Saddle and leg forces during lateral movements in dressage.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: In the equestrian world it is assumed that riders use changes in weight distribution and leg forces as important instruments to give horses directions about speed and direction of movement. However, the changes of these forces have never been quantified. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the distribution of normal forces (perpendicular to surface) underneath the saddle and of normal forces exerted by the rider's legs during lateral movements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven riders performed 3 different exercises: riding straight ahead, shoulder-in and travers at trot. Th

Clearance of filtered fluid from the lung during exercise: role of hyperpnea.

During strenuous exercise in sheep, lung lymph flow increases within seconds and rises to levels 7- to 10-fold over baseline. Concomitant with the flow increase, the lymph protein content rapidly decreases to levels consistent with severe capillary hypertension. This pattern of clearance of filtered fluid is quite different than is seen with the passive capillary hypertension that results from mechanical obstruction of the mitral valve. In passive capillary hypertension, the increase in lymph flow and reduction in lymph protein content develop over several hours. The purpose of this study was

Furosemide attenuates the exercise-induced increase in pulmonary artery wedge pressure in horses.

Right atrial (RA), right ventricular (RV), pulmonary artery (PA), and pulmonary artery wedge (PAW) pressures were examined, using catheter-mounted micromanometers, in 8 healthy horses at rest and during galloping on a treadmill at belt speeds of 8, 10, and 13 m/s. The in vivo signals from the micromanometers were matched with those from conventional fluid-filled catheter transducers leveled at the scapulohumeral joint. Thirty minutes after completing control exercise measurements, furosemide was administered IV at a dosage of 1 mg/kg of body weight, and resting, as well as exercise, measuremen

Prior exposure to a running wheel and scheduled food attenuates polydipsia acquisition.

Groups of rats were given different histories before exposure to daily, 2-h fixed-interval (FI) 1-min food-schedule sessions with water available. In a previous study, a group with a history of chronic exposure to FI 1-min sessions without water subsequently had a reduced rate of acquisition and final level of schedule-induced polydipsia compared to a control group lacking this history. In the present study, groups with histories of chronic exposure to FI 1-min sessions and a concurrent running wheel were even more attenuated in their subsequent acquisition of polydipsia. Substitution of 5% et

Muscle disorders and rehabilitation in canine athletes.

Muscle disorders associated with physical exertion in human athletes include delayed-onset muscle soreness, muscle strain, muscle tears, rhabdomyolysis, and acute and chronic compartment syndromes. Given that the structure of muscle is similar among different species, it is reasonable to expect that dogs experience the same phenomena. This article focuses on several of the muscle disorders of bird dogs, namely, coccygeal muscle injury and infraspinatus muscle contracture, and on those of dogs involved in tracking-obedience-protection training, namely, fibrotic myopathy, with an additional disc

Role of Exercise on Inflammation Cytokines of Neuropathic Pain in Animal Models.

Neuropathic pain (NP) resulting from a lesion or disease of the somatosensory system can lead to loss of function and reduced life quality. Neuroinflammation plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of NP. Exercise as an economical, effective, and nonpharmacological treatment, recommended by clinical practice guidelines, has been proven to alleviate chronic NP. Previous studies have shown that exercise decreases NP by modifying inflammation; however, the exact mechanisms of exercise-mediated NP are unclear. Therefore, from the perspective of neuroinflammation, this review mainly d

Swimming Exercise Protocol and Care Methods for Pregnant Rats.

The developmental origins of health and disease concept highlights the impact of early environments on chronic non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Studies using animal models have investigated how maternal factors such as undernutrition, overnutrition, obesity, and exposure to chemicals or hypoxia affect fetal development and offspring health, leading to issues like low birth weight, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Given the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity among reproductive-age women, effective interventions a

The carotid body mediates peak oxygen uptake during maximal physical exertion in rats.

