The purpose of this paper is to describe physical function and performance scores and examine the relationships between measures of physical performance in older Black men with low back pain. The Mobility, Aging, Pain, and Disparities study used a cross-sectional, observational design to objectively measure physical performance on the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), the Back Performance Scale (BPS), and the 400-meter Walk Test along with subjective ratings of pain intensity in the past 24 hours. Sixty community-based Black men aged 61-87 (x̄= 70 ± 6) years had an average BPS score o

BACKGROUND: Vascular Cognitive Impairment, No Dementia (VCIND) is a key stage at which early intervention will delay or prevent dementia. The pathophysiology of VCIND posits that a lesion in a single location in the brain has the ability to disrupt brain networks, and the subsequent abnormal Functional Connectivity (FC) of brain networks leads to deficits in corresponding neurobehavioral domains. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that disrupted anterior cingulate cortex and striatal networks mediated the effects of Physical Activity (PA) on neurobehavioral function.
METHODS: In 27 patie

BACKGROUND: Muscle power is related to mobility function in older adults, and effective power production requires rapid neuromuscular activation. Accordingly, this study examines the association of neuromuscular activation rate with muscle performance in persons of different age and mobility function.
METHODS: Participants were recruited to three experimental groups: middle-aged healthy adults (MH), older healthy adults (OH), and older adults with mobility limitations (OML). OH and OML were primarily differentiated by performance on the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Muscle perfor

Loss of muscle mass and limitations in activity have been reported in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), even those who are otherwise asymptomatic. The extent to which factors other than muscle atrophy impair muscle performance has not been addressed in depth. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of neuromuscular activation of the knee extensors and ankle dorsiflexors of 27 men infected with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy and its relationship to muscle performance. The central activation ratio (CAR) was determined using superimposed electrical stim

This study aimed to compare lung function between farmers with and without post-COVID-19 and to examine the correlations between lung function parameters and participant characteristics. Eighty-four farmers were recruited and divided into two groups: those without a history of COVID-19 and those with post-COVID-19. Lung function, upper limb muscle strength, and muscular endurance were assessed using spirometry, hand grip strength, and the 1-min sit to stand test (1STS), respectively. There were no significant differences in demographic data between groups (P > 0.05). Farmers without post-COVID

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling (FoF) is a common concern in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Understanding whether and how FoF affects activities and participation is crucial for developing effective rehabilitation programs in individuals with MS.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between measures of FoF (degree of FoF and avoidance behavior due to FoF) and measures of activities and participation in ambulatory individuals with MS. We also aim to investigate whether avoidance behavior due to FoF is relevant beyond the effect of degree of FoF.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey-based d

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between physical fitness, executive function, and academic performance in children and adolescents. A total of 131 students (49% female) aged 10-15 years from a public school in Rio de Janeiro were assessed in executive functions (hearts and flowers, Corsi's block, and digit span tasks), academic performance (Portuguese, reading, math, and overall school grade), physical tests (touch test disc, agility, lower limb and upper limb explosive strength), and anthropometric measurements. Regression results showed that the comp

PURPOSE: The relationship of types of visual function to different aspects of physical function, especially strength and coordination, has been understudied, but delineation of these relationships could suggest potentially modifiable targets prior to the onset of disability.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of visual function (self-reported eyesight and eye disease, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity) and physical function tests in 877 older adults (mean age 76.36±5.01 years, 59.2% women, and 13.3% Black race). Cancer cachexia is a disorder characterized by involuntary weight loss and impaired physical performance. Decline in physical performance of patients with cachexia is associated with poor quality of life, and currently there are no effective pharmacological interventions that restore physical performance. Here we examine the effect of GDF15 neutralization in a mouse model of cancer-induced cachexia (TOV21G) that manifests weight loss and muscle function impairments. With comprehensive assessments, our results demonstrate that cachectic mice treated with the anti-GDF15 antibody mAB2 exhibit bod

BACKGROUND: Self-reported limitations in physical function often have only weak associations with measured performance on physical tests, suggesting that factors other than performance commonly influence self-reports. We tested if personal or health characteristics influenced self-reported limitations in three tasks, controlling for measured performance on these tasks.
METHODS: We used cross-sectional data on adults aged >/= 60 years (N = 5396) from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to examine the association between the repeated chair rise test and self-reported diff

Background/Objectives: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of mobility impairment in older adults, yet few studies have explored exergames (EXGs) as a complementary therapy for knee and/or hip OA (KOA/HOA). This study evaluated the effects of integrating EXGs into conventional therapy (CT) on functional mobility. Methods: Sixty participants were randomized into an EXG/CT group or a CT-only group. The interventions lasted 10 weeks (3 sessions/week), and the EXGs were selected from the interactive game Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo Switch®, Kyoto, Japan). Results: Functional mobility (Timed Up

Understanding the physical, functional, mental, and nutritional attributes of canoe polo athletes is essential for training and development. Forty-three canoe polo athletes (mean age: 21.54 ± 6.03) participated in the study and were assessed for: anthropometric measurements, exercise motivation, eating habits, adherence to the Mediterranean Diet, and physical and functional abilities. Correlation and multivariate analysis were conducted. Individual performance in a rowing task showed body mass index (β = 0.41) and female gender (β = 0.34) to be the strongest anthropometric predictors, whereas

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The prevalence of functional mobility limitations and falls is higher in people with dementia compared with cognitively healthy older adults, and both are associated with gait and motor impairments. The aims of this study were to examine concurrent validity of physical performance assessments and spatiotemporal gait measures in older adults with advanced dementia and to prospectively examine their relationship to functional mobility limitations and falls over a 4-month period.
METHODS: Thirty-one older adults living in dementia-specific assisted living residences parti

Few physical performance batteries exist that appropriately evaluate physical limitations in middle-aged adults. We aimed to develop a physical performance summary score that is appropriate for use in epidemiology studies of middle-aged adults using data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Function study, which assessed self-reported function (PROMIS-SF20a) and physical performance measures (gait speed, balance, lower body strength, grip strength, and cardiovascular endurance). The CARDIA Physical Performance (CAPP) score was developed using sex-specific quartile
