[Two cases of auditory disturbance caused by carbamazepine].

Two cases of auditory disturbance caused by carbamazepine are reported. Patient 1, a 9-year-old boy with benign Rolandic epilepsy, developed impairment of pitch perception one day after administration of carbamazepine. Patient 2, a 33-year-old female with glossopharyngeal neuralgia, developed impairment of pitch perception several hours after administration of carbamazepine, complaining that the perceived sounds became lower than previously by a semitone. Her pitch perception recovered soon after the cessation of carbamazepine. The carbamazepine-induced disturbance in pitch perception may be m

Impaired perception of harmonic complexity in congenital amusia: a case study.

This study investigates whether congenital amusia (an inability to perceive music from birth) also impairs the perception of musical qualities that do not rely on fine-grained pitch discrimination. We established that G.G. (64-year-old male, age-typical hearing) met the criteria of congenital amusia and demonstrated music-specific deficits (e.g., language processing, intonation, prosody, fine-grained pitch processing, pitch discrimination, identification of discrepant tones and direction of pitch for tones in a series, pitch discrimination within scale segments, predictability of tone sequence

Incongruent pitch cues are associated with increased activation and functional connectivity in the frontal areas.

Pitch plays a crucial role in music and speech perception. Pitch perception is characterized by multiple perceptual dimensions, such as pitch height and chroma. Information provided by auditory signals that are related to these perceptual dimensions can be either congruent or incongruent. To create conflicting cues for pitch perception, we modified Shepard tones by varying the pitch height and pitch chroma dimensions in either the same or opposite directions. Our behavioral data showed that most listeners judged pitch changes based on pitch chroma, instead of pitch height, when incongruent inf

Pitch-Responsive Cortical Regions in Congenital Amusia.

Congenital amusia is a lifelong deficit in music perception thought to reflect an underlying impairment in the perception and memory of pitch. The neural basis of amusic impairments is actively debated. Some prior studies have suggested that amusia stems from impaired connectivity between auditory and frontal cortex. However, it remains possible that impairments in pitch coding within auditory cortex also contribute to the disorder, in part because prior studies have not measured responses from the cortical regions most implicated in pitch perception in normal individuals. We addressed this qu

A Neurophysiological Study of Musical Pitch Identification in Mandarin-Speaking Cochlear Implant Users.

Music perception in cochlear implant (CI) users is far from satisfactory, not only because of the technological limitations of current CI devices but also due to the neurophysiological alterations that generally accompany deafness. Early behavioral studies revealed that similar mechanisms underlie musical and lexical pitch perception in CI-based electric hearing. Although neurophysiological studies of the musical pitch perception of English-speaking CI users are actively ongoing, little such research has been conducted with Mandarin-speaking CI users; as Mandarin is a tonal language, these ind

Music perception and its correlation with auditory speech perception in pediatric Mandarin-speaking cochlear implant users.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CI) help regain perception of sound for patients with sensorineural hearing loss. The ability to recognize music pitch may be crucial for recognizing and producing speech for Mandarin. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study aims to search for possible influencing factors of music perception and correlations between music perception and auditory speech abilities among prelingually deaf pediatric Mandarin-speaking CI users. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Music perception of 24 pediatric CI users and 12 normal hearing children was measured using the MuSIC test. Auditory speech percep

Perceptual pitch deficits coexist with pitch production difficulties in music but not Mandarin speech.

Congenital amusia is a musical disorder that mainly affects pitch perception. Among Mandarin speakers, some amusics also have difficulties in processing lexical tones (tone agnosics). To examine to what extent these perceptual deficits may be related to pitch production impairments in music and Mandarin speech, eight amusics, eight tone agnosics, and 12 age- and IQ-matched normal native Mandarin speakers were asked to imitate music note sequences and Mandarin words of comparable lengths. The results indicated that both the amusics and tone agnosics underperformed the controls on musical pitch

The Relationship Between Tinnitus Pitch, Audiogram Edge Frequency, and Auditory Stream Segregation Abilities in Individuals With Tinnitus.

Purpose Around 80%-93% of the individuals with tinnitus have hearing loss. Researchers have found that tinnitus pitch was related to the frequencies of hearing loss, but unclear about the relationship between tinnitus pitch and audiometry edge frequency. The comorbidity of tinnitus and speech perception in noise problems had also been reported, but the relationship between tinnitus pitch and speech perception in noise had seldom been investigated. This study was designed to estimate the relationship between tinnitus pitch, audiogram edge frequency, and speech perception in noise. The speech pe

Deficits in congenital amusia: Pitch, music, speech, and beyond.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits of music perception and production, which are related to altered pitch processing. The present study used a wide variety of tasks to test potential patterns of processing impairment in individuals with congenital amusia (N = 18) in comparison to matched controls (N = 19), notably classical pitch processing tests (i.e., pitch change detection, pitch direction of change identification, and pitch short-term memory tasks) together with tasks assessing other aspects of pitch-related auditory cognition, such as emotion reco

Enhanced Pitch Discrimination for Cochlear Implant Users with a New Haptic Neuroprosthetic.