Cardiorespiratory responses to physical exercise are expected to meet the organism's metabolic demands. As carotid body (CB) glomus cells have been proposed as metabolic sensors, we sought to determine their contribution to peak oxygen uptake ( V ̇ O 2 peak ${\dot V_{{{\mathrm{O}}_2}{\mathrm{peak}}}}$ ) during exercise in rats. Adult male Wistar Kyoto rats underwent bilateral co-injection of two adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) at the CB bifurcation (AVV-TH-Cre-SV40 and AVV-hSyn-DREADD(Gi)-mCherry). Clozapine-N-oxide (1 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered to activate the inhibitory DREADD-Gi rece

Oxygen consumption and gait variables of Arabian endurance horses measured during a field exercise test.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Arabian horses have morphological, muscular and metabolic features designed for endurance races. Their gas exchange and gait variables were therefore measured during a field exercise test. This study presents original respiratory and locomotor data recorded in endurance horses under field conditions. HYPOTHESIS AND OBJECTIVES: Respiratory gas exchange ratio (RER) of Arabian horses at the speed required to win endurance races (18 km/h for 120-160 km) are <1 and running economy (RE) is also low in order to maintain exercise intensity using aerobic metabolism for lo

The effect of treadmill speed and gradient on equine hindlimb muscle activity.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Locomotion requires successful negotiation of different terrains, but we currently know little of how the musculoskeletal system adapts to cope with positive and negative slopes. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of treadmill speed and gradient on equine hindlimb muscle mean electromyographic (EMG) intensity. METHODS: Surface EMG recorded the activity of gluteus medius (GM), biceps femoris (BF), vastus lateralis (VL), gastrocnemius lateralis (GL) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) in 6 horses at walk (1.4-1.6 m/s) and trot (2.6-3 m/s) on 3 different treadmill g

Identification of key genes in immune-response post-endurance run in horses.

Intense physical activity in endurance horses triggers complex immune and inflammatory responses, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptations remain unclear. This study investigated immune-related transcriptomic changes following a 160 km endurance ride, focusing on sex-based differences. Using a bioinformatics approach, differentially expressed genes (DEGs), pathways, microRNAs (miRNAs), and transcription factors (TFs) were analyzed before (T0) and after (T1) the ride. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis was conducted to identify key regulatory genes. Pathway enrichment

Eyeblink conditioning in rats.

Acquisition of eyeblink conditioned responses to a tone was studied in restrained male albino rats. Animals were placed in a modified restraining cage with their heads immobilized by surgically implanting a small bolt at the top of the skull and fastening it to the cage. Eyeblink responses were measured by a phototransistor which detected changes in the level of light reflected by eyelid closure. The conditioned stimulus was a 2,000-Hz, 90-dB, 500-ms tone; the unconditioned stimulus was a 4-psi, 150-ms air puff directed at the cornea; and the interstimulus interval was 350 ms, with a 60-s inte

Agility training enhances motor temporal precision by reweighting spinal phase-locked commissural inhibition.

Agile motor action requires rapid switching between motor states while maintaining stability. Because motor output combines fast and slow muscle fibers with distinct kinetics, prolonged slow-fiber activation can broaden burst envelopes and blur within-cycle transitions, limiting temporal precision. Here, we show that agility training improves locomotor timing by selectively compressing the activity of slow motor neurons through enhancing commissural inhibition. In adult zebrafish, training increased locomotor stability and reshaped cycle structure in vivo, shortening the contraction phase whil

Personality, Performance, and Corticosterone in White-Footed Mice.

AbstractPrevious small rodent studies report a negative correlation between exploration and locomotor performance. In other words, individuals that are more exploratory during a novel environment test run more slowly on a racetrack during a forced-exercise test. Given that measuring both exploration and sprint speed involves stress (novelty, open space, stimuli to prompt running), glucocorticoid hormones may play a role in the negative exploration-speed relationship. We repeatedly measured exploration, sprint speed, and blood corticosterone levels in 51 captive female white-footed mice. As in

Estimation of genetic parameters of body conformation and racing performance traits in Yili horses.

The Yili horse is a riding-type breed that has been continuously bred independently in China. The genetics of body conformation and racing performance traits need to be comprehensively considered in making breeding decisions. This study is the first to estimate the genetic parameters of 13 body conformation and racing performance traits in Yili horses using a linear model. In total, 9937 body conformation and 2576 race records of 9100 Yili horses obtained from 1993 to 2022 were reviewed. The results showed that heritability estimates of body measurement traits were medium to high, ranging from
