Assessing the quality of life in infants with deformational plagiocephaly.

This was a parent-reported outcome study on the impact of helmet therapy on the quality of life of infants with deformational plagiocephaly and their caregivers. Using survey-based analysis, we compared the quality of life in infants with deformational plagiocephaly with a cohort of their healthy peers. In addition, we compared infant quality of life before and after helmet therapy to evaluate the impact of this mainstay therapy for deformational plagiocephaly. Our results demonstrated that infants with plagiocephaly and their caregivers had a significantly decreased quality of life compared w

Posterior remodeling flap for posterior plagiocephaly.

INTRODUCTION: Nonsynostotic posterior plagiocephaly has become the most common skull deformation since pediatricians have suggested the supine position for the newborns to reduce the risk of sudden death. Prevention of such a "positional" deformation or its management once it has occurred is mainly based on physical maneuvers such as physiotherapy and active positional corrective measures. SELECTION CRITERIA: Surgical correction, however, may be suggested in rare cases where deformation of the skull is so severe or the referral of the child is so late that physical corrective treatment cannot

A classification of plagiocephaly utilizing a three-dimensional computer analysis of cranial base landmarks.

Plagiocephaly is a term commonly used to describe congenital forehead asymmetry. Previous classification systems based on the various etiologies of dysmorphic crania have been used in an effort to categorize the patients into groups and to assist in treatment planning. The system most commonly used today was described by Bruneteau and Mulliken in 1992. The authors separated frontal plagiocephaly into three types: synostotic, compensational, and deformational. The present study was undertaken in order to define a simple system for classifying plagiocephaly based on Bruneteau and Mulliken's syst

Non-surgical management of posterior positional plagiocephaly: orthotics versus repositioning.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate from the literature, the evidence of comparative efficiency of non-surgical treatments (orthotics or head repositioning therapy) in posterior positional plagiocephaly. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Systematic review from scientific articles (original cohort studies and review of literature), published in French or in English, searched on five online literature data bases, comparing non-chirurgical treatments (repositioning and orthotics therapy) for deformational plagiocephaly. A standardized method guidelines (Critical Review Form-Quantitative Studies) has been used. RESULTS: On

Deformational plagiocephaly: diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

The "Back to Sleep" campaign has dramatically decreased the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome; however, its sequelae of deformational plagiocephaly have today reached epidemic proportions. In the last decade, we have learned to distinguish deformational plagiocephaly clinically from craniosynostosis, thereby preventing its unnecessary surgical correction. Primary care providers must increasingly be aware of this condition and, in turn, educate new parents about its prevention. Should preventative measures fail and infants develop persistent sleep patterns that result in craniofacial de

The functional manual therapy intervention in infants with non-synostotic plagiocephaly: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to document the evolution of cranial asymmetries in infants with signs of nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly (NSOP) who underwent to many functional manual therapy treatments (in addition to the standard positioning recommendations); as well as to determine the feasibility of this methodology to conduct outcome research investigating the impact of this intervention for infants with NSOP. METHODS: This is a pilot clinical standardization project using pre-post design in which 10 infants participated. Nine infants presented an initial Oblique Diameter Di

Cranial growth unrestricted during treatment of deformational plagiocephaly.

OBJECTIVES: The Dynamic Orthotic Cranioplasty (DOC) Band(TM) is a cranial orthosis used to treat deformational plagiocephaly. The ability of this device to redirect growth and thus, improve craniofacial asymmetry has raised concerns regarding the potential restriction of cranial growth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth of the head during correction of plagiocephaly. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 190 children: 81 females (42. 6%) and 109 males (57.4%) All patients had been diagnosed with nonsynostotic plagiocephaly, did not have other significant medical conditions

Parental Education for the Prevention of Plagiocephaly.

INTRODUCTION: The American Academy of Pediatrics Back-to-Sleep Campaign significantly reduced infant mortality from sudden infant death syndrome. As a result of prolonged supine positioning, the incidence of deformational plagiocephaly has also risen 5-fold since its adoption. We aimed to improve the current educational paradigm for new parents with the goal of reducing the incidence of plagiocephaly within the confines of the Back-to-Sleep Campaign. We hypothesized that the early addition of plagiocephaly focused education for parents would reduce cephalic index, the ratio of head width to le

Computer-assisted craniometric evaluation for diagnosis and follow-up of craniofacial asymmetries: SymMetric v. 1.0.

PURPOSE: The current assessment of patients with craniofacial asymmetries is accomplished by physical examination, anamnesis and radiological imaging. We propose a semi-automated, computer-assisted craniofacial evaluation (SymMetric v 1.0) based on orthogonal photography of the patient's head in 3 positions. The system is simple, low-cost, no-radiation or special resources needed. Although it does not substitute CT in cases of doubt between craniosynostosis and positional plagiocephaly, multiple numeric evaluations indicate regional deformities and severity of the asymmetry, which can help in

Safety and efficacy of independent allied healthcare professionals in the assessment and management of plagiocephaly patients.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of positional plagiocephaly has increased significantly over the last two decades, which has caused a service delivery challenge for pediatric neurosurgeons. As a potential solution to the long waitlists for abnormal head shape, a plagiocephaly clinic was established at BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) in Vancouver, Canada. This clinic was supervised by an occupational therapist who had been trained by a neurosurgeon to independently assess and manage patients with a referring diagnosis of positional plagiocephaly. OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficiency of the BCCH Pla

Denominator of Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index: Choosing Between Longer and Shorter Diagonal Lengths.

Since it was proposed in this journal in 2001, the cranial vault asymmetry index (CVAI) has been an important parameter for assessing cranial shape. However, different publications currently use different variables in the denominator of the CVAI formula. We thus investigated the use of long and short diagonal lengths as variables in the denominator of the CVAI formula. We searched the databases of PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus for articles published between 2016 and 2022 that cited the original work article of CVAI. Articles were included if they were written in English and if the denomin
