Plant stress hormones suppress the proliferation and induce apoptosis in human cancer cells.

Cellular stressors induce various outcomes including inhibition of cell proliferation and cell death. Sodium salicylate (SA), a plant stress hormone, can suppress the proliferation or cause apoptosis in certain mammalian cancer cells. Plant stress hormones are activators of cellular responses, including cell death, to diverse stress situations in plants. Thus, we hypothesized that plant stress hormones share the ability to adversely affect cancer cells. We found that the plant stress hormone SA suppressed proliferation of lymphoblastic leukemia, prostate, breast and melanoma human cancer cells

Foam Cells: The Origin of Formation and Target for Plant-derived Bioactive Compounds.

Foam cells play a crucial role in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis, a condition marked by the development and growth of plaques that narrow blood vessel lumens. This narrowing can prevent normal blood flow and, in severe cases, lead to plaque rupture and blood clot formation, which can cause stroke or myocardial infarction. The origin of foam cells is diverse, arising from monocytes, vascular smooth muscle cells, stem/progenitor cells, and dendritic and endothelial cells. In their attempt to eliminate excess lipoproteins and cholesterol, foam cells inadvertently contribute to

Mechanobiology of the cell wall - insights from tip-growing plant and fungal cells.

The cell wall (CW) is a thin and rigid layer encasing the membrane of all plant and fungal cells. It ensures mechanical integrity by bearing mechanical stresses derived from large cytoplasmic turgor pressure, contacts with growing neighbors or growth within restricted spaces. The CW is made of polysaccharides and proteins, but is dynamic in nature, changing composition and geometry during growth, reproduction or infection. Such continuous and often rapid remodeling entails risks of enhanced stress and consequent damages or fractures, raising the question of how the CW detects and measures surf

Glycerophosphocholine metabolism in higher plant cells. Evidence of a new glyceryl-phosphodiester phosphodiesterase.

Glycerophosphocholine (GroPCho) is a diester that accumulates in different physiological processes leading to phospholipid remodeling. However, very little is known about its metabolism in higher plant cells. (31)P-Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and biochemical analyses performed on carrot (Daucus carota) cells fed with GroPCho revealed the existence of an extracellular GroPCho phosphodiesterase. This enzymatic activity splits GroPCho into sn-glycerol-3-phosphate and free choline. In vivo, sn-glycerol-3-phosphate is further hydrolyzed into glycerol and inorganic phosphate by acid phos

Expression of early genes in light-induced chloroplast differentiation of cultured plant cells.

The objective of this study was to identify genes, preferentially of the plastid, which are rapidly expressed during the initial phase of blue-light-induced chloroplast development in suspension-cultured cells (Chenopodium rubrum L.) and to analyse the encoded proteins. A cDNA library (lambda gt 10) was constructed using total RNA from plastid preparations of dark-grown cells exposed to blue light for 3, 6 and 12 h. By differential screening, at least three clones were identified which correspond to rapidly light-induced plastid genes. For these and a number of nuclear genes represented by oth

Cell cycle reprogramming in plant symbiotic and pathogenic interactions.

Intracellular plant-microbe interactions rely on host-derived interface membranes: as sites for reciprocal nutrient and signal exchange during symbiosis, or as conduits for asymmetrical nutrient acquisition and effector delivery by pathogens. Sustaining these dynamic structures places substantial metabolic and vesicular trafficking demands on host cells. This review examines how cell cycle reprogramming may help plants meet these demands. During plant-pathogen interactions, biotrophic pathogens can reprogram host cell cycle pathways to establish metabolically favorable niches, whereas plant im

Single-Cell Insights into Medicinal Plant Development and Metabolism.

Medicinal plants are major sources of therapeutic natural products, yet the cell-type-specific organization that governs metabolite biosynthesis, transport, and storage remains imperfectly resolved by organ-level omics. This review synthesizes studies published up to June 2026 that used single-cell, single-nucleus, spatial, metabolomic, and epigenomic approaches to medicinal plant systems, following a PRISMA-guided literature search across PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and CNKI. Emerging evidence shows that specialized metabolism is organized through discrete and often rare cell populations,

3D measurement of cell thickness and its dynamics in plants.

A novel and efficient method was developed to accurately measure thickness in 3D of many cells from a confocal stack, as well as to track changes in cell thickness overtime. Plant cells and organs are three-dimensional objects with a certain thickness. Among basic geometric parameters (length, width, depth/thickness), cell thickness is less accurately and comprehensively measured, probably because it cannot be directly seen. The current methods of cell thickness quantification have some limitations, such as measuring only from a cross-section, not accounting for the directionality of biologica

Quantum Calculations on Plant Cell Wall Component Interactions.

Density functional theory calculations were performed to assess the relative interaction energies of plant cell wall components: cellulose, xylan, lignin and pectin. Monomeric and tetramer linear molecules were allowed to interact in four different configurations for each pair of compounds. The M05-2X exchange-correlation functional which implicitly accounts for short- and mid-range dispersion was compared against MP2 and RI-MP2 to assess the reliability of the former for modeling van der Waals forces between these PCW components. Solvation effects were examined by modeling the interactions in

Centrality of host cell death in plant-microbe interactions.

