BACKGROUND: Human scalp reveals a remarkable difference to hairy skin of other body regions. The structure of the scalp offers effective protection against water loss and contributes to thermoregulation due to significant vascularization. The scalp is innervated by the trigeminus nerve.
OBJECTIVES: The majority of the population complain about "sensitive" scalp. However, sensory, regional, ethnic or pathologic parameters contributing to "sensitive" scalp are largely unknown.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Quantitative sensory tests and superficial topical application test of irritant substances were

When Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mt. Everest in 1953, it was the culmination of many attempts beginning in 1921. Alexander Kellas had actually predicted as early as 1920 that the mountain could be climbed, but the extreme altitude of 8848 m with the consequent oxygen deprivation had foiled previous attempts. One reason for the success of the 1953 expedition was the work done by the British physiologist Griffith Pugh in 1952 when he studied many of the physiological factors at high altitude including the oxygen requirements. Seven years later, Pugh and Hillary teamed

Despite major advances in understanding the pathophysiology of hypertension and availability of effective and safe antihypertensive drugs, suboptimal blood pressure (BP) control is still the most important risk factor for cardiovascular mortality and is globally responsible for more than 7 million deaths annually. Short-term and long-term BP regulation involve the integrated actions of multiple cardiovascular, renal, neural, endocrine, and local tissue control systems. Clinical and experimental observations strongly support a central role for the kidneys in the long-term regulation of BP, and

The physiology of bone loss in aging women and men is largely explained by the effects of gonadal sex steroid deficiency on the skeleton. In women, estrogen deficiency is the main cause of early rapid postmenopausal bone loss, whereas hyperparathyroidism and vitamin D deficiency are thought to explain age-related bone loss later in life. Surprisingly, estrogen deficiency also plays a dominant role in the physiology of bone loss in aging men. Many other factors contribute to bone loss in aging women and men, including defective bone formation by aging osteoblasts, impairment of the growth hormo

"Autophagy" is a highly conserved pathway for degradation, by which wasted intracellular macromolecules are delivered to lysosomes, where they are degraded into biologically active monomers such as amino acids that are subsequently re-used to maintain cellular metabolic turnover and homeostasis. Recent genetic studies have shown that mice lacking an autophagy-related gene (Atg5 or Atg7) cannot survive longer than 12 h after birth because of nutrient shortage. Moreover, tissue-specific impairment of autophagy in central nervous system tissue causes massive loss of neurons, resulting in neurodeg

Cough is comprised of three phases (inspiratory, compressive and expiratory) and serves as a vital defensive mechanism for lung health. It prevents pulmonary aspiration, promotes ciliary activity and clears airway debris. The importance of an intact cough mechanism is reflected in the occurrence of pulmonary problems when cough is inefficient. Cough efficiency is dependent on physical/mechanical aspects (respiratory muscles, mucus, airway calibre and larynx) and integrity of the neurophysiological pathway of cough. The understanding of the latter has progressed significantly (albeit mostly in

Platelets are specialized blood cells that play central roles in physiologic and pathologic processes of hemostasis, inflammation, tumor metastasis, wound healing, and host defense. Activation of platelets is crucial for platelet function that includes a complex interplay of adhesion and signaling molecules. This article gives an overview of the activation processes involved in primary and secondary hemostasis, for example, platelet adhesion, platelet secretion, platelet aggregation, microvesicle formation, and clot retraction/stabilization. In addition, activated platelets are predominantly i

Dyssynchronous ventricular contraction, often associated with delayed electrical activation, contributes to worsened clinical status in patients with chronic dilated heart failure. There are three levels of impaired electromechanical synchrony that can be recognized and potentially improved with pacing methods. Prolonged atrioventricular (AV) delay can promote presystolic mitral regurgitation and impaired left ventricular (LV) filling. Interventricular conduction delay with right ventricular (RV) activation preceding LV activation often occurs in the setting of left bundle branch block or RV a

The pituitary has been called the master gland of the body because of its central role in governing homeostasis, maintaining the reproductive cycle, and directing the activity of other glands. Housed in the sella turcica of the sphenoid bone at the base of the skull, it has important anatomic relations with the hypothalamus, visual pathways, cavernous sinus, carotid artery, and cranial nerves. The gland originates from two discrete parts of the developing embryo. Rathke's pouch, a dorsal evagination of the stomodeum, forms the anterior and intermediate lobes. The infundibulum, a ventral extens

