Hypothalamic pituitary adrenal and autonomic nervous system biomarkers of stress and tobacco relapse: Review of the research.

Tobacco smoking is a risk factor for countless diseases, and smoking relapse remains a major public health concern. Subjective reports of stress by smokers are a common theme for relapse, however, the role of objective stress-related biomarkers in predicting tobacco relapse risk has been less studied. The aim of this manuscript was to review existing literature on the connection between biomarkers of stress and smoking relapse. Overall, trends indicate that blunted hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) responses to acute stress, larger reductions in HPA biomarkers during the initial days of abs

Effects of very low-calorie ketogenic diet on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

BACKGROUND: The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a neuroendocrine system involved in controlling stress responses in humans under physiological and pathological conditions; cortisol is the main hormone produced by the HPA axis. It is known that calorie restriction acts as a stressor and can lead to an increase in cortisol production. Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is a complex endocrine network regulating blood pressure and hydrosaline metabolism, whose final hormonal effector is aldosterone. RAAS activation is linked to cardiometabolic diseases, such as heart failure

The role of mineralocorticoid receptors in the circadian activity of the human hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system: effect of age.

The purpose of this study was to test the role of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) in the circadian activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system of elderly healthy subjects. Nine elderly subjects (age: 66.2 +/- 7.7 years) were treated for 8 days with both the MR antagonist spironolactone and a placebo in a randomized, single-blind cross-over order. After treatment, we studied the circadian profiles of ACTH, plasma cortisol and saliva cortisol. No significant change in ACTH concentrations emerged. However, there were significant increases in circadian minimal (52.4 +/- 26.7 ve

[Morphofunctional changes in the pituitary-adrenal-gonadal system of Wistar rats exposed long to ethanol at free options].

Experiments were carried out on 40 adult male Wistar rats weighing 220-240 g, which used 15% ethanol or drinking water at free options during 2 months. Ten intact males using the drinking water ad libitum served as controls. Morphofunctional activity was morphologically and morphometrically studied in the anterior pituitary, adrenals, and testicles. The spermogram of epididymal sperm was examined. The plasma levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, corticosterone, testosterone, and estradiol were measured by enzyme immunoassay. The rats using 15% ethanol for 2 months were o

Electroacupuncture Ameliorates Hypothalamic‒Pituitary‒Adrenal Axis Dysfunction Induced by Surgical Trauma in Mice Through the Hypothalamic Oxytocin System.

Electroacupuncture (EA) can effectively reduce surgical stress reactions and promote postoperative recovery, but the mechanisms remain unclear. The present study aims to examine the effects of EA on the hyperactivity of the hypothalamic‒pituitary‒adrenal (HPA) axis and investigate its potential mechanisms. Male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to partial hepatectomy (HT). The results showed that HT increased the concentrations of corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), corticosterone (CORT), and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in the peripheral blood and upregulated the expression of CRH and glu

Involvement of the hypothalamic--pituitary--adrenal/gonadal axis and the peripheral nervous system in rheumatoid arthritis: viewpoint based on a systemic pathogenetic role.

From the compendium presented above, the following statements become evident: 1) Inappropriately low secretion of cortisol in relation to inflammation is a typical feature of the inflammatory disease in patients with RA. 2) The secretion of adrenal androgens is significantly reduced, which is a problem in postmenopausal women and elderly men due to a lack of downstream sex hormones. 3) Serum levels of testosterone are markedly reduced in RA. 4) Sympathetic nerve fibers are markedly reduced in the synovial tissue of patients with RA, whereas proinflammatory sensory fibers (substance P) are pres

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system regulation in recently detoxified alcoholics is not altered by one week of treatment with acamprosate.

BACKGROUND: Acamprosate decreases relapse rates in alcohol-dependent patients by approximately 10-20% within the first year after detoxification. Psychological stress is a major risk fac-tor for relapse and is associated with activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) system. In recently detoxified alcoholics, the HPA system is dysregulated with non-suppression of cortisol after dexamethasone administration. We therefore investigated whether acamprosate normalizes HPA hyperactivity in alcoholics within the first 3 weeks of abstinence, employing a combined dexamethasone/corti