Programmed cell death (PCD) is essential for proper growth, development, and cellular homeostasis in all eukaryotes. The regulation of PCD is of central importance in plant-microbe interactions; notably, PCD and features associated with PCD are observed in many host resistance responses. Conversely, pathogen induction of inappropriate cell death in the host results in a susceptible phenotype and disease. Thus, the party in control of PCD has a distinct advantage in these battles. PCD processes appear to be of ancient origin, as indicated by the fact that many features of cell death strategy ar

Interaction of the CdSe quantum dots with plant cell walls.

There is an increasing application of quantum dots (QDs) in plant science, as markers for the cells or their cell walls (CWs). In a plant cell the CW is a first target place for external agents. We studied interaction of CdSe QDs with CWs isolated from a conifer -Picea omorika (Panč) Purkynĕ branch. Binding of CdSe QDs was followed by using fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence and FT-IR spectroscopy. The aim of the study was to see whether the QDs induce structural changes in the CW, as well as to find out which kind of interactions between QDs and CWs occur and to which particular constituen

Hypersensitivity to DNA damage in plant stem cell niches.

The growing apices of plants contain stem cells that continually produce tissues, which, in the shoot, include the germline. These stem cell populations remain active throughout the plant's life, which can last for centuries, and are particularly exposed to environmental hazards that cause DNA damage and mutations. It is not known whether plants have mechanisms to safeguard the genome specifically in these crucial cell populations. Here, we show that root and shoot stem cells and their early descendants are selectively killed by mild treatment with radiomimetic drugs, x-rays, or mutations that

Host cell modulation by human, animal and plant pathogens.

Members of the alpha-proteobacteria display a broad range of interactions with higher eukaryotes. Some are pathogens of humans, such as Rickettsia and Bartonella that are associated with diseases like epidemic typhus, trench fever, cat scratch disease and bacillary angiomatosis. Others like the Brucella cause abortions in pregnant animals. Yet other species have evolved elaborate interactions with plants; in this group we find both plant symbionts and parasites. Despite radically different host preferences, extreme genome size variations and the absence of toxin genes, similarities in survival

A plant DNMT3 induces non-CG methylation and affects gene expression in human cells.

CG methylation is the predominant form of DNA methylation across eukaryotes, whereas non-CG methylation in vertebrates is largely restricted to neurons and embryonic stem cells and is mediated by DNMT3 enzymes. In contrast, plant DNMT3 homologs catalyze extensive non-CG methylation across diverse tissues. To test whether a plant DNMT3 can establish non-CG methylation and influence transcription in human cells, we expressed Physcomitrium patens DNMT3b (PpDNMT3) in HEK293 cells, which lack this modification. PpDNMT3 induced robust, genome-wide non-CG methylation in transiently and stably transfe

Selective Cytotoxic and Redox-Associated Effects of Plant-Derived Terpenoids in Human Glioblastoma Cells.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary malignant brain tumor and remains highly resistant to standard therapies. Because redox homeostasis is frequently altered in GBM, small natural products that affect viability together with oxidative-stress endpoints may provide promising leads for further development. Here, we evaluated the terpenoids α-pinene, farnesene, carvone, and terpinolene for cytotoxicity and selectivity in human glioblastoma (U87MG) cells compared with primary human dermal fibroblasts (HDFa). Cell viability was assessed by the MTT assay, and nuclear morpholo

Natural Plant Products Mediated Prevention of Cancer Facilitated through Immune Suppression of Treg Cells.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death, and numerous methods have been tested and used to figure out an optimum way of treatment. Besides targeted therapy, immunotherapy has proven to be effective by controlling certain immune cells. Traditional cancer therapy is met with the consequences of adverse side effects that have been a major issue for treatment; hence, a leap towards naturally occurring immunomodulators was taken to develop safer methods of treatment. One of the major immune cells responsible for the growth of tumors is regulatory T cells (Tregs). To maintain immunological home

The Cluster Transfer Function of AtNEET Supports the Ferredoxin-Thioredoxin Network of Plant Cells.

NEET proteins are conserved 2Fe-2S proteins that regulate the levels of iron and reactive oxygen species in plant and mammalian cells. Previous studies of seedlings with constitutive expression of AtNEET, or its dominant-negative variant H89C (impaired in 2Fe-2S cluster transfer), revealed that disrupting AtNEET function causes oxidative stress, chloroplast iron overload, activation of iron-deficiency responses, and cell death. Because disrupting AtNEET function is deleterious to plants, we developed an inducible expression system to study AtNEET function in mature plants using a time-course p

Determination of Reactive Carbonyl Species, Which Mediate Reactive Oxygen Species Signals in Plant Cells.

Responses of plant cells to reactive oxygen species (ROS), e.g., reprogramming of defense genes or progression of cell death, should include the ROS signal transmission to target proteins, but the biochemistry of this process is largely unknown. Lipid peroxide-derived α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones (reactive carbonyl species; RCS), downstream products of ROS stimuli, are recently emerging endogenous agents that can mediate ROS signal to proteins via covalent modification. The involvement of RCS in certain ROS signaling in plants (oxidative injury of leaves and roots, ROS-induced program
