Essential oil of Piper purusanum C.DC (Piperaceae) and its main sesquiterpenes: biodefensives against malaria and dengue vectors, without lethal effect on non-target aquatic fauna.

The mosquito vectors of the genera Aedes and Anopheles present resistance to several commercial insecticides, which are also toxic to non-predator targets. On the other hand, essential oils are a promising source of insecticides. Thus, in this work, the essential oil from the leaves of Piper purusanum was characterized by gas chromatography-based approaches and evaluated as biodefensive against malaria and dengue vectors. The main compounds of P. purusanum essential oil were β-caryophyllene (57.05%), α-humulene (14.50%), and germacrene D (8.20%). The essential oil inhibited egg hatching (7.6 ±

Assessment of the efficacy of Piper methysticum (Micrembryeae: Piperaceae) as a bioinsecticide, and/or spinosad combined with attractive plant volatiles for a novel lure and kill strategy against Bactrocera tryoni (Diptera: Tephritidae) in laboratory.

The Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a crop pest of global economic importance because of its wide range of hosts and its invasiveness capacities. To develop a novel integrated and sustainable crop protection, we have investigated the insecticidal properties of different varieties of kava (Piper methysticum [Frost]) extracted by two methods and the attractive effects of six plant volatiles identified from B. tryoni host plants to female, mated or not. We did not identify any significant insecticidal effect of the traditional Pacific kava plant at th

Larvicidal mechanism of the rare sesquiterpene ishwarol B from Piper alatipetiolatum (Piperaceae) against Aedes aegypti, Anopheles darlingi, and Culex quinquefasciatus (Culicidae): oxidative damage, defense enzyme modulation, and acetylcholinesterase inhibition.

Dengue, Oropouche, lymphatic filariasis, and malaria remain serious public health problems in Brazil, transmitted by Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Anopheles darlingi resistant to pyrethroid insecticides. As alternatives, plant-derived natural insecticides have gained attention for their potential. In this study, we evaluated ishwarol B for its larvicidal activity and explored its mechanism of action against these mosquitoes. Ishwarol B exhibited larvicidal activity against all larvae (LC50 from 19.57 to 26.23 μg/mL) and a residual effect of approximately 50 % observed, accompanied

Phenolic antibacterials from Piper betle in the prevention of halitosis.

Piper betle L. (Piperaceae) leaves which are traditionally used in India and China in the prevention of oral malodor was examined by bioassay-guided fractionation to yield allylpyrocatechol (APC) as the major active principle which showed promising activity against obligate oral anaerobes responsible for halitosis. The biological studies with APC indicated that the potential to reduce methylmercaptan and hydrogen sulfide was mainly due to the anti-microbial activity as established using dynamic in vitro models.

Antifungal activity of extracts of some plants used in Brazilian traditional medicine against the pathogenic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic granulomatous disease caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis Almeida (Onygenales) that requires 1-2 years of treatment. In the absence of drug therapy, the disease is usually fatal, highlighting the need for the identification of safer, novel, and more effective antifungal compounds. With this need in mind, several plants employed in Brazilian traditional medicine were assayed on P. brasiliensis and murine macrophages. Extracts were prepared from 10 plant species: Inga spp. Mill. (Leguminosae), Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (Anacardiaceae), Punica g

Schistosoma mansoni: In vitro schistosomicidal activity of piplartine.

Schistosomiasis is one of the world's greatly neglected tropical diseases, and its control is largely dependent on a single drug, praziquantel. Here, we report the in vitro effect of piplartine, an amide isolated from Piper tuberculatum (Piperaceae), on Schistosoma mansoni adult worms. A piplartine concentration of 15.8 μM reduced the motor activity of worms and caused their death within 24h in a RPMI 1640 medium. Similarly, the highest sub-lethal concentration of piplartine (6.3 μM) caused a 75% reduction in egg production in spite of coupling. Additionally, piplartine induced morphological c
