Effects of Picrorrhiza rhizoma water extracts on the subacute liver damages induced by carbon tetrachloride.

The hepatoprotective activity of Picrorrhiza rhizoma (PR) water extract was evaluated on carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced subacute hepatic damage, induced by subcutaneous injection of CCl(4) (0.15 mL/kg of body weight) in pure olive oil (7.92%, vol/vol) three times a week for 10 weeks. Animals were sacrificed 10 weeks after oral administration of PR extracts at 50, 100, or 200 mg/kg or silymarin at 100 mg/kg, which were administered simultaneously with CCl(4); changes in body weight, liver weight, and serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were ob

Projected climate change impacts on habitat suitability of threatened medicinal plants in Himachal Pradesh, Western Himalaya: an ensemble species distribution modelling approach.

Climate change is expected to profoundly influence high-elevation Himalayan ecosystems, where steep environmental gradients and narrow climatic tolerances render alpine plant communities particularly sensitive to environmental changes. Many threatened Himalayan medicinal plants occur near alpine-sub-alpine ecotones associated with upper forest limits, and shifts in their distribution may reflect broader ecosystem responses to climate change. Anticipating such range dynamics is essential for biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management in climate-sensitive mountain landscapes.

Picroside II protects against cholestatic liver injury possibly through activation of farnesoid X receptor.

BACKGROUD: Cholestasis, accompanied by the accumulation of bile acids in body, may ultimately cause liver failure and cirrhosis. There have been limited therapies for cholesteric disorders. Therefore, development of appropriate therapeutic drugs for cholestasis is required. Picroside II is a bioactive component isolated from Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora Pennell, its mechanistic contributions to the anti-cholestasis effect have not been fully elucidated, especially the role of picroside II on bile acid homeostasis via nuclear receptors remains unclear. PURPOSE: This study was designed to inves

Influence of apocynin on cardiac remodeling in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important mechanism leading to diabetic cardiomyopathy. Apocynin, a drug isolated from the herb Picrorhiza kurroa, is considered an antioxidant agent by inhibiting NADPH oxidase activity and improving ROS scavenging. This study analyzed the influence of apocynin on cardiac remodeling in diabetic rats. METHODS: Six-month-old male Wistar rats were assigned into 4 groups: control (CTL, n = 15), control + apocynin (CTL + APO, n = 20), diabetes (DM, n = 20), and diabetes + apocynin (DM + APO, n = 20). Hepatoprotective effects of Artemisiae capillaris herba and Picrorrhiza rhizoma combinations on carbon tetrachloride-induced subacute liver damage in rats.

The hepatoprotective properties of Artemisiae capillaris herba (AC) and Picrorrhiza rhizoma (PR) are well known. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal composition of AC and PR mixtures for better complimentary or alternative regimens in reducing the level of hepatic fibrosis. Ten weeks of carbon tetrachloride injections caused subacute hepatic damage, manifested as significantly less body weight gain and hepatic protein content, and a higher liver weight, serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels, hepatic malondialdehyde (an index for lipid peroxidation)

Molecular mechanisms underlying methotrexate-induced intestinal injury and protective strategies.

Methotrexate (MTX) is a folic acid reductase inhibitor that manages various malignancies as well as immune-mediated inflammatory chronic diseases. Despite being frequently prescribed, MTX's severe multiple toxicities can occasionally limit its therapeutic potential. Intestinal toxicity is a severe adverse effect associated with the administration of MTX, and patients are significantly burdened by MTX-provoked intestinal mucositis. However, the mechanism of such intestinal toxicity is not entirely understood, mechanistic studies demonstrated oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions as key fa
