Changes in the hormonal balance and the contents of carbohydrates, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in overwintering organs of the biennial herb clary (Salvia sclarea L.) have been studied in relation to the adverse influence of environmental factors. Weather-related changes in tissue contents of cytokinins (CTK), abscisic acid (ABA), water-soluble sugars, and mineral nutrients elements have been detected in these organs. Each overwintering organ (rosette leaves, the basal part of the stem with axillary growth buds, and the storage portion of the root) is characterized by specific dynamics

Four new trace alkaloids with lycodine-related structures, Lycocasuarinines A-D (1-4), together with seven known analogues (5-11), were isolated from the chloroform extract of Lycopodiastrum casuarinoides. The structures and stereochemistry of 1-4 were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis (IR, UV, MS, NMR, HRESIMS and CD) and comparison with known ones. The acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrocholinesterase (BuChE) inhibitory activities of nine isolates were evaluated. Lycocasuarinine D (4) showed the most potent AChE inhibitory effect. In addition, a plausible biogenetic pathway of compound

Xanthium strumarium L., the main species of the genus Xanthium, is ubiquitously distributed. The aim of this study was to determine the cytotoxic effect of aerial organs of X strumarium, grown in Cuba, against cancer cell lines and the isolation of compounds potentially responsible for this activity. Initially, an ethanol partitioning procedure yielded the XSE extract that was subsequently fractionated with chloroform resulting in a XSCF fraction. Both, XSE and XSCF fractions exhibited cytotoxic effects on MDA MB-23 1, MCF7, A549 and CT26 cell lines by using the MTT assay. Above all, the XSCF

The leaves, stem bark, stem heart wood, root and tubers of Angiopteris evecta were successively extracted with petrol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol and methanol. All the fractions exhibited a wider spectrum of antibacterial activity. The dichloromethane and ethyl acetate fractions of the leaves and stem bark were particularly good and were the only fractions exhibiting antifungal activity. All fractions of the tuber with the exception of petrol, exhibited very good antibacterial activity.

The ethanol extract (EE) of the aerial parts of Solanum variabile Mart. (Solanaceae) was investigated for its ability to prevent ulceration of the gastric and duodenal mucosa at different doses. Its ability to heal chronic ulcer processes was also evaluated. When the HCl/ethanol solution was used to induce gastric ulcer, the EE produced a significant dose-dependent reduction of lesion formation of 51, 74 and 89%, at doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg, respectively. The 100 mg/kg dose had no significant activity. The EE also significantly reduced the gastric lesions induced by the combination of

Silicon is a non-essential element for plant growth. Nevertheless, it affects plant stress resistance and in some plants, such as grasses, it may substitute carbon (C) compounds in cell walls, thereby influencing C allocation patterns and biomass production. How variation in silicon supply over a narrow range affects nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) uptake by plants has also been investigated in some detail. However, little is known about effects on the stoichiometric relationships between C, N and P when silicon supply varies over a broader range. Here, we assessed the effect of silicon on abo

To evaluate plant response to Hg stress, glutathione, phytochelatins, and their Hg complexes were analyzed using HPLC with amperometric detection in samples of Asparagus acutifolius grown in the Almadén mining district (Ciudad Real, Spain), one of the most Hg-contaminated sites in the world. Soils of the Almadén mining district, and specifically from the Almadenejos zone, are highly contaminated, with some zones having values above 4,000 μg Hg g(-1) soil. Although soils have an extremely high concentration of mercury, generally less than 2% is available for plants, as is shown by various soil