The cochlear implant (CI) is the most widely used neuroprosthesis, recovering hearing for more than half a million severely-to-profoundly hearing-impaired people. However, CIs still have significant limitations, with users having severely impaired pitch perception. Pitch is critical to speech understanding (particularly in noise), to separating different sounds in complex acoustic environments, and to music enjoyment. In recent decades, researchers have attempted to overcome shortcomings in CIs by improving implant technology and surgical techniques, but with limited success. In the current st

Relating pitch awareness to phonemic awareness in children: implications for tone-deafness and dyslexia.

Language and music are complex cognitive and neural functions that rely on awareness of one's own sound productions. Information on the awareness of vocal pitch, and its relation to phonemic awareness which is crucial for learning to read, will be important for understanding the relationship between tone-deafness and developmental language disorders such as dyslexia. Here we show that phonemic awareness skills are positively correlated with pitch perception-production skills in children. Children between the ages of seven and nine were tested on pitch perception and production, phonemic awaren

[Contribution of the study of singing in tune in musically non-expert subjects: importance of short term memory of the pitch (19 to 28 year-old subjects)].

INTRODUCTION: In the singing, which requires precise knowledge of the relevant musical code in use, accuracy of intonation plays a central role. Singing in tune requires to perceive pitch precisely and to memorize it before planning and executing the accurate vocal motion, which allows the exact emission of the correct pitch. OBJECTIVES: Our work investigated the role of short term memory of pitch on singing accuracy. MATERIAL AND METHOD: For that purpose, the experimental protocol of Deutsch (1970) was adapted for a perception and a production task. Participants were selected for their sing

Sex stereotypes influence adults' perception of babies' cries.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread evidence that gender stereotypes influence human parental behavior, their potential effects on adults' perception of babies' cries have been overlooked. In particular, whether adult listeners overgeneralize the sex dimorphism that characterizes the voice of adult speakers (men are lower-pitched than women) to their perception of babies' cries has not been investigated. METHODS: We used playback experiments combining natural and re-synthesised cries of 3 month-old babies to investigate whether the interindividual variation in the fundamental frequency (pitch) of

Correlation between the frequency difference limen and an index based on principal component analysis of the frequency-following response of normal hearing listeners.

Subcortical phase locking tends to reflect performance differences in tasks related to pitch perception across different types of populations. Enhancement or attenuation in its strength may correspond to population excellence or deficiency in pitch perception. However, it is still unclear whether differences in perceptual capability among individuals with normal hearing can be predicted by subcortical phase locking. In this study, we examined the brain-behavior relationship between frequency-following responses (FFRs) evoked by pure/sweeping tones and frequency difference limens (FDLs). FFRs a

Dissociation of tone merger and congenital amusia in Hong Kong Cantonese.

While the issue of individual variation has been widely studied in second language learning or processing, it is less well understood how perceptual and musical aptitude differences can explain individual variation in native speech processing. In the current study, we make use of tone merger in Hong Kong Cantonese, an ongoing sound change that concerns the merging of tones in perception, production or both in a portion of native speakers, to examine the possible relationship between tone merger and musical and pitch abilities. Although a previous study has reported the occurrence of tone merge

Music perception in acquired prosopagnosia.

BACKGROUND: Acquired prosopagnosia is often associated with other deficits such as dyschromatopsia and topographagnosia, from damage to adjacent perceptual networks. A recent study showed that some subjects with developmental prosopagnosia also have congenital amusia, but problems with music perception have not been described with the acquired variant. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine if music perception was also impaired in subjects with acquired prosopagnosia, and if so, its anatomic correlate. METHOD: We studied eight subjects with acquired prosopagnosia, all of whom had extensive neu

[Patient Satisfaction after Pitch Elevation and Development of a Therapy Algorithm].

Objective: Voice feminization is an important step in the therapy of male-to-female transsexualism. Approaches are conservative voice therapy and surgical interventions. The most powerful parameter of gender perception is the fundamental frequency. Besides the vocal pitch, there are other parameters influencing gender perception of a voice, e. g. intonation, prosody or formant frequencies. Material and methods: In 21 male to female transgender persons after surgical elevation of the vocal pitch the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (FLZ) and a new addendum were us

Pitch, periodicity, and auditory organization.

The perception of pitch forms the basis of musical melody and harmony. It is also among the most precise of all our human senses, and with imagination, this precision can be used experimentally to investigate the functioning of the auditory system. This tutorial presents auditory demonstrations from the zoo of pitch effects: pitch shifts, noise pitch, virtual pitch, dichotic pitch, and the pitches of things that are not there at all. It introduces models of auditory processing, derived from contemporary psychoacoustics and auditory physiology, and tests these models against the experimental ef

Binaural Pitch Fusion in Bilateral Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Binaural pitch fusion is the fusion of stimuli that evoke different pitches between the ears into a single auditory image. Individuals who use hearing aids or bimodal cochlear implants (CIs) experience abnormally broad binaural pitch fusion, such that sounds differing in pitch by as much as 3-4 octaves are fused across ears, leading to spectral averaging and speech perception interference. The goal of this study was to determine if adult bilateral CI users also experience broad binaural pitch fusion. DESIGN: Stimuli were pulse trains delivered to individual electrodes. Fusion rang
