Bone lid technique with piezosurgery to preserve inferior alveolar nerve.

The inferior alveolar nerve is at risk during surgical removal of impacted mandibular teeth and excision of benign tumors of mandible. Manual and/or mechanical instruments used in the close proximity of delicate structures do not allow the control of the cutting depth and can damage these structures by accidental contact. Piezoelectric surgery is a new and innovative bone surgery technique using the microvibrations of special scalpels at ultrasonic frequency so therefore soft tissue will not be damaged even upon accidental contact with the cutting tip. This article presents an alternative tech

Comparison of Piezosurgery and Conventional Osteotomy for Orbital Hypertelorism Surgical Correction.

The purpose of this study was to compare the safety and effect of piezosurgery with conventional osteotomy in a box-shifting procedure for orbital hypertelorism (ORH) correction surgery. This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical record of 10 ORH patients aged from 5 to 12 years, and they were second-degree ORH with an interorbital distance (IOD) of 35 to 37.8 mm. Three of them received the osteotomy with piezosurgery (the piezosurgery group), whereas the other 7 patients received osteotomy with the conventional osteotomy method (the control group). They were compared with age and preope

A comparative analysis of piezosurgery and oscillating saw for balanced orbital decompression.

Introduction: Different minimally invasive surgical approaches to the orbit allow individualized bone resection to reduce proptosis and decompress the optic nerve in patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO). This study aims to compare piezosurgery to an oscillating saw used to resect bone from the lateral orbital wall. Methods: In a retrospective study, we analyzed balanced orbital decompressions performed on 174 patients (318 cases) with GO. An oscillating saw was used in 165 cases (saw group) and piezosurgery in 153 cases (piezo group). Peri- and postoperative complications, reduction of propt

A Case Series of the Use of Piezosurgery Instrument for Minimally Invasive Metopic Suturectomy.

BACKGROUND: Minimal invasive suturectomy is one of the many surgical approaches to treat isolated single suture craniosynostosis. This approach can be technically challenging in metopic craniosynostosis given the narrow corridor and steep angle of the forehead. New instruments such as the Piezosurgery device (Mectron) have the potential to improve the ability to safely perform minimal invasive surgery in metopic craniosynostosis. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the safety and efficacy of Piezosurgery technology in minimal invasive suturectomy for nonsyndromic metopic suture craniosynostosis and to

Piezosurgery for the lingual split technique in mandibular third molar removal: a suggestion.

BACKGROUND: The lingual split technique is a surgical procedure for extraction of impacted mandibular third molar throughout a lingual approach. The main disadvantage of this technique is the high rate of temporary lingual nerve injury mainly because of the trauma induced by the lingual flap retraction. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the use of piezosurgery in performing the lingual cortical plate osteotomy of the third molar alveolar process. METHODS: Surgical procedure was performed under general anesthesia, and it lasted approximately 60 minutes. After the buccal and lingual full-

Use of the piezosurgery technique for cutting bones in the autotransplantation of unerupted third molars.

Autotransplantation is a well-known method used in oral surgery. However, risk of failure, most commonly resulting from root resorption of the transplanted tooth or ankylosis, is quite high. Piezosurgery with specific device tip vibration frequencies enables selective tissue cutting, and therefore, tooth buds or teeth can easily be removed from bones with little injury to periodontal fibers or bud follicles.

Autogenous bone grafts in the esthetic zone: optimizing the procedure using piezosurgery.

Soft and hard tissue defects pose a therapeutic challenge in modern implant dentistry. There are a multitude of surgical techniques available, and it is necessary to match the problem with the solution. This report describes the reconstruction of the alveolar ridge in the esthetic zone with the help of autogenous bone blocks harvested from the chin that were shaped to fit and stabilized at the recipient site. The procedures were performed using Piezosurgery, which made it possible to introduce surgical modifications and had a significant impact on the accuracy of the procedure. An observation

Neuronavigation Applied to Piezosurgery: Toward Robotic Image-Aided Craniotomy? A Technical Note.

BACKGROUND: Although simple in its concept, craniotomy can still cause serious consequences to the patient. A recent alternative to standard techniques (i.e., perforator and craniotome) is represented by piezosurgery (PS), which exploits a microvibration-emitting blade that cuts the bone directly from the outer surface of the skull. Although PS has been demonstrated to decrease complications, dural lacerations and neurovascular injuries are still possible from inadvertent penetration of the inner tabula. Modern neuronavigation systems can provide the surgeon with the possibility to track the i

Slice Functional Condylectomy and Piezosurgery: A Proposal in Unilateral Condylar Hyperplasia Treatment.

Condylar hyperplasia is a temporomandibular joint progressive disease characterized by an excessive growth of the mandibular condyle. Condylar overgrowth represents one of the most common causes of facial asymmetry in early adulthood. To date, there is not a clearly established origin of the disease: genetic, traumatic, infective, vascular, and functional factors are involved hypotheses. Clinically, condylar hyperplasia presentation is characterized by an asymmetry of the lower third of the face, deviation of the chin, inclination of the labial line and malocclusion. Several treatments have be

Resection of costal exostosis using piezosurgery associated with uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopy.

We report a case of a 35-year-old woman affected by costal exostosis, originating from the posterior arc of the left fifth rib, who complained of a persistent intractable neuralgia in the left T5 dermatome. Both pain and the risk of visceral injury led us to resect exostosis. The procedure was performed using a uniportal videothoracoscopic approach without additional incisions. For bone resection, we used Piezosurgery, a soft tissue-sparing system based on ultrasound vibrations. Piezosurgery allowed the complete resection of exostosis without injuring the intercostal nerve and vessels. The his
