Medicine ball throw distance weighted with height-to-mass ratio aligns with other physical fitness tasks.

The traditional Medicine Ball Throw (MBTT) for assessing upper-extremity explosive strength inherently favours heavier and taller participants. We designed three alternative indices to adjust for this anthropometric bias: (1) multiplying MBTT by the height-to-mass ratio (MBTA1), (2) dividing MBTT by the product of mass and height (MBTA2), and (3) dividing MBTT by the body mass index (MBTA3). Using age- and sex-adjusted LMS-based z-scores from two independent cohorts (821 children, aged 8.3 ± 0.7 years; 354 adolescents, aged 14.4 ± 2.2 years), we compared the variants' alignment with the concav

Development of the Physical Distancing Scale for COVID-19 Avoidance (PDS-C19©) in immunocompromised and non-immunocompromised individuals and its validation in the EAGLE Study.

BACKGROUND: Many immunocompromised individuals continue to practice physical distancing behaviors to avoid severe COVID-19 outcomes. To measure the intensity of these physical distancing behaviors, we aimed to develop and validate a standardized metric across age groups: the Physical Distancing Scale for COVID-19 Avoidance (PDS-C19©). METHODOLOGY: PDS-C19 development involved content scoping, initial draft PDS-C19 design phase, and exploratory testing (via asynchronous online forums). Psychometric properties (structural validity, reliability, and construct validity) of the PDS-C19 were evalua

Physical Distancing Due to COVID-19 Disrupts Sexual Behaviors Among Gay and Bisexual Men in Australia: Implications for Trends in HIV and Other Sexually Transmissible Infections.

INTRODUCTION: In March 2020, Australian state and federal governments introduced physical distancing measures alongside widespread testing to combat COVID-19. These measures may decrease people's sexual contacts and thus reduce the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs). We investigated the impact of physical distancing measures due to COVID-19 on the sexual behavior of gay and bisexual men in Australia. METHODS: Between April 4, 2020, and April 29, 2020, 940 participants in an ongoing cohort study responded to questions to measure changes in sexual behaviors d

The Impact of Controlled Physical Training with Hydrotherapy on Changes in Swelling and Claudication Distance in Patients with Atherosclerotic Ischemia of the Lower Limbs.

BACKGROUND: Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) often experience intermittent claudication. It is manifested by pain typically seen in the distal part of the legs during walking, which impairs the ability to walk, limits physical activity and results in lower health-related quality of life. It often leads to chronic ischemic pain, ulceration and even amputation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of controlled physical training and whirlpool massage on changes in circuits, range of motion and distance of claudication in people with atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower l

Better close than far away: Physical distance modulates multiple retro-cues effect in working memory.

The retro-cue paradigm is frequently used to study how attention interacts with visual working memory (WM). In this paradigm, a single cue presented during the retention interval directs attention to a memorized item, thereby improving subsequent memory performance for that item. Recent studies have extended this approach to investigate the multiple retro-cues effect, i.e., simultaneously presenting two or more retro-cues to enhance memory performance for multiple cued items. However, the capacity limit and neural basis of this effect remain unclear. Through four experiments, we revealed that

Defying distance: exercise providers' perspectives on remote physical activity supports for older adults: a mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Many older adults encounter barriers to participating in physical activity programs, often due to cost, accessibility, and transportation challenges. Implementing feasible and effective remote support strategies may enhance their physical activity participation. This mixed-methods study examines exercise providers' use of remote supports for physical activity among older adults, their perceived effectiveness, and barriers and facilitators to adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. METHODS: Exercise providers (≥18 years) completed a web-based survey (June-September 2020

Plasmodium falciparum genomic surveillance reveals spatial and temporal trends, association of genetic and physical distance, and household clustering.