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity and its relationship to the autonomic nervous system in patients with psychogenic erectile dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Psychological stress and its two stress response systems, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the autonomic nervous system (ANS), are closely related to psychogenic erectile dysfunction (pED). However, the analyses of perceived stress and stress systems in pED patients need to be more in-depth, especially the interactions between them. METHODS: Our study included 75 patients with pEDs and 75 healthy men. The International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) and the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) were used for assessing the severity of ED and perceived stre

Psychological stress induces dysfunction in the lacrimal gland through the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Chronic psychosocial stress is increasingly recognized as a key risk factor for dry eye disease, potentially because of its disruption of the circadian transcriptome and lacrimal gland function, which impacts eye health. In this study, we test this hypothesis by using two mouse models (high platform and restraint experiments) of psychological stress and report that both models uniquely alter the circadian transcriptome and signaling pathways of the lacrimal gland. Psychosocial stress significantly affects the normal rhythmic oscillations of extraorbital lacrimal gland (ELG) immune cell traffic

[Status of the pituitary-adrenal and cholinergic system of patients with a pain syndrome in spinal osteochondrosis before and after a course of reflexotherapy].

The pituitary-adrenal and cholinergic systems were studied in 57 patients with chronic pain related to vertebral osteochondrosis before and after an acupuncture course. The degree of the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture (EAP) was found to correlate with the nature of changes in the level of the spontaneous secretion of aldosterone and intensity of the process of acetylcholine (AC) release. Most patients in whom the treatment was followed by the recovery of the physiologic level of the initially depressed secretion of aldosterone and a clear-cut decrease in the initially elevated AC con

Brain beta-endorphin and other opioids are involved in restraint stress-induced stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the sympathetic nervous system, and the adrenal medulla in the rat.

Opiates and opioids have complex effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and they stimulate the sympathetic nervous system. This study was designed to clarify the role of brain beta-endorphin in the mechanism by which stress increases plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), epinephrine (E), and norepinephrine (NE). Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of beta-endorphin to rats significantly increased plasma ACTH levels at doses of 0.09, 0.3, and 1.5 nmol, and plasma E and NE levels at doses of 0.3 and 1.5 nmol. The rise of plasma ACTH, E, and NE levels by 0.

Maternal hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system activity and stress during pregnancy: Effects on gestational age and infant's anthropometric measures at birth.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal maternal stress might be a risk for the developing fetus and may have long-lasting effects on child and adult vulnerability to somatic and psychiatric disease. Over-exposure of the unborn to excess glucocorticoids and subsequent alteration of fetal development is hypothesized to be one of the key mechanisms linking prenatal stress with negative child outcome. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study, mothers-to-be (n = 405) in late pregnancy (36.8 ± 1.9 weeks of gestational age) and their singleton neonates were studied. We investigated the impact of different pren

The cochlea as an independent neuroendocrine organ: expression and possible roles of a local hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis-equivalent signaling system.

A key property possessed by the mammalian cochlea is its ability to dynamically alter its own sensitivity. Because hair cells and ganglion cells are prone to damage following exposure to loud sound, extant mechanisms limiting cochlear damage include modulation involving both the mechanical (via outer hair cell motility) and neural signaling (via inner hair cell-ganglion cell synapses) steps of peripheral auditory processing. Feedback systems such as that embodied by the olivocochlear system can alter sensitivity, but respond only after stimulus encoding, allowing potentially damaging sounds to

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and autonomic nervous system reactivity in children prenatally exposed to maternal depression: A systematic review of prospective studies.

Depression is a common condition affecting up to 20% of all pregnant women, and is associated with subsequent developmental and behavioral problems in children, such as conduct disorder and ADHD. One proposed mechanism underlying these associations is modification of the fetal hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA)-axis and the autonomic nervous system (ANS), resulting in altered responses to stress. This review examined the evidence regarding altered HPA-axis and ANS reactivity in children prenatally exposed to high maternal depressive symptoms. A systematic search was conducted in the electron

Functional sex differences ('sexual diergism') of central nervous system cholinergic systems, vasopressin, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in mammals: a selective review.

Sexual dimorphism of the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) has been widely documented. Morphological sex differences in brain areas underlie sex differences in function. To distinguish sex differences in physiological function from underlying sexual dimorphisms, we use the term, sexual diergism, to encompass differences in function between males and females. Whereas the influence of sex hormones on CNS morphological characteristics and function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis has been well-documented, little is known about sexual diergism of CNS control of the hypothalamic-pitu
