The relationship of grip and three-point pinch strength to ball velocity and elbow varus torque in high school pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Hand and forearm strength play an essential role in modulating and controlling forces across the elbow during pitching. In particular, grip and pinch strength reflect functional capacity of the flexor-pronator mass, which contributes to both performance and dynamic stability of the elbow. While diminished grip strength is often used clinically to monitor recovery following shoulder and elbow injury, values in adolescent pitchers are lacking. Furthermore, the relationship between grip and pinch strength with ball velocity and elbow varus torque remains poorly defined. METHODS: Thir

Tripod pinch strength and thumb opposition are the major determinants of manual dexterity in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A.

BACKGROUND: Clinical features of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) include slowly progressive distal muscle weakness, atrophy and sensory loss. Upper-limb involvement results in reduced manual dexterity interfering with the execution of daily activities. OBJECTIVE: To identify which hand function impairments are determinants of manual dexterity in CMT1A. METHODS: In a cross-sectional, observational study, hand function (strength, mobility and sensory function) and manual dexterity (Sollerman hand function test) were evaluated in adults with CMT1A. Multiple linear regression analysi

The effect of the involvement of the dominant or non-dominant hand on grip/pinch strengths and the Levine score in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Levine questionnaire is a disease-oriented instrument developed for outcome measurement of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) management. The objective of this study was to compare Levine scores in patients with unilateral CTS, involving the dominant or non-dominant hand, before and after carpal tunnel release. Records of 144 patients, 126 women (87%) and 18 men (13%) aged a mean of 58 years with unilateral CTS, treated operatively, were analysed. The dominant hand was involved in 100 patients (69%), the non-dominant in 44 (31%). The parameters were analysed pre-operatively, and at 1 and 6 month

Handgrip and Pinch Grip Strength as Functional Indicators of Pediatric Malnutrition and Early Response to Nutritional Therapy: A Preliminary Single-Center Study.

Background/Objectives: Pediatric malnutrition is associated with loss of muscle mass and impaired physical function. While anthropometric measurements are widely used for diagnosis, functional indicators that reflect early changes in nutritional status are limited in children. Handgrip strength has been proposed as a simple and objective marker of muscle function; however, pediatric data remain scarce. Methods: In this prospective controlled study, 55 children aged 3-17 years diagnosed with malnutrition and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were evaluated. Anthropometric measurements an

Impact of key pinch strength on patient preference for inflatable penile prosthesis: a prospective study comparing Coloplast™ and AMS™ models.

Our purpose was to determine if key pinch strength is predictive of patient preference for a single IPP model among three currently available models (Coloplast™ Titan, Coloplast™ Titan Touch, and the Boston Scientific AMS 700™). We prospectively recruited men without penile prostheses over 65 years old from our urology clinic. Demographic and medical history were recorded. To measure key pinch strength study participants squeezed a dynamometer between their thumb and index finger while seated with their arm resting at 90°; the strongest of three attempts was recorded. Participants were asked t

A simulation analysis of the combined effects of muscle strength and surgical tensioning on lateral pinch force following brachioradialis to flexor pollicis longus transfer.

Biomechanical simulations of tendon transfers performed following tetraplegia suggest that surgical tensioning influences clinical outcomes. However, previous studies have focused on the biomechanical properties of only the transferred muscle. We developed simulations of the tetraplegic upper limb following transfer of the brachioradialis (BR) to the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) to examine the influence of residual upper limb strength on predictions of post-operative transferred muscle function. Our simulations included the transfer, ECRB, ECRL, the three heads of the triceps, brachialis, and

Tendon Transfer versus Nerve Transfer for the Reconstruction of Key Pinch and Grip Strength in Isolated High Traumatic Injuries of the Ulnar Nerve: A Systematic Review.

Background: Primary repair for traumatic injuries to the ulnar nerve alone does not always restore satisfactory hand function, particularly in injuries above the elbow where the long distances for regeneration limit motor reinnervation. Reductions in key pinch and grip strength are some of the main complaints. Tendon transfers have traditionally been used to improve key pinch and grip strength as a late salvage where primary nerve regeneration has run its course. Nerve transfers have been proposed as an alternative procedure and may be offered early to augment recovery, lengthen the window for

Restoration of Pinch Strength After Traumatic Ulnar Nerve Injury: Outcomes of Transfer of the Opponens Pollicis Branch to the Terminal Division of the Deep Branch of the Ulnar Nerve.

PURPOSE: Ulnar nerve injury causes weak pinch strength through paralysis of the first dorsal interosseus and adductor pollicis muscles. Current reconstructive strategies provide variable reanimation of these muscles. It has been suggested that nerve transfer of the opponens pollicis (OPB) motor branch to the terminal division of the deep branch of the ulnar nerve (TDDBUN) may successfully restore pinch strength. The true effectiveness of this intervention remains unknown as there are few cases in the literature with all originating from a single author. METHODS: We retrospectively identified

Transverse carpal ligament: its effect on flexor tendon excursion, morphologic changes of the carpal canal, and on pinch and grip strengths after open carpal tunnel release.

A three-part study is described that examines postoperative weakness after open carpal tunnel release and investigates the role of the transverse carpal ligament in the digital flexor pulley system. The effect of this ligament on flexor tendon excursion is evaluated in a cadaver study. Magnetic resonance imaging analysis is used to determine whether division of the transverse carpal ligament promotes volar migration of the median nerve and flexor tendons. Finally, the effects of ligament division and various methods of transverse carpal ligament reconstruction on the return of grip and pinch s

A comparative assessment of static muscular strength among female operative's working in different handicraft occupations in India.

An ergonomic assessment of static muscular strength like hand grip-and pinch strength in handicraft occupation was made. In total, 170 female participants were selected for the case-control study, out of which 120 handicraft and 50 office workers were examined as exposed and control groups. Their maximum static handgrip- and pinch strength were measured using hand and pinch dynamometers. We analyze our findings to indicate static muscular strength varies significantly due to repetitive use of hand tools. The decrement in pinch grip strength was evident due to long cycle repetitive pinching mov

Relationship between manual dexterity and left-right asymmetry of anatomical and functional properties of corticofugal tracts revealed by T2-weighted brain images.

The corticofugal tracts (CFT) are key agents of upper limb motor function. Although the tracts form high-intensity regions relative to surrounding tissue in T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (T2WI), the precise relations of signal intensities of the left and right CFT regions to hand function are unknown. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the different signal intensities between the left and right CFT signify clinically important differences of hand motor function. Eleven right-handed and eleven left-handed healthy volunteers participated in the study. Based on horizontal T2WI estimates,

Association of Motor Unit Number and Size Estimation With Muscle Thickness and Strength in Healthy Young, Middle-Aged, and Older Adults.

PURPOSE: Although age-related declines in muscle mass and strength are believed to result from changes in motor unit number and size, the association of motor unit number and size with muscle mass and strength in healthy individuals remains unclear. We aim to examine the association of motor unit number estimation (MUNE) and motor unit size estimation (MUSE) of abductor pollicis brevis (APB) with muscle thickness of APB and maximal pinch-grip strength among young, middle-aged, and older adults. METHODS: Forty-eight young adults (20-39 years; young), 89 middle-aged adults (40-59 years; middle-
