This study presents a framework for physical therapy through the course of Huntington disease (HD) which includes coordinated care plans with neurologists. HD is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder that leads to impaired strength and coordination and ultimately progressive loss of function. Interdisciplinary HD care teams provide patient-centered, comprehensive evaluations and make recommendations for pharmacologic, healthcare, and lifestyle interventions based on best available evidence. Physical therapists work to improve movement and mobility using specific therapeutic interventions and

U.S. military physical therapists have a proud history of providing medical care during operational deployments ranging from war to complex humanitarian emergencies. Regardless of austerity of environment or intensity of hostility, U.S. military physical therapists serve as autonomous providers, evaluating and treating service members with and without physician referral. This perspective article suggests that the versatility of U.S. military physical therapist practice enables them not only to diagnose musculoskeletal injuries but also to provide a wide range of definitive care and rehabilitat

Questionnaires were sent to 462 physical therapists in Edmonton, Canada, to determine the prevalence of work-related low back pain (LBP) and to characterize those who reported pain. Of the 311 (67.3%) valid questionnaires returned. 49.2% reported back pain due to work. The occurrence rates of work-related LBP among physical therapists in Edmonton was higher than that of the general population reported in Canada (27%), Great Britain (27%), and the United States (26-29%). There was no significant difference (p < or = 0.05) between those with and without work-related LBP. The initial onset of wor

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot is a common congenital foot deformity in children. The Ponseti method of serial casting has become the standard of care in clubfoot treatment. Clubfoot casting is performed in many centers by both orthopaedic surgeons and physical therapists (PTs); however, direct comparison of outcomes and complications of this treatment between these providers is limited. This study prospectively compared the outcomes of patients with clubfoot treated by these 2 groups of specialists.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and December 2014, all patients under the age of 12 months with a diagnos

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Home care physical therapists (PTs) are inconsistent regarding cognitive screening, possibly because screening tools were traditionally considered the domain of other home care disciplines, or because therapists perceive their dementia training to be inadequate. A cross sectional study was designed to survey home care therapists' attitudes and beliefs about the management of persons with dementia and to find out whether any specific cognitive tools or measures are currently used.
METHODS: A 5-point Likert-type survey was administered to home care PTs via an online surv

Healthcare workers, especially those with direct patient contact are amongst professions with the highest rate of workrelated musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), physical therapists (PTs) being one of them. Our objective was to review current knowledge relating to the prevalence, risk factors and prevention of WMSDs among PTs. Pubmed, Google Scholar and PEDro databases were searched for terms relating to WMSDs in PTs from inception to 2015. The prevalence of WMSDs among PTs was high, with lifetime prevalence reported as 55-91%, and 12-month prevalence ranges 40-91.3%, and the lower back as the

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Goal setting is an important aspect of any physical therapy program. It not only determines the focus of therapy but also determines discharge planning and equipment prescription. The effectiveness of goal setting is dependent on therapists' ability to predict patients' future mobility. The purpose of this study was to determine how accurately physical therapists can predict the future mobility of people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) at the time of admission to rehabilitation.
METHODS: A cohort observational study was undertaken in 2 SCI units in Sydney, Australia, w

BACKGROUND: Women with disabilities are at heightened risk of intimate partner violence, experiencing higher rates of physical and sexual violence than women without disabilities. Women with disabilities are also at risk of sustaining additional chronic injuries and debilitating conditions associated with intimate partner violence. Physical therapists strive to enhance the well-being and quality of life of individuals experiencing impairments, activity limitations, and/or participation restrictions due to physical health concerns. This professional focus places physical therapists in an import

BACKGROUND: The adoption of diaphragm and lung ultrasound (DLUS) by physiotherapists, physical therapists, and respiratory therapists ("therapists") to examine and assess the diaphragm and lungs continues to grow. The aim of this updated scoping review is to re-explore and re-collate the evidence around the adoption of DLUS by therapists.
METHODS: This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Data sources searched included AMED, EmCare, CINAHL, Embase, Medline, PubMed and Pedro. Grey literature sources were searched alongside communication with leading authors in the field. The Part

This paper offers a contemporary, evidence-based perspective on how point of care ultrasonography imaging (POCUS) has the potential to impact orthopedic and sports physical therapists' examination and treatment. Clinical use of POCUS has increased in medicine and is emerging in physical therapist practice. Greater affordability, portability, ease of use, and evidence supporting its' diagnostic value have contributed to increased use. Modern ultrasound devices have improved resolution allowing for the differentiation of anatomical structures. Physical therapists use POCUS in clinical practice a

BACKGROUND: Manual therapy (MT) is a widely utilized approach for managing musculoskeletal pain and functional disorders, particularly through joint mobilizations. Traditionally explained by immediate biomechanical processes, a paradigm shift has occurred in the last few decades, recognizing neurophysiological mechanisms as crucial contributors.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether this shift is also reflected by clinicians, this study explores the beliefs and perceptions of physical therapists regarding the mechanisms underlying MT through an online survey design. The focus was if dominantly peri

INTRODUCTION: Over the past 20 years, military medicine made great strides in the medical management of traumatically injured patients. Significant advancements were made in the treatment and rehabilitation after limb loss. These advancements can be attributed to the large number of complex patients presenting to military treatment facilities and the demand for medical professionals to provide care to patients with complex injuries and multiple traumatic amputations. The concern now is to maintain the skills needed to be prepared for the next conflict. To meet this demand, the Extremity Trauma

The most commonly reported vector-borne and tick-borne disease in the United States is Lyme disease. Individuals with Lyme disease may present with a wide array of symptoms with resultant musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiac manifestations that may cause them to seek physical therapist services. The symptoms may develop insidiously and with a variable presentation among individuals. Many persons with Lyme disease do not recall a tick bite or present with an erythema migrans rash, which is considered pathognomonic for the disease. Even if they do, they may fail to associate either with th

Concussion (also called mild traumatic brain injury) can occur across the lifespan. Excessive force to the head, either through direct impact or force transmission through the body and neck, is a concussive event. After a concussive event, there can be injury not only to the brain, but also to other structures such as the cervical spine and vestibular system. The clinical practice guideline published in the April 2020 issue of JOSPT outlines the role of physical therapy examination and management after a concussive event. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2020;50(4):176-177. doi:10.2519/jospt.2020.050