Wound healing is a complicated process that recruits at least 4 distinct cell types. Though the process is continuous, it is commonly referred to as occurring in "phases." The main phases of wound healing include coagulation, which begins immediately after injury; inflammation, which initiates shortly thereafter; a migratory and proliferative process, which begins within days and includes the major processes of healing; and a remodeling process, which may last for up to a year and is responsible for scar tissue formation and development of new skin. Wound healing is affected by several factors

Magnesium has an established role in obstetrics and an evolving role in other clinical areas, in particular cardiology. Many of the effects involving magnesium are still a matter of controversy. Over the next decade, it is likely that improvements in the measurement of magnesium, a clearer understanding of the mechanisms of its actions and further results of clinical studies will help to elucidate its role, both in terms of treating deficiency and as a pharmacological agent.

Since 1990, the number of papers on the biological basis of consciousness has increased sharply. Some aspects of consciousness, such as its localization in the brain structure, relation of conscious and unconscious processes, selective attention and the waking state may be analyzed by objective means. According to the model proposed by Dennett and Kinsbourne (1990) and called Multiple Drafts Model, there is no isolated module in the brain structure where consciousness is located. Conscious experience is a serial stream of activity integrating various sources of information. All conscious proce

Cytokines are soluble factors that play a critical role in mediating cell to cell interactions within skeletal tissues. These effects are mediated by paracrine, autocrine, and juxtacrine mechanisms. There are also examples in which the cytokines can function in an endocrine fashion. The regulatory functions of the cytokines are performed throughout life, beginning with bone growth and development and continuing in the mature organism, in which bone remodeling is regulated. The cytokines can be grouped into distinct families based on their principal biologic activity and cell target. However, t

Circadian rhythms are repeated psychophysiological patterns of the body. They are endogenously controlled and environmentally modified and are therefore a sociopsychophysiological phenomenon. Subjectivity of circadian rhythms occurs with relation to the individual circadian parameters and also within different individuals. The hypothalamus appears to be the master clock synchronizing the free-running rhythms of individual circadian control centres. Internal synchronisation occurs when the rhythms are within their homeostatic ranges.

Amylin is a 37-amino acid peptide first isolated, purified, and characterized from the amyloid deposits in the pancrease of type 2 diabetics. It is synthesized and secreted primarily from pancreatic beta cells along with insulin. The ability of amylin to potently reduce insulin-stimulated incorporation of glucose into glycogen in skeletal muscle requires both an intact 2Cys-7Cys disulfide bond and a COOH-terminal amide. Amylin has structural and functional relationships to two other messenger proteins, calcitonin and CGRP. Amylin has relatively potent calcitonin-like activity on bone metabolis

Blood coagulation forms part of an integrated series of haemostatic reactions, involving plasma, platelet, and vascular components. Platelets adhere to damaged endothelium or to subendothelium under the influence of adhesive proteins, and when activated they aggregate and expose binding sites for coagulation factors. Platelets, therefore, act as vehicles to concentrate and potentiate coagulation reactions on the damaged vessels. Following interaction of the 'contact' factors XII and XI, the coagulation protease zymogens undergo sequential activation, resulting in the generation of thrombin, th

Olfactory reception is mediated by olfactory receptor cells located in the olfactory epithelium. These cells are bipolar neurons that extend a dendrite toward the nasal lumen and an axon toward the olfactory bulb in the brain. The dendrite possesses a group of apical cilia embedded in mucus. Odorant recognition and signal transduction are initiated at the membranes of these chemosensory cilia and culminate in excitation of the olfactory receptor cell. Differential activation by odorants of distinct groups of olfactory receptor cells generates patterns of neuronal activity that encode odor qual

Recreational diving is a popular sport, although human ability to stay in and under water is severely limited physiologically. An understanding of these limitations enhances safety and enjoyment of sports diving. Breath-hold diving involves head-out water immersion, apnoea and submersion, exercise, cold stress, and pressure exposure. Each of these components, by itself, elicits prominent and specific physiological effects. Combination of these factors produces a unique and interesting physiological response generally known as diving reflex. Humans display weak diving responses, but exhibit no
