had been escalated several folds and became concerning for the inhabiting organisms. Their accumulation in aquatic biota, ranging from lower invertebrates to higher vertebrates, underscores the severity of their toxicological impact and raises critical concerns for ecosystem health. Many of the researchers concentrated on assessment of MP distribution across environmental compartments and analysis of the physicochemical characteristics and their bioaccumulation in freshwater and marine species. Current review provides a comprehensive informa

Sleep Phylogeny: Have We Jumped the Shark?

Sleep is considered to be ubiquitous in the animal kingdom. Scientists in part believe this because sleep is increasingly defined solely by behavioral measures. This has resulted in an astonishing expansion of species reported to sleep. But have we gone too far? Have scientists jumped the shark? This idiom refers to when an idea has exhausted its core intent and creates ideas that are discordant with its original purpose. In this commentary, I discuss what I see as an emerging problem in how we define sleep and the attendant implications.

Hershkovitzia (Diptera: Nycteribiidae): revision, phylogeny, and cophylogeny.

Hershkovitzia Guimares & DAndretta, 1956 belongs to Nycteribiidae (Diptera), a family of hematophagous and obligate ectoparasites of bats. Hershkovitzia parasitize bats in the Thyropteridae family, which includes only one genus, Thyroptera Spix, 1823. Hershkovitzia species mostly have a one-to-one association pattern with their hosts, except for H. cabala Peterson & Lacey, 1985 and Hershkovitzia autinoae sp. nov., which share the same host. A review is presented of the species known to date, i.e., H. primitiva Guimares & DAndretta, 1956, H. coeca Theodor, 1967, H. inaequalis Theodor, 1967, H.

Babesia Life Cycle - When Phylogeny Meets Biology.

Although Babesia represents an important worldwide veterinary threat and an emerging risk to humans, this parasite has been poorly studied as compared to Plasmodium, its malaria-causing relative. In fact, Babesia employs highly specific survival strategies during its intraerythrocytic development and its intricate journey through the tick vector. This review introduces a substantially extended molecular phylogeny of the order Piroplasmida, challenging previous taxonomic classifications. The intriguing developmental proficiencies of Babesia are highlighted and compared with those of other haemo

Phylogeny of Yellow Fever Virus, Uganda, 2016.

In April 2016, a yellow fever outbreak was detected in Uganda. Removal of contaminating ribosomal RNA in a clinical sample improved the sensitivity of next-generation sequencing. Molecular analyses determined the Uganda yellow fever outbreak was distinct from the concurrent yellow fever outbreak in Angola, improving our understanding of yellow fever epidemiology.

Legionella pneumophila: population genetics, phylogeny and genomics.

Legionella pneumophila is a human pathogen that was recognized only about 30 years ago. It is the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, a severe pneumonia that is transmitted through inhalation of aerosols of contaminated water. Shortly after its discovery, the ability of Legionella to multiply intracellularly in fresh water protozoa was discovered. This long lasting co-evolution between the eukaryotic host and Legionella has led to the selection of a panoply of virulence factors, which allow to exploit important cellular processes during infection. Compelling evidence for the importance o

Biology of kidney cells: ontogeny-recapitulating phylogeny.

Biology of kidney cells can be used as a model for further understanding of ontogeny-recapitulating phylogeny. The common and species-specific structural and functional relationship between blood capillaries and the environment via a filtration barrier of nephrons is a biological phenomenon resulting from renal cell memory acquired through evolution. Genetically programmed development, a subsequent series of gene expression, and inductive interactions played a key role in differentiation and maintenance of specific activities of kidneys in birds and mammals. Various environmental factors may a

Mammalian intestinal allometry, phylogeny, trophic level and climate.

An often-stated ecomorphological assumption that has the status of 'textbook knowledge' is that the dimensions of the digestive tract correlate with diet, where herbivores-consuming diets of lower digestibility-have longer intestinal tracts than faunivores-consuming diets of higher digestibility. However, statistical approaches have so far failed to demonstrate this link. Here, we collated data on the length of intestinal sections and body mass of 519 mammal species, and test for various relationships with trophic, climatic and other biological characteristics. All models showed a strong phylo

Review: HIV-1 phylogeny during suppressive antiretroviral therapy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Studies of HIV-1 genetic diversity can provide clues on the effect of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on viral replication, the mechanisms for viral persistence, and the efficacy of new interventions. This article reviews methods for interrogating intrahost HIV-1 diversity, addresses the ongoing debate regarding HIV-1 compartmentalization and replication during ART, and summarizes recent findings on the effects of curative strategies on HIV-1 populations. RECENT FINDINGS: HIV-1 replication in the blood is virtually halted upon the initiation of ART. However, proliferation of c

Tumor phylogeny inference using tree-constrained importance sampling.

MOTIVATION: A tumor arises from an evolutionary process that can be modeled as a phylogenetic tree. However, reconstructing this tree is challenging as most cancer sequencing uses bulk tumor tissue containing heterogeneous mixtures of cells. RESULTS: We introduce P robabilistic A lgorithm for S omatic Tr ee I nference (PASTRI), a new algorithm for bulk-tumor sequencing data that clusters somatic mutations into clones and infers a phylogenetic tree that describes the evolutionary history of the tumor. PASTRI uses an importance sampling algorithm that combines a probabilistic model of DNA seque

BorreliaBase: a phylogeny-centered browser of Borrelia genomes.

BACKGROUND: The bacterial genus Borrelia (phylum Spirochaetes) consists of two groups of pathogens represented respectively by B. burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme borreliosis, and B. hermsii, the agent of tick-borne relapsing fever. The number of publicly available Borrelia genomic sequences is growing rapidly with the discovery and sequencing of Borrelia strains worldwide. There is however a lack of dedicated online databases to facilitate comparative analyses of Borrelia genomes. DESCRIPTION: We have developed BorreliaBase, an online database for comparative browsing of Borrelia genomes. The

The phylogeny of yellow fever virus 17D vaccines.

In recent years the safety of the yellow fever live vaccine 17D came under scrutiny. The focus was on serious adverse events after vaccinations that resemble a wild type infection with yellow fever and whose reasons are still not known. Also the exact mechanism of attenuation of the vaccine remains unknown to this day. In this context, the standards of safety and surveillance in vaccine production and administration have been discussed. Therein embodied was the demand for improved documentation of the derivation of the seed virus used for yellow fever vaccine production. So far, there was just