Molecular epidemiology using genomic data can help identify relationships between malaria parasite population structure, malaria transmission intensity, and ultimately help generate actionable data to assess the effectiveness of malaria control strategies. Genomic data, coupled with geographic information systems data, can further identify clusters or hotspots of malaria transmission, parasite genetic and spatial connectivity, and parasite movement by human or mosquito mobility over time and space. In this study, we performed longitudinal genomic surveillance in a cohort of 70 participants ove

Adherence to implementing physical distancing and other COVID-19 preventive measures and its barriers among adults in Arba Minch town, Southwest Ethiopia: A lesson learned from the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Globally, as of March 2024, the number of confirmed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and deaths were over 774 million and seven million, respectively. Since there are no proven treatment in place against the disease, controlling strategy mainly rely on preventive measures. However, data on the extent of implementing physical distancing and other preventive measures during the pandemic of COVID-19 were inadequate in the study setting. This study is, therefore, documenting these gaps among people in Arba Minch town, South Ethiopia. METHODS: We conducted a community-based cr

Characterization of the Cattle TCR β CDR3 Repertoire and Gene Rearrangement Bias Influenced by Recombination Signal Sequences and Physical Distance.

Cattle exhibit distinct immune system features, including ultra-long IGH CDR3 regions, which are characteristic of their adaptive immunity. However, less is known about the diversity and functional aspects of their T cell receptor (TCR) β chain complementarity-determining region 3 (CDR3) repertoire. This study aimed to investigate the features of the TCR β chain CDR3 repertoire in cattle using high throughput sequencing. The spleen tissue samples were collected from cattle, and the TCR β CDR3 repertoires were constructed using high-throughput sequencing. Key attributes analyzed included CDR3 l

Brief measures of physical and psychological distance to suicide methods as correlates and predictors of suicide risk: A multi-study prospective investigation.

A core component of suicide risk assessment and management is determining one's physical proximity to specific suicide means and counseling individuals to minimize their physical access to these means. However, this approach ignores other potentially relevant parameters, such as perceptions of how psychologically close/distant one feels to a particular suicide method. The present study examined the degree to which novel, brief measures of physical and psychological distance to suicide methods were associated with and prospectively predicted suicide-related outcomes at (1) two-month follow-up a

Physical Distance Between the Helipad and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory: A Cause for Delay in Helicopter Air Ambulance Activated Patients with STEMI.

OBJECTIVE: Decreased time to cardiac catheterization improves survival and limits cardiac tissue damage in ST Elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Emergency medical services delays account for half of treatment delays in STEMI. Helicopter air ambulance (HAA) can reduce the time to percutaneous intervention (PCI), and therefore may reduce mortality. The impact of physical distance between the PCI hospital helipad and the PCI laboratory on the door-to-door-to-balloon time (DDBT) for cardiac intervention in STEMI patients transported through HAA from remote community hospitals to PCI faciliti

Metabolic hormones, grazing behaviour, offspring physical distance and productive response of beef cow grazing at two herbage allowances.

Herbage allowance (HA) management during gestation-lactation cycle of cows grazing native grasslands improves pregnancy rates and calves' weaning weight records. Those improvements were associated with greater herbage mass, and better body condition score (BCS) and metabolic status of the cows, which could affect grazing and maternal behaviour, particularly when temporary suckling restriction (TSR) and flushing (FL) is applied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of HA during the gestation-lactation period on cows' and calves' liveweight (LW), BCS, milk yield, insulin, IGF-1

See your friends close and your enemies closer: social identity and identity threat shape the representation of physical distance.

Three studies demonstrated that collective identity and identity threat shape representations of the physical world. In Study 1, New York Yankees fans estimated Fenway Park, the stadium of a threatening out-group (but not Camden Yards, the stadium of a neutral out-group) to be closer than did non-Yankees fans. In Study 2, the authors manipulated identity threat among people affiliated (or not) with New York University (NYU). When Columbia University was portrayed as threatening to NYU, NYU affiliates estimated Columbia as closer than did non-affiliates, compared with when Columbia was nonthrea
