Tear break-up time in eyes with pterygia and pingueculae in Ibadan.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet (UV) rays and chronic irritation to dust have been implicated in the pathogenesis of degenerative conditions of the cornea and conjunctiva like pterygium and pinguecula. It has been postulated that exposure to these environmental factors cause corneal and conjunctival drying by disruption of the tear film. While some researchers have found tear film dysfunction in eyes with pterygia and pingueculae, others have found no such abnormalities. The differences in findings may be due to different methods of investigation, or differences based on geography and climate. STUDY

Case Report: A Peculiar Pinguecula? A Surprising IgG4-Related Conjunctival Lesion.

INTRODUCTION: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a chronic immune-mediated fibroinflammatory condition that may involve multiple organs but rarely presents as an isolated conjunctival lesion. Ocular surface involvement can mimic benign inflammatory conditions, leading to diagnostic delay. We report a rare case of isolated conjunctival IgG4-RD initially misdiagnosed as recurrent pingueculitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old female presented with a gelatinous, cystic mass on the bulbar conjunctiva. Comprehensive ophthalmic examination and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) rev

Prevalence of pinguecula in Greenland and in Copenhagen, and its relation to pterygium and spheroid degeneration.

The prevalence of pinguecula has been studied by slit lamp examination of 659 Eskimos in South Greenland and 810 Caucasians in Copenhagen. The overall prevalence was found to be 56 per cent in Greenland against 41 per cent in Copenhagen (P less than 0.001) and to rise with increasing age, though with a fall after the age of 60 among Greenland women. Pingueculae (measured by their vertical height) are largest among Greenlanders, and larger in males than in females. They increase in size with increasing age. They are generally located nasally in Greenlanders and temporally in Copenhageners. The

p53 expression and relation to human papillomavirus infection in pingueculae, pterygia, and limbal tumors.

BACKGROUND: The tumor suppressor gene p53 is expressed without apoptosis in the limbal basal stem cells of all pterygia and limbal tumors and most pingueculae from which these growths seem to originate. Oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPVs) have been found in pterygia and limbal tumors, and HPV and p53 overexpression commonly coexist in oropharyngeal and penile carcinomas. OBJECTIVE: To search for HPV DNA as a cofactor in the development of pingueculae, pterygia, and limbal tumors. METHODS: We examined specimens--1 of pinguecula, 13 of pterygia (7 primary, 1 recurrent, 1 with dysplasia, an

P53 expression in altered limbal basal cells of pingueculae, pterygia, and limbal tumors.

PURPOSE: We previously discovered that the pathogenesis of pterygia was due to a vimentin-expressing, altered limbal epithelial basal cell, the pterygium cell. Since UV radiation epidemiologically correlates as the etiologic agent for pterygia and limbal tumors and is mutagenic for the p53 gene, our goal was to search for p53 gene mutations immunohistochemically in the altered limbal basal cells of these growths and of pingueculae from which they seem to originate. METHODS: Longitudinal serial sections through six pingueculae, 14 primary and five recurrent pterygia, and five limbal tumors wer

Transcriptome Analysis of Pterygium and Pinguecula Reveals Evidence of Genomic Instability Associated with Chronic Inflammation.

Solar damage due to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is implicated in the development of two proliferative lesions of the ocular surface: pterygium and pinguecula. Pterygium and pinguecula specimens were collected, along with adjacent healthy conjunctiva specimens. RNA was extracted and sequenced. Pairwise comparisons were made of differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Computational methods were used for analysis. Transcripts from 18,630 genes were identified. Comparison of two subgroups of pterygium specimens uncovered evidence of genomic instability associated with inflammation and the immune res

Significance of Fuchs Flecks in Patients With Pterygium/Pinguecula: Earliest Indicator of Ultraviolet Light Damage.

PURPOSE: Fuchs flecks (FFs) have been previously identified at the leading edge of pterygia and may represent collections of epithelial stem-like cells that give rise to this condition. This study aims to evaluate the clinical significance of FFs in patients with ocular surface disorders, such as pterygium and pinguecula, by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM). METHODS: This study is a Single-center, retrospective, observational case series of 40 eyes from 20 patients with clinical diagnoses of pinguecula or pterygium, or both. The Improvement of Dry Eye Symptoms after Pinguecula Excision and Conjunctival Autograft with Fibrin Glue.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between pinguecula excision and subsequent improvement in dry eye syndrome. METHODS: We included 30 consecutive patients with primary nasal pinguecula and dry eye symptoms undergoing ocular surgery for the first time. Criteria for pinguecula excision surgery were nasal location, yellowish color, and protrusion of conjunctiva at least 2 times thicker than adjacent normal conjunctiva as measured by anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Our primary outcomes were 3-month postoperative changes in tear film breakup time (TBUT), Schirmer test, and a dry

Genome-Wide Association Study of Pterygium Versus Pinguecula Identifies Loci Associated with Lesion-Type Divergence.

PURPOSE: Both pterygium and pinguecula are ocular surface lesions associated with shared environmental risk factors, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure. However, most pingueculae do not progress to pterygium, and while prior genetic studies suggest a genetic contribution to pterygium susceptibility, the difficulty of controlling for shared UV exposure has been a limiting factor. Here, we use array-based data and whole genome sequencing (WGS)-based data from the multiancestry All of Us Research Platform to perform a case-case genome-wide association study directly comparing individua

Presence and possible significance of immunohistochemically demonstrable metallothionein expression in pterygium versus pinguecula and normal conjunctiva.

PURPOSE: To investigate metallothionein (MT) expression in pterygium, pinguecula and normal conjunctiva and define its possible significance in this area of the eye. In order to further elucidate the mechanism of MT expression we correlated it with lymphocyte subpopulations (T4, T8), macrophages (CD68), Langerhans' cells (S100) and the proliferation-associated indices (PCNA, Ki67). METHODS: Eighty-five surgically excised pterygia, 15 pingueculae and 20 normal conjunctivae were immunohistochemically studied by the avidin-biotin (ABC) method.
